GOTTA LOVE THEM! Man! My lats are so sore today from yesterday's Back & Tri (disc 2). My assisted pull up bands arrived AFTER my workout, but for the workout I did revers pull ups (where I got myself up over the bar with a chair and S-L-O-W-L-Y lowered myself down). Then the bands arrived mid-afternoon and I just HAD to try them out. I did 2 sets....1 of pull ups 1 of chin ups! WOO HOO!

Lats are screamin' today!

Gayle,

Do tell...what are these bands of which you speak? And more importantly, from where will I be purchasing?

I am, in NO way, trying to enable anybody! LOL BUT....since you asked. I shopped around quite a few places and was able to buy my bands at www.jumpstretch.com, which was cheapest (that I found, at least). I bought the light band for $18.00 and the average band for $22.00. They're on sale right now and those are the sale prices, I believe. They each have a 1 year warranty on them. I used the Average Band yesterday, and considering I can't even BUDGE myself without a band, this one was perfect to get me started. I worked hard to get over the bar and the band gave me the perfect amount of 'help' to get the motion started. They have a stronger one, but I think that one would have done TOO much work for me (does that make sense?).

The only problem, though, is that the site is under construction so you have to call to place an order, and you can't even 'shop' online right now there. If you called them, they'll send you a paper catalog of sorts (it's not the glossy-type of catalog you get in the mail, rather a paper and more 'informal' one). I ended up calling and chatting with the guy, telling him my current (in)ability with pull ups and my goals and he headed me in the right direction. He was dead-on!

I know there are other places online to buy them also, and I'm sure somebody else will chime in with their preference, but I LIKED this guy and LIKED the way he took the time to personally help me with my needs. I get the impression they're a smaller company and just really enjoyed the feeling that they KNEW me. Does that make sense?

Ok.....so that does sound like a little enabling.

Gayle

p.s. shipping from Ohio to me in PA was only $4.65 and it came the next day.

Fitgirl....I actually HAD Woody Bands 2 years ago but got rid of them (SHAME on me, I know!). The ones I just bought are EXACTLY the same (but a bit cheaper).

I checked out your homemade bar and IT ROCKS!

Chin ups and Pull ups are some of the best body weighted exercises in existence.

I could not do them for YEARS and my DH kept telling me to work on my upper body strength and core. I was lifting, but not heavily or consistently enough.

When I upped the ante and really got into the heavy lifting, all of the sudden, I could do them....and I do, usually once or twice a week. LOVE it.

How many Gayle?????

2 sets of 12 each, but I BARELY squeezed my nose above on the last 3 or 4! :)

Why I like the bands (even though you didn't ask, lol)....it gives me the nudge SMOOTHLY to get started, instead of needing to jump off the chair or super-high step. And, the higher up I get, and closer to getting my chin over the bar, the less help the band gives me. Does that make sense?

Gayle

So Gayle (or anyone else), have you done assisted pull ups from P90X where you put your foot on a chair?

Wondering the difference between that and using the bands you mention?

I cannot do pull up/chin ups without assistance and the toe on the chair helped me loads when I was doing them.

Jacque-When I did P90X about 2 years ago, I actually TRIED using the back of the chair and also my high step on, like, 10 risers! LOL My problem is that I simply couldn't get myself STARTED on the motion. NEVER! Not without taking a little jump or push-off from the chair/step. Does that make sense? Dead weight! ;) I just couldn't budge myself even with my foot, and the other problem was that with the placement of my Power Tower in my basement, I couldn't get the chair is exactly the right position to not topple it over or to get just the right amount of 'help'.

The bands make all the difference for me. It's a smooth, flowing chin/pull up right from the very first pull all the way up and all the way down. Where as the chair or high step, or even the reverse pull ups, the motion was so UNsmooth. ;)

I hope I'm making sense. It's sort of difficult to explain.

Thanks for the explaination Gayle - I understand what you mean.

I think you helped me understand the way the bands work.

And to dss62467: I bought some bands that have an attachment that you just put over your door and the close. Essentially the bands are "attached" at the top of your door.

That worked well for me until I had enough strength to get started on a pull up !
