Ok how many push ups can you do from your toes!!!!!

I can do all of them in the gym style.I can do 50 without stopping but haven't tried to go past that.I love push ups-but love my wts to so I don't want to get to tired to complete a workout.

Let's see. First off, I am a huge STICKLER for form. I have seen many people's ideas of what a correct push up is and it usually includes a very limited range of motion - (ie, not going all the way down.) I remain unimpressed by huge numbers if it means you aren't "kissing the floor" on the low end!

At a 2-2 count I can do 25 on the toes - straight as a board and going all the way to the floor and back up. If I do them as fast as possible I can get close to 50 but again I have to be very cognizant of my form and range of motion. For me, doing them faster allows more room for error in my form but gets me a number I like! x( :+

When I'm working out regularly, I have no problem bench pressing and doing flyes, so I know my pecs aren't particularly weak. Yet, I can't do a single push-up. MAYBE 1 or 2 on my knees, but that's it. Obviously, there are other muscles being used aside from the pecs, or my form is bad. I figure if it's that difficult to get good form on an exercise, then it's not such a good exercise, and I leave it out.

None, zero, nada, 00000

Back when I w'd/o with a personal trainer I could do them in sets of 12, but that was a long time ago. I'm thinking I may need to hire another trainer.

I don't think it "proves' that poor technique is to blame. The push-up involves the whole body, especially the core, and the bench press isolaties the move to the upper body while the bench supports the rest of the body. If someone has a weak core, they won't be able to do push-ups, while they still could do bench presses. Strengthening the entire chain of muscles used in the push-up is necessary in order to be able to use correct technique. (So weakness in any area leads to poor technique.)

It's also difficult to transfer bench presses to push-ups because several parts of the body have to work in concert to do a p-u.

And, as you showed your client, it all starts with being able to do good planks.

I'm still working on my ROM, especially at the end of a set, but I will go only to as far as getting my arms to a 90-degree angle. Any deeper than that doesn't add appreciably to the work of the chest musle, but DOES put more stress on the shoulders, which are under pressure at a more risky angle.

That's one way of looking at it.
:)
Or, you could consider that it is so hard to do because it works so many muscles at once, and therefore is good for not only strengthening those muscles, but teaching them how to work together.

But it DOES help to THINK about what you're doing when you perform a bench press. A lot of what I teach is visualization, and learning to translate that to actually accomplishing a good push-up.

Besides, that, if it works it works, and that's what we're after.

Just Do It! :)

Well, I USED to be able to do about 12 or so. In December I fell of my motorcycle right on my shoulder! I have been afraid to do them ever since.
Last night I did MM and actually did two sets of "girlie" pushups and nothing hurt. So I was even proud of that!!
One step at a time!

LOL, I could make it to 20 the other day when I had my big yellow fleece on and I was in front of the 40 boot campers!! :p So I guess now I need to be going to at least 20... I generally do the first set on my toes and then drop down.

GS I've been doing the first 16, 8, and 2 on my toes. I was talking to another trainer the other day and he said the wider you have your legs the easier they are. So maybe I'll try that!!

I agree with Kathryn that it's a lot of core strength.

Keep on working at it!!!!

I can do 20 in a row...this happened only after I stopped telling myself I couldn't do them :)

Very good point, Candi! Quit telling yourself you can't do them, or you can only do so many! Set a goal number and go for it!
Just Do It! :)

2-3 is all I can do. I am so bad, I really don't try. I always skip that part of a workout. I don't even do them on my knees. I will have to stop that and do as many as I can.:(

As of this summer, I can do all the ones in GS Chest, but it took me years to be able to. I get so mad when there is something I can do, and I've been really working at push ups. I found that planks helped me out a lot, as have shoulder exercises.
