O/T Moms, is this a bad idea?

I'm doing Xmas shopping for my niece and nephew (6 and 8) and came across a fun product called Fun Slides Carpet Skates. Here's the description:

Like socks on a hardwood floor, FunSlides give you that same "fun-powered glide" on CARPET! These Carpet Skates have a friction resistant plastic base and foam foot grip with an adjustable hook and loop closure. Just strap them onto athletic shoes and you are ready to go!

Measures - 12" x 5" and can fit any size shoe, one size fits all.

I think these look great, but I don't have kids. I would ask my sis but she hates when people tell her what they are getting the kids for Xmas, she says that ruins her fun! So, moms, are these a bad idea? Too dangerous? Thanks!

Hi Sparrow

this is a tough call but with the young ages i wouldn't think they were good at this time. maybe when they are a little older. i have a 6 year but she is autistic so she is boucning off the walls for then most LOL. but from the kids i have bene around they might get a little too rowdy and get hurt. they do sound like fun though where did you find them?

Hi Sparrow ~

Like most "fun" toys, the Fun Slides Carpet Skates sound like they could provide a lot fun, physical activity provided there was supervision. Just thinking about children ages 6 & 8 sliding around every carpeted room in my house makes me cringe, (i.e., corners of end and coffee tables, fireplace hearth, etc!) And then there is the carpeted flight of 14 stairs AAAAAHHHHH!! My heart would be in my throat!

On the other hand, children find all sorts of creative ways to slip, slide and bounce around the house acquiring bumps, bruises and sometimes injuries that require a trip to the ER for a couple of sutures or casts!

Isn't it a wonder we survived our childhoods??!!

I think you should do what any loving aunt would do...get the Carpet Skates for your niece and nephew, give them a demonstration and let them at 'em!

From a kid perspective I think they sound fun, but possibly only temporarily. As a mom they would drive me nuts. I try to minimize the crazies in the house, but mainly because our home is small for all of us. If kids were racing around it would be a zoo. I would also say it depends on what they cost. If they are cheap than go for it, but if it is pricey I would think longer.

Just an idea, because this is what I got for my neices...think about an ice-cream maker. I know it is not the healthiest thing, especially here with this healthy crowd, but it is a blast. I got the electric one where you freeze the insert and just pour in your ingredients. You could actually make sorbets as a healthy option! But anyway, I added some flavorings and toppings in a basket to go along with it, and the night before Christmas I got all the perishable stuff for making it...the cream and bananas etc. I don't want to brag, but THEY LOVED IT! We made ice-cream for dessert and they love to go through the recipe book and pick out what to try next.

I will say it was a pricey kind of gift, but my sister and two sister in laws each have two girls. I did three sets like that, but it was for two kids each. Nothing like a family gift too! My sister even loved it;-)

I'm with Kim on this one. What else are aunts for?? :D

We always try and get our nephews and neice the most wonderful, loud, annoying, fun gifts. Bonus, my DH gets the enjoyment of seeing his sister's face when her daughter opens it!!

We've also gotten my BIL a boom box, etc. He's a drummer so what do you expect from his kids? They've got to keep up! ;)

I'm all for the Carpet Skates unless there are stairs. Stairs would really make me nervous. You know you'd try them on the stairs, and I'm sure they would, too!

ETA: YOU WIN THE PRIZE for earliest shopper I've met this year!! You win a bough of holly. Fa la la la la!!! :D

I'll second that!

Sparrow,

They do sound fun! Maybe I need to get a pair for myself so I can slide around the house and get my work done faster! :p Seriously, do you have a link for these? They do sound fun. Does your niece and nephew have an area minus coffee tables, etc (everything Kim mentioned)? We have a carpeted area in our basement that is empty, so I know my 7 & 6 year would have a blast. They worked on their rollerblading skills all summer. I can't imagine that it could be more dangerous than meeting the pavement? My kids wore shin and elbow guards and a helmet though.

Do they sell them on Amazon? I love reading the reviews from parents before I buy some toys. Maybe that would help.

WTG, on starting shopping already! I've purchased a few things here and there, but the serious shopping hasn't begun yet.

This may not help but...I "hate" that she does not want to know what her kids are getting! I always tell family to tell me what they are getting my kids (we usually have a list available so they know what the kids want) so I don't go and get them something that is a duplicate. Maybe you could make an exception in this case?

I agree! You should be able to discuss your gift ideas with the mom. After all, the gifts aren't for her, they are for the kids. I think they sound like a fun idea IF they have the kind of house, or area in the house where the kids could use them. I have a big family room in the basement where we have LOTS of kids stuff, so these would be great down there. I would not want them upstairs banging into my tables and other things that would either hurt them or the tables, or drive me nuts. So it really depends on a few things. But yeah, I would talk to the mom too.

I think they're a good idea - anything that encourages kids to be active is good. They can use them indoors in the winter, too. I think I'll look into them myself for grandkids!! Thanks for letting us know about them.
Just Do It! :)

I don't have an opinion about getting these for kids (beyond thinking that if there is a big, open carpeted area available (a basement familiy room?), then they sound fine. Otherwise, I'd be cautious about the 6 year old especially running into things).

On the other hand, they sound like a neat substitution for gliding discs for adults! Maybe even better than gliding discs, because the straps keep them on. I can see doing lunges and side squats and all sorts of other moves with them (can you say power scissors with a slide rather than a jump?).

Where did you find these?

RE: A link to Carpet Skates

Thanks, Debbie!
(Do you think the 'and up" would include a 48-year-old woman? LOL! I want the red ones!!)

RE: A link to Carpet Skates

RE: Hmmmm... SkateMax???

You guys are too funny! I found them at a great website called areyougame.com. It has tons of fun, educational and wacky games.

And, thanks for all the advice. I did mention them to my sis this morning and sent her the link. She laughed and said they were not necessary as the kids "are quite capable of ending up in the emergency room on their own." So, I guess that was a "please, no!" :D so I got them a game called "gooey louie" instead, where you have to pull fake boogers out of Louie's nose without popping his brains out of the top of his head. Hey, not everything can be educational :D

I love being an aunt!

thanks again, all!
