night time snack

Cathlete
so, for those of you who allow yourself a night time snack before bed, what do you have? i've been doing airpopped popcorn but i'm getting board with that. Prior to that i did fat free cottage cheese with peanut butter or fat free greek yogurt and peanut butter or a protein shake. None of which do it for me anymore. I like to allow myself 200cals for after dinner each day. Any suggestions?

I have a sweet tooth and like to microwave an apple with some truvia, cinnamon and a teensy bit a butter. Tastes so very yummy and fall like.

When you said you have greek yogurt and peanut butter, do you mix those together? I've never thought about that, but now i'm curious..being the peanut butter freak that i am. :)

Lately, I've been making a 'eggnoggy' type smoothie: bananas, nutmilk and water, a bit of yacon syrup, with a shake of pumpkin pie seasoning.

This sounds awesome! But what is yacon syrup? I'm really hoping that wasn't supposed to be bacon syrup?

A small bowl of Kashi Cinnamon Harvest with some skim milk is my favorite! The milk helps me feel full and I love all things Kashi!!!

i'm a PB freak too:) I have to have at least 2Tbsp a day. As far as the greek yogurt and PB, yes i mix it together. I add in 1 packet of stevia and 1 Tbsp of smuckers natural honey peanut butter. Its good but i'm ready to mix it up a bit.

Yacon (nope, not bacon! You think *I* would have anything to do with bacon, syrup or otherwise? Where have you been, girl? LOL!;)) is a sweetener made from a root that grows in the Andes. It is full of prebiotics (the good stuff that our good gut bacteria thrive on) and tastes a bit like molasses. Pricey, but a little goes a long way, IMO, and I see it somewhat as a nutritional supplement as well as a sweetener.

Here's more info: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-yacon-syrup.htm (just a random site that had the info, not one I've purchased any from).

I've been drinking 'steamers' with a little sugar free flavoring in them. I use 1% milk, about 6 - 8 ounces, and a shot of sugar free flavoring - peppermint, vanilla, gingerbread, or hazelnut. Plus the warm milk makes me sleepy:p
Since buying an espresso machine for home, I've become addicted to lattes. But steamers are quickly becoming my favorite hot beverage!!

I remember reading not too long ago that the quality of your sleep is better if you stick to carbs before bedtime rather than protein, and I've found this to be true. So now I try to eat my yogurt earlier in the day or evening, and save the popcorn or soy chips for right before bedtime.

I like dried cranberries and turkish apricots. I usually have three or four apricots with a tablesppon or two of cranberries. yum!!!

Good point.
Carbohydrate consumption is related to seratonin release, which is calming. Also, foods with calcium and/or magnesium in are good.

i've noticed this too which is why i've been doing the popcorn. thanks for all the suggestions ladies. some of your ideas sound super yummy.

Two small figs (chopped up) and 10 almonds.

I like the nut/dried fruit combination, too.
Usually a quarter to half ounce of walnuts or almonds and a small handful of raisins or dried cranberries or 2 prunes or a couple of pieces of candied ginger.
With a cup of tea.
For me, it's more of a dessert shortly after dinner rather than right before bed.

Lots of times my evening snacks are dependent upon my calorie intake and macros for the day. I track all of that so I will usually check my #'s and choose my snack accordingly. It ranges from a mini bag of light popcorn to fruit, cottage cheese, a skinny cow or ww ice cream bar, a bowl of cereal and the list goes on....:)

You all are making me hungry!!!!!!!!!!! I try not to eat after 7pm.:( Dang, it's 7:54pm... My after dinner snack is almonds, or fruit, or a simple glass of 1% milk.

Usually one of the following: (a) salad (b) steamed veggies with salsa/tomatoes (c) hanna/japanese sweet potato (I much prefer to the orange flesh types) & veggies with salsa (d) crisped lavash with zucchini slices/onions
