Non-dairy breakfast ideas

I have some stomach issues and am trying to figure out what is causing them. I am scheduled for a doctor's app. soon, but want to eliminate some of the things that could be causing the prob. before I go.

I am eliminating dairy from my diet and need some good breakfast options. I typically have a protein shake w/yogurt, so now that's out. Today I had whole wheat bread and some peanut butter. I don't want to eat too many grains though. I need a good combination of fats, grains, and protein. My body notices when it doesn't get that!

Lunch and dinner are better bec. I can eat lots of salads, veggies, and get protein from turkey or chicken. Breakfast is a prob. though. Don't want a high fat, all grains breakfast. Since I have stomach prob. I don't want to add beans (beans and meat sound gross for breakfast anyway!)

I've never tried soy milk but have read on this board that it causes some stomach issues. Don't need more of that.

Any ideas, wise and smart board members?

Thanks in advance.

I always just use Lactaid milk because I sometimes have stomach problems with milk. You might also want to try the big breakfast cookie recipe that was on the boards. Just do a search for it. I have been having those for the past 2 weeks and I love them. Very filling and you can add protein powder to it (I add flavorless powder) and some almonds for fat.

Not really wise, but I have dairy issues and switching to soy milk solved them. Now it's soy milk in cooking my oatmeal, soy yogurt, etc. I have read recently there are new issues with soy, but it doesn't seem anything life altering to me and no long-tried-and-true studies at this point, so I'm sticking with my soy.

Good luck finding what works for you.:)

Edits, oh yes, the big breakfast cookie.:9

You can still do a protein shake, just using different ingredients. Soy yogurt instead of dairy yogurt (or even no yogurt), a pea/rice or hemp based protein powder, etc. (I found that pea/rice protein is more easily digested for me than soy).

How about some oatmeal with flax meal, maple syrup (or other sweetener). If you want to avoid all 'milks', you could add some apple juice as a liquid (and omit other sweeteners, because this would add sweetness as well.

A muesli type cereal (raw rolled oats, dried fruit, nuts) is another option. To bypass any 'milks,'you could add some applesauce perhaps.

Warning about the big breakfast cookie - it has quite a bit of powdered milk in it.

Eggs...you can fry them. You can scramble them. You can poach them. You can hard boil them.

Oatmeal with soymilk.

Oops! Shannon is right.

Didn't think about that! It doesn't seem to upset my stomach like real milk does though. Or maybe milk doesn't even upset my stomach any more, I have just been drinking Lactaid for years!

And don't feel limited to typical "breakfast" foods, after all, in Japan, they often have miso soup in the morning.

Whatever you like to eat for lunch or dinner or snacks can be eaten at breakfast (how about a big bowl of chili!).

Chili for breakfast?! I really would have some stomach issues if I ate chili right now. For some reason my body isn't liking something I am eating. Not sure what it is, so I'm attempting to eliminate some possibilities.

I am cutting out all milk, cheese, eggs, and yogurt for now. I didn't realize how freaking hard that would be! It sure is forcing me to eat my veggies though. Guess that's a good thing. I eat a salad at least once a day (usually lunch) and try to force myself to eat a veggie for dinner. Gets boring though. Now no dairy! Bummer.

I will certainly try the recommendations. I am skeptical of trying soy milk only bec. I read an old thread on here where several people mentioned having some issues with it. I don't want to add something new into the mix. Sticking to the basics for now until I (and the doctor) figure out what is causing my stomach problems.

Thanks again for all the tips. I've been so impressed with the quality of information (and people) on this board.

Just wanted to tell you that I am not a big fan of soy milk so I tried almond milk and I love it. You might try that and see if you can substitue it for milk. It has a sweet taste and about the same calories as soy milk. I don't think it has as much protein though. Darn.

As someone who has had to also restrict things my body is sensitive to I have some of the already suggestions look great.

For me, I use Rice Milk, I couldn't find a Almond milk without any added sugar. I make smoothies with hemp milk (hemp seeds blended with water), hemp powder, frozen banana and blueberries.

I also make either brown rice or quinoa or steel cut oats with rice milk and add brown rice protein powder, flax seeds, nuts, raisins, etc...

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Take care,
Sham
