How often can I bathe my dog? We have a Shih-Poo that is mainly white and she gets dirty so quickly due to how low on the ground she is. Is once a week ok? Or is that too often? I only bathe my Lab once a month, if that. She is new territory for me, I've never had a small dog,and we've only had for about 3 weeks now.
Thanks for the help!

Hi Kathy,

I have an Eskimo that is white so I know how quickly they can get dirty. :) I wouldn't wash your dog every week, that might lead to skin irritations. There are these pads for wiping your dog off that works really well. I'm at work right now, but I will get the name for you when I get home; or maybe someone else out there uses them and knows what they are called. They work wonders! I use them to wash my dogs face (so I don't get water in his ears) and to just clean him off after he has walked through freshly cut grass and comes home with green feet. They are already moist and they are just like doggy washcloths. I buy mine at PetSmart.

Kathy,

You can bathe your dog once a week, as long as you use a mild shampoo. Consider a pet shampoo with oatmeal, so it is not as drying to the skin.

I often recommend some of my patients be bathed twice a week or every other day if they have skin problems, so I don't think once a week will be a problem. The key is the right type of shampoo!

I am no expert, but I don't like a doggy smelling dog so I bathe my dogs once a week. I use a gentle chammomile/aloe vera shampoo that I get from my vets to prevent skin irritations. That way, they are happy and so am I when I don't have to smell dogginess.

I rarely bathe my dogs, unless we have a conformation show. The key is the type of shampoo, making sure the shampoo is completely rinsed and using tepid (not hot) water.

I also have very short-haired dogs so they rarely get dirty.

For long-haired dogs I believe they have products you can use and brush into the coat to keep them clean.

Thank you for all your help! I think that I will feel better just taking her in for her grooming every 6 weeks and using the cloths. And if she gets really bad, then I will give her a full bath. It's mainly around her mouth and eye area that she gets really dirty.
Thanks again!
