Now I'm dissapointed- update bf%

A few days ago I posted that according to my Fat Track Gold, I was 9.4% body fat. Well, after reading suggestions about how to take the measurements properly, I showed my husband how to take them and he took my bf%. Guess what? This time it came out 29.9% I'm about to crash that Fat Track Gold. x( I think I'm going to go by how I look and how my clothes fit, instead.

I think that is probably a good idea. It is hard to get an accurate reading and you have to do it the same everytime to get the most accurate fat loss %. I personally don't want to know my %. I have had three kids and I have earned every dimple I have! :p

Don't trash it just yet!

They are a GREAT tool if you are looking to lower your body fat!!! Don't take the # for the truth as we all know it's not exactly right BUT if you want to lose some body fat it can certainly tell you if you are headed in the right direction! That's what I use my Omron for and let me tell you...It's an AESOME motivational tool! I use it once per week, first thing in the morning, after pee and before I drink anything. :)

well, healthy body fat % for active women is 18-24% so don't worry too much if you're not 9.4%... that's really unhealthy.

Mariela,
The calipers are a really hard to master, even trainers don't use them correctly and anything can throw the numbers off - bloat for instance. I'd really recommend using a tape measure, they're cheap and pretty much fool proof. Don't be discouraged!

My Tanita Body Fat Scale measures me at about 10% more than my calipers. But, you know what? When I bend down and touch my toes when the scale is reading my body fat, it goes down about 10%. Too funny! I did that by accident once, when I wasn't wearing my glasses and couldn't read the scale. So I bent over to see and it was 10% less.

Whatever! Just go by how your clothes fit and how solid you feel.

Whoa, that's quite a difference!

If I ever get my body fat measured, I'll be sure to have YOU do it, and not your husband, LOL!

I think that people sometimes get too caught up in numbers: how much one weighs, one's body fat %, what size clothes one wears, how old one is. I think going by how you look and how your clothes fit and how you feel is a much healthier way to go in many cases.

Thank you everyone.

I'm NOT dissapointed for not being 9%. I am NOT dissapointed about the 29.9% either. I NEVER said I wanted to be as such low levels.
I am dissapointed for the erratic results and the fact that I can't even use it to measure my progress because every reading is too different from the others.

>What is everyone using to measure BF%.?

I use the Omron body fat analyzer. It's won't give you an accurate body fat percentage but it's accurate enough to use to track losses/gains in body fat which is what I use it for.

Mariela-

I understand your frustration! I have a Tanita scale and I've found the most consistent results by always weighing myself at the same time of day and trying to have the same hydration at that time. I measure myself in the morning right after I get up and after I've gone to the bathroom. It usually doesn't fluctuate more than 2%.

I think calipers are the hardest, but if you do it right, it's pretty accurate, from what I've read. You are the living example to show what happens if your form is off! Good luck- there is a ton of info about it on the web. I have the AccuMeasure calipers, too. The % my scale gives is really different from the caliper measurement, so stick with one method consistently and I think you'll be okay.

Good luck!
