Has anyone else caught the women's health series on NPR's "Talk of the Nation"? It's an ongoing series - running here (Pacific) on Tuesday's at 11 a.m. Last week was an overview of trends in medical research. Today's segment was on heart disease - the number 1 killer of women in the U.S.
I missed much of it today while cooling my heels in the vet's lobby, but what I heard was interesting. Both of the Dr. experts stressed the importance of exercise in fighting heart disease. They stated that it's critical to exercise even if one is overweight, even if the scale never moves! They did mean cardiovascular exercise that exercises the heart (my favorite muscle).
Most of us know that many doctors are reluctant to bring up weight issues with patients because they'll never see the patient again. These doctors stated that they find many overweight women will avoid routine medical care because they're unhappy with their bodies & are afraid of being criticized. So they don't even get basic cancer screenings, cholesterol, blood pressure checks, etc.
Interesting stuff but kind of depressing. Most of my friends are active & eat well, but then there are the yo-yo exercisers & dieters. And then there's the family health issues...
Catch this series on the radio if you can (audio transcripts are available).
