non-Cathe workout recommendations

I love Cathe but there are days I want something different. However, I don't trust any of the workout reviews. I have bought some workouts that are really pretty bad and some that I can't believe anybody would recommend (the Brazilian dance workout comes to mind.... I think there is a total of 10 minutes actual dancing; not enough to break a sweat). I figured the Cathe crowd would be the best place to ask since you guys know what good workouts are all about. I mean there is advanced and then there is Cathe (Imax 3 ... now THAT is a workout). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I don't care what kind of workout either: weights; cardio; circuit; step; kickbox .... anything. Thanks.

I like Gin Miller- Intense Moves is one of my favorite interval/step workouts. Other than that all the rest I have are just for variety - still not able to match Cathes personality and/or intensity and/or quality.

Hi there,

The P90X set is advanced and has a variety of workouts that are different from Cathe's. If you do a forum search here for P90X, you'll find a plethora threads on it. VF (videofitness.com) also has some reviews on it as well.

Also, if you think you might want to workout without a DVD, check out CrossFit, www.crossfit.com. It's challenging and different.

Thanks guys. I love Gins' Intense Moves but haven't seen anything else at that level from her. I have been reading up on the P90X ... I just really don't want the diet, etc. I just hate to get the entire set and then discover I don't like it. I have not heard of crossfit though. I am off to check out the site. Thanks again.

Yes, P90X is good, so is Amy Bento, so is Kimberly Spreen.

I've been thinking about trying Tracey Staehl--I have her core conditioning DVD & really like it--but complex choreography that's not Cathe kind of scares me. :p

I second Amy Bento (any and all of her workouts especially the Extreme series or the upcoming series) and Absolute Kickboxing by Kimberly Spreen. The newest CIA's are really fun and good especially All Body Attack and All out Infused step. I like Tracey Staehle's Core Strength & Conditioning and High Intensity Step Mix. Her newest look good but I haven't preordered b/c I haven't found a consistent delivery yet but you may want to seriously consider her newest offerings. For functional fitness that is kind of sneaky as in you will have a learning curve and you won't feel like you do when you do a Cathe but afterwards you will know that you not only worked your muscles in a unique way but that you actually worked some muscle groups you didn't know you have try the TLT's by Tracie Long. I like Kelly Coffey-Meyer's Stepboxing (it is fast and fun). Barry's Boot Camp is a set on sale for $20 on the www.hsn.com. It is tough....5 DVD's beginning with endurance weight work and ending with 20 min. of super tough non-treadmill cardio or you can do the treadmill cardio. I do not have P90X but my hubby will probably purchase it soon and I plan on getting his newest workouts that should be available around December, I think. If you have a bosu I love a CIA workout called Double Cardio. You get two workouts on one DVD...an interval step/weight workout (awesome) and a bosu cardio workout (awesome). I like Jari Love's Slim and Lean, Get Ripped to the Core, and Get Ripped 1000. Branching out is total fun! I hope you find some other workouts/instructors that you enjoy!

I like Amy Bento, Tracey Staehle, and Kimberly Spreen. I think those are pretty much all I've kept besides my large Cathe collection. Almost everything else I've sold off. I also have Tracy Effinger's Squeeze, which I think a lot of Cathe-ites have. It's low weight and not at all like Cathe, but very effective for the most part. I've found it coming in handy right now when I have an ankle injury and don't want to do weighted lower body workouts.

I second the recommendation of Jari Love's workouts. They are not as intense as Cathe, but nice for a change of pace. I really like Ripped 1000, but I do all of them (Get Ripped, Slim and Lean, Ripped to the Core) and always find them enjoyable. I like Jari's style and manner.

Gotta give some love to Leslie Sansone and her walking tapes. She seems to have upped the intensity, without going too far. I do her walking tapes on non-Cathe days and it's a great formula for me.

I really like:
Kimberly Spreen's Kick Box Boot Camp.
You need a weighted bar.
Keli Roberts: Step it strong.
Gin Miller's Intense Moves is a good one.
Gin has others which are good:
Extreme Step
Simply Interval
The Power workout
Simply Circuit.
I think that Cathe is the best.
and Gin Miller really is a great instructor.
I haven't done my P90X yet.

I use Christi Taylor a lot-- she's not as intense as Cathe, but you still get a great workout. And, the music she uses is fantastic.

:)

I second the recommendations for Tracey Staehle www.fitbytracey.com Her videos are great; she is very enthusiastic and delivers a high intensity sweaty workout. I have High Intensity Step and Step SweatFest. As with any new workout, there is a learning curve. But, just as Cathe says...it is fun once you make the effort to learn it! ;) And I believe that is what keeps us challenged and coming back for more. I pre-ordered her newest set and believe it will be awesome as well! :7

Thanks alot. I will definately check out your recommendations. Several for Amy Bento and Tracey Staehle (whom I had never heard of before). I am still on the fence about P90X....I think I would rather get Cathe's Hardcore series, and budgetary constraints do not allow for the purchase of both!x( I love Gin Miller but except for Intense Moves I find I do her workouts less and less. I also have Jari Love and I enjoy those too (is it me but does she look uncomfortable doing the cardio in Ripped 1000 and isnt the new woman the grandmother from the old Bowflex commercials???). I appreciate all the input; thanks again.

Sorry for the late reply, but I just had to shoutout for Seasun Zieger, who has three advanced step workouts, and 1 Bosu workout. I have her 3 step videos which are great if you like advanced chereography with a great workout. Other advanced videos break down too much, but not Seasun. I think she has a great teaching style. And after doing her workouts a few times, I realized the intensity is also great! Comparable to an all-step workout from cathe! If you like advanced step at all, try Seasun.
