New With A Question

I am just baffled! I am 52, going through menopause, and I have gained an easy 20 lbs. in 1 year. I've tried Atkins, (too restrictive), I've tried Ww, I can never stick to it. I used to go to the gym religiously and workout with a PT. Now,I have no energy at all. I've tried jogging(which I liked) but developed plantar faciitis. My Dr. says no impact activity for 3 months. Is there anybody my age who was able to get it together and overcome the weight gain? I have never had a problem with gaining weight until I heard about the 5-6 meals a day. I started at 130 when I quit smoking 6 years ago, I am now 170. I was able to look proportioned due to weight training but all of a sudden, I've just blimped up. I do not take any hormones or any other medication. Can someone offer suggestions?

Mary Ann,

I would highly encourage you to begin reading all you can about menopause (I would actually say devour it if you can). I know it's not a quick fix but that's what I'd recommend. I'm just at the beginning of premenopause (and I'm quite young) and all of the reading that I've been doing has helped tremendously.

Two books, although I've not read the second...."What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" by Dr. Lee &"The Sexy Years" by Suzanne Somers (sp). I plan to get Somers book because it has some information about bioidentical hormones in it (I think Lee's book does too...at least his website does).

I'm just checking in to say I know there are other women on this forum who have had similar experiences, and hopefully they will see your post and respond. I'm always interested in reading about these issues as my 48th birthday is on Wednesday and I should be entering pre-menopause any day now. In fact, my doc just had me take another FSH test last week and I should be getting the results today or tomorrow....

Mary Ann,

I'll share my weight gain experience with you. Since starting peri-menopause about 7 years ago (I was 42), I have gained scale weight of about 7-8 lbs. When the weight came on, it came on what seemed like overnight. It was flab and it was starting to pad my back and my upper arms (YUK). I'd always had a weight problem but with healthy eating and 4-5 days of cardio, I was able to keep pretty trim.

I started all kinds of diets, Adkins, Medifast, Weight Watchers, etc. and I could lose a couple of lbs, but it came right back. This was a new situation for me because I had lost 40-50 lbs in high school that I was able to keep under control for about 25 years.

I cannot say that I have lost the weight, but I have turned most of it into lean muscle by weight training and clean eating as much as possible. By clean eating I mean at least 80-90 grams of protein per day, complex carbs (plenty of fruits and vegetables) and by eating from 5-6 small meals per day. I drink at least 6, 8 ounce glasses of water a day. I know I should be drinking more but with the onset of peri-menopause, it's hard to hold the water like I used to be able to.
Oh, yes, and I stay away from sugar as much as possible. That doesn't mean I don't slip from time to time, but sugar is definitely a TREAT these days, not part of my daily diet.

The South Beach Diet worked wonders for me over the holidays. I started in October and lost 6 lbs and kept it off four about three months. Then I fell off the wagon eating bad carbs and gained it back, but I did not gain it back overnight which was nice. I go through phases and will probably hop on the South Beach Diet again before too long to lose some weight before we go on vacation.

I am 49 years old, 5 ft tall, 123 lbs. Because of the weight work, I wear a size 4 or 6 pants. This is the same size I wore when I was 115-117 lbs a few years ago. So, I am okay with it for the most part.
Life is short, I don't want to drive myself too crazy over the scale.

So, in a nutshell, what worked for me is eating lean protein, complex carbs, drinking my water, get at least 8 hours sleep, weight train upper and lower body and cardo. I am an hourglass or pear so I weight train my upper body heavy weights and lower body medium weights. As far as no impact, I believe there are people on this forum who are doing low impact kickboxing for cardio. As far as your foot problems, people on this site are saying orthotics is the answer.

I will add that I am taking hormones due to severe symptoms from almost zero estrogen. I am on a low dose birth control pill, Mircette.

I see it's been recommended you read about peri-menopause. That is invaluable advice. I read everything I could get my hands on. Be sure to pay particular attention to information that is not biased. I liked, "The Power of Peri-Menopause" by Stephanie DeGraff-Bender. That has been my peri-menopause bible. Also, accepting that your body will not be the same as it was when you were younger. In order to stay in shape you will have to commit to a lifestyle change in your eating habits and the way you exercise. There's no getting around it.

I see you have stopped smoking. Huge congratulations. I know with a Dad that died from Emphysema a couple of months ago that controlling an addiction such as smoking is quite an accomplishment. Looks like you're ready for another challenge by seeking out advice and knowledge of other's experiences with menopause weight gain. That's a great place to start and I wish you much luck.

