Normal heart rate?

My DH is an avid bike rider, and, despite being overweight, usually has a resting heart rate of about 60-65. By "resting" he just means sitting at his desk. Suddenly, now his sitting heart rate is between 99-105! He feels fine, has no shortness of breath, and can still go long distances on his bike. We're calling the doctor today, but has anyone else heard about this happening? We tried 2 different heart rate monitors to make sure it wasn't something wrong with the HRM. I'm a little nervous.

Does his heart race then slow down?
My mother had a condition called atrial fibrillation. Her heart would race while she was in a resting state. I would eventually slow down.
It was not life threating but she had to take blood thinners to prevent blood clots.

I wanted to add... please keep up posted on what the doctor says.

Nancy, please let us know how DH (or DT :D) is doing. Has he been riding a lot in the heat? Maybe it's some sort of heat stress. I sure hope he's okay.

Thanks folks. I got him an appointment with a cardiologist for Monday.

I spoke with one of my clients who is a doc, and he said it could be atrial fibrillation. I read about AF on the internet, and it showed it to DH and he said "that's it". He seems to have the symptoms. But we'll see what the cardiologist says. I'm glad to have a sense of what it might be and it helps somewhat to know that it's common and not directly life-threatening.

Yesterday he wore his HRM the whole day and his heart rate stayed in the 60s whenever he was sitting, so if it's AF, it's only occasional.

Sending out good heart vibes for DT. Let us know how he is doing!!

Thanks Cathy and Catherine. I will surely let you know how things go. He's feeling fine and doing a 50-mile bike ride tomorrow. :)

Hi Nancy..my DH has has AF issues too, but his HR goes much higher than your DH's. My DH does not get much exercise at all and I think if he did, he could strengthen his heart a bit and that might help as right now he takes meds for it. Kudos to your DH getting in a 50 mile bike ride tomorrow!!

I have Mitral Valve Prolapse that was discovered in my early 30's when having my 3rd child. Dad had some heart "issues" also.

I get AF here and there but have had the gammut of tests run (since I also get horrible chest pains - thinking I'm having a heart attack) and have gone to the emergency room a few times. After having the holter monitor for the 24 hour stints, treadmill tests and also ultrasounds, there isn't anything that is causing me to take meds or worry the cardiologist - just a fact of life I live with like a bad back.

Knowing what triggers it all for me is the most important - stress is a big one in addition to too many OTC allergy meds when the pollen count is high. I get migraine like symptoms if my allergies get bad so I just have to decide which I want, AF or a bad headache !

All in all, if he feels well that is a good sign.

Crossing fingers all is OK. Will be watching for the results . . .
