Nitro-Tech/Meso-Tech bars/shakes

Everyone,

Yesterday I went to GNC to pick up some of these high-protein/low-carb bars and shakes by Nitro-Tech and Meso-Tech, and, to my surprise, the price was through the roof. 12 bars for $32 and 4 shakes for $12. I could not believe it. I looked around for substitutes, but didn't see anything too impressive and then got overwhelmed with the huge selection. I have never bought these bars/shakes before, but is this pricing normal from those who have?

If these things are a big rip off, are there any out there that are more reasonable and as nutritious?

Thanks.
Linda

The first thing you need to do is stay away from GNC! They are the devil. Everything is marked up. Secondly you need to taste a bar before you buy a bunch of them. Most are truly awful. Try Wal-Mart and the Vitamin Shoppe. Then if you like them you can buy them in bulk off the internet. Same for the shakes, yuck. I like balance bars but those are not low carbs. EAS makes a low carb Advantage bar thats not too expensive. You can get them at Wal-Mart.

I was also looking into the Meso-Tech bars. Vitamin Shoppe has them for $21 - box of 12. I haven't tried one yet, but read so many articles and advertisements about how good they are. Were you able to find a good protein bar that you like which are low in carbs? I'm interested to know.
Thanks.
Erin

If you have a Vitamin World in your area try the Protoplex Bars. I like those - sorry I don't remember which flavor it is, haven't bought any in a while but I'll be going this weekend. But I do know that it was NOT one that had chocolate as part of the flavor. I will have bars with a light chocolate coating but nothing that's chocolate all the way through! Yuk!

Ditto on the EAS AdvantEdge bars at Wal-Mart - reasonable priced and you can get single bars. I love the EAS AdvantEdge shakes, strawberry, those are really good!

GNC is very pricey, I stay out of there but every once in a while I'll stop by when they have the 2 for 1 specials or big discount on the purchase of two of the same items. Usually these are vitamins and supplements/amino acids and such. Once again I'm getting L-glutamine or L-carnitine, flaxseeds or something along those lines.

For catalog ordering I think Nutrition Express has fairly decent pricing.

Good liuck on your search!

I buy Cliff bars from Target and this is because most bars at GNC are overpriced, chalky tasting, and I get tired of the way I'm treated when I walk into that store. I used to eat Balance Bars until I read the label. One of the top 5 ingredients is sugar. Cliff bars are sweetened with cane juice. This doesn't trigger my binges like sugar does. Plus, they seem more natural, like fruit and nuts squished together, not chalk and weird chemically engineered chocolate like some protein bars offer. I also only try to eat protein bars when I will not have refrigerator access. During the week my snacks are composed of tuna, fruit, cottage cheese, p.b. and celery, things that are natural. But maybe you need to eat on the go. I did buy a box of Myoplex Lite bars (toffee crunch) from GNC during gold card week. They ended up being under a dollar per bar, but I was so sick of them by the time the box was done, I never bought them again. Sorry this was so long! Sheesh!

Hi Linda,
GNC prices are way above anyone elses. I puchase the MET RX Vanilla Butter Creme protein powder from Trader Joes @ $23.00 and the same container is sold at GNC for $36.00. If you have a Trader Joes in your area you may want to check them out.