Hi Mary Ann,
I think we could be twins! I am 51, peri-menopausal and having the same issues as you - including plantar fasciitis. For the peri-menopause my MD has me taking Activella (bioidentical hormones). I read alot before which helped me be informed prior to seeing my MD but much of what I read seemed contradictory and confused me more (and I have a medical background - coding). Prior to this I could lose weight by watching what I ate even without exercise and now I feel somewhat lost on what will work but still trying. One thing - when they discovered I was peri-menopausal they also found out I was hypothyroid. From what I've read this is very common. They finally have my thyroid hormones balanced so I can't use that excuse. I have about the same amount of weight to lose as you and much of it has settled in my ab area - the buddha belly look! For my PF my MD ordered therapy and orthotics. I just got them today and my foot is feeling great. I know many ins plans won't cover them though. I rec'd a catalog that has lots of stuff for PF sufferers - they have a website too www.FootSmart.com if you want to check out what they have. They even have a kit to make impressions for custom inserts for $99 which may be an option if your insurance won't pay. Many fellow sufferers have mentioned Birkenstocks and I plan to get a pair of sandals for walking around the house and outside when it gets warm enough (I'm in Wisconsin). As far as an exercise regimen while recovering - you might try alternating strength training with pilates or yoga. Others suggested kickboxing which would be great if you can stand it. Look at this as a time to concentrate on strength training or other things that you can do rather than dwelling on no cardio. My phy therapist said Step is the worst and not to try that until I can walk the same amount of time as the class/tape would be without the pain returning and then start step with less time and work my way up.
I joined WW and have lost a couple pounds but it has been a struggle. I think my problem is that I need to increase my exercise and do it consistently. I switched jobs and am trying to get into morning workouts. It shouldn't be that hard but have very dry eyes (another joy of peri-menopause) and haven't been sleeping well. My tear ducts are getting plugged this week so hopefully after that me and my new orthotics will be up bright and early working out with Cathe! Have they checked your thyroid? I don't know that I have been much help other than letting you know that you are not alone in this struggle. Keep trying and hopefully you will find what works for your body at this point in your life. Good luck.

You're right! We have so much in common, it's unreal.I never had my thyroid checked. Did you get medication for that? I don't want to start taking all kinds of medicine. I am going to try the Dr. Phil plan. It has real food and I don't think I would be hungry. As for exercise, My butt is heading to the gym as soon as my son leaves for school. (I have a 12 year old) I use to go to the gym all the time but I got lazy. Today is a new beginning. I don't have any of the Cathe tapes yet. I never heard of them till yesterday. I have a gazillion Firm Tapes. I hope you keep in touch, I'd like to see how you are progressing.

Mary Anne- your thyroid is probably checked in your annual check-ups. It's part of the blood work. But you should ask your doc to make sure. Taking meds for sluggish thyroid is NOT an option. If you have it, you take the pills.

A large percentage of the female population have the sluggish thyroid problem. It's kind of like older men and prostate problems. I think I read once that it might all be caused by some bomb testing that was done by the government in the sixties. In any event, it's here to stay, and it must be dealt with. Mild cases have no real symptoms. The symptoms in more severe cases are extreme fatigue, feeling cold a lot, heavy periods, hair loss and weight gain. I had no symptoms at all when my doctor detected it, and have been on synthroid ever since. It is VERY easy to control! So DO check with your doc to make sure you have been tested. :)

P.S. I got my FSH test results and I'm still not there yet. When did pre-m begin for you ladies? As I mentioned, I'll be 48 tomorrow.

I had a physical in Dec. I had not had a period for a year so my doctor said I am through the transition part. I'm real lucky though. I have no hot flashes or anything like that. Maybe I'm just getting lazy. Maybe that's why I gained all the weight. It's all in my stomach area. I went to the gym this morning. I did weights and cardio. I do great with the weights, but cardio is something to be desired. I lasted a whole 16 mins.:7

Thanks so much for all that information. I will be 49 in May, and every once in a while I miss my period (this has been going on all my life). I have no hot flashes, but from time to time I have problems sleeping. I do not know if the not sleeping is coming from perimenopause or stress. But I am going to take your advice (print it out) and see how it goes. Something to add to your advice, ask your mother when she went thru menopause, and that can give you an idea, when you will go thru it.

Hi Mary Ann,
Checking thyroid hormone at your physical isn't automatic - often depends on type of ins and MD practice preferences. Mine wouldn't even check mine the first time I asked because she didn't think I really had symptoms suggestive of a hypothyroid disorder even with a strong family history (both of my sisters). Symptoms can be rather vague and things that can be attributed to many things - fatigue, etc. Finally convinced her to test it a few months later and she was surprised that I was. The treatment is thyroid hormones that they need to gradually increase. It is only one tiny pill so not bad and worth it not to have the incredible fatigue. I agree that you should check and see if they checked this when you had your physical. If not, see if they can test you just for your own peace of mind. It is a simple blood test.

Were you just diagnosed with plantar fasciitis? I was trying to run too and was doing KBing barefoot so not sure which caused it but at least it is only one foot. Did some cardio this morning for the first time in a while and so far ok! I forgot to mention another thing the PT at the sports clinic recommended that may be helpful. It is called a Strassburg Sock and you wear this at night to keep your foot flexed. Similar to what a night splint would do but without the bulk. He said they have had good luck with using these. It has been about 3 weeks and it does seem to be helping me. You can order it through the web site I mentioned earlier.

I am relatively new to Cathe too - my first DVD was the one with Power Hour. I love that workout. Since then I have gotten more but haven't used too many yet.

How is the Phil diet plan? I am doing the WW but not fanatic about writing things down and counting points. Just trying to make good food choices and watch portion size - and concentrating on getting enough calcium. Joined more so I would need to be accountable to that weekly weigh in and the group meetings. Would love to hear more about Phil's plan and how it's going for you. Take care.

I am going through my first year of menopause right now. I opted not to take any hormones-- I did have some minor hot flashes and sleeplessness. But, no big deal. But... what I do not like is my big tummy -- which used to be so flat!!! One of the many books I read on this subject -- the author referred to this as "menopot". The tummy is part of the menopause thing. YUK!!

I will keep on trying to lose this tummy thru Cathe's great workouts and I've just gotten back into the gym for 3 - 5 days a week. i sort of try to do the South Beach diet. I am cutting back on my carbs - especially the white breads and pastas -- seeems very helpful.

I am so thankful that Menopause has been pretty smooth so far. I hope it remains like this... other than the 'menopot'!!!

Linda
