Cathlete
Hi all....
I have been a dedicated Cathe fan since March 2002, and on this forum as well.....seem to be more of a lurking one...but do post on occassion....Cathe helped me lose the the last 25 pounds i gained with my first daughter who was born on April 23rd 2001.....
and I just found out yesturday that I am expecting again, and due in March 2004. I am excited except for the fact that I am suffering from extreme sickness already...I was sick with extreme nausea my entire last pregnancy...all day everyday...and it has started again....i found french fries to be my best friend during my 1st pregnancy.....probably contribted to my 65 lbs weight gain...and I do not want to repeat that again.....anybody have some good suggestions to combat nausea....here are a few that i found found helpful
1. ginger ale
2. Mentos (mint candies)
3.Diclectin ( perscription )
4. Eating crackers 10 minutes before getting out of bed

Seems wierd to be writing in this board....but i guess i will be here for another 34 weeks...lol
Hope you are all enjoying pregnancy.....and not all like me...(puke...puke)
Take care
Jenn ( Toronto, Ontario)

Hello Jenn, I am new to this board as well. I have two boys, Ryan is 2 years 9 months, and Ethan is 7 months. I just thought I would come on to see if there was any information on how to get rid of this flabby belly that unfortunately has stuck with me. I just thought I would let you know what worked for me with the nausea. It is really strange, but my doctor suggested it, and I would have tried anything that might not make me throw up. Cheetos. They were the first thing I ate that I actually kept down. Not the healthiest of items, but my doctor said it was ok until I felt better. She also said some women felt better drinking lemonade-but it didn't work for me. Congrats, and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi,
Congrats and welcome! I gained 65 lbs with EACH of my 3 kids. This time I'm not gonna do that again!!! I'm 17 weeks now with number 4 and have gained 2 lbs so far so I'm on a much better track this time!

What helped me with morning sickness with my first 3 was oranges and carbs- but the carbs made me gain weight. this time, the only thing that helped with morning sickness was finally getting to 13 weeks, nothing seemed to help and I could not keep anything down. But at least you know there is an end in sight. I say just experiment and see what helps. Hope you feel beter soon.

Marci

Thanks for your suggestions .....I hope the nausea goes away after 1 st trimester this time......I will give oranges a try....Carbs are my biggest problem too...I crave carbs to soak up the acid feeling i my stomache......
Thanks again...

Have you tried lemon drops? I read somewhere that it might help. I'm in week 11 & have been struggling with nausea. It's encouraging to know that many women feel better in 2nd trimester. For now, I eat often & what I crave. I haven't had milk in a long time. I've craved fish sandwiches & guacamole!!

Your fortunate to live in Canada, where Diclectin is available. That drug is not available in USA. For those of you who might not know what it is, it's a combination of doxylamine-pyridoxine. It's in a long-acting form. Pyridoxine is Vitamin B6 & Doxylamine is a motion sickness medicine. Both are available separately without a prescription in USA, but not in it's long-acting form. Sorry about rambling on (it's just the pharmacist in me).

Welcome to the board & I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Just more encouragement that hopefully it will subside soon. I have found every pregnancy to be different. My first I was sick the whole nine months too, but the others it began to get shorter. Hopefully that will be the case with you. I'm entering into the 18th week and feeling better, but still have my moments. Also, try some perrier water with lime - this helped settle my stomach.

Hey Melanie, I'm craving fish sandwiches and guacomole too....terribly. What's the deal. I usually don't eat fish, but have added it for the protein benefit while pregnant, I was told to try to switch to sardines as they are little guys and at the bottom of the food chain so they tend to have less bad stuff (PCB's and mercury) in them. BUT......have you been to Culver's for their cod fish fillet sandwich.....ooh I'm sorry I see you're getting your car keys to go pick one up!! :) :) :) . You won't regret it!! And pick up some guacomole to add to the sandwich....I'm think I'm heading out too. Also make fish tacos. Make some homemade tortillas (just flour, -we like whole wheat or spelt-, olive oil, water, salt, and a few shakes of baking powder, just dump it together and roll out. Fry in olive oil. Then add fish, guacomole mixed with salsa, lettuce, fresh tomatoes, whatever you like to add. THESE ARE AWESOME!!

Edited to add: Welcome to the board Jenn!!

Hi, and congratulations! I'm early in my first trimester, too~and I have asked the same question about nausia at the Ya ya forum. In addition to what has been listed, Ginger Snaps were suggested. Soneome said that the spice ginger has stomach settling qualities. Hasn't worked for me though.

I have a friend who is on a medication for morning sickness called "Phinnegan" (sp?). She said it works great. My dr has me on pre-natal vitamins that are supposed to have something in them to help. They make me really sick for the rest of the day. I didn't take it today, and aside from the AM nausia, I was OK the rest of today...so far.:p

Hi there...
Congrats on your pregnancy.....a little tip as far as pre-natal vitamins go...in the first pregnancy i took them at bedtime......i found that as long as i stayed asleep..i was fine.....but if i awoke....then i was sick....better than being sick during the day....
My doctor has recommended just to take a 1mg of folic acid for the 1st trimester so that the vitamin does does not put me over the edge with vomiiting and nausea...cause with my first pregnancy i was hospitalized so many times with severe vomitting and dehydration....we want to avoid this at tall costs, this time around...and i certainly do not want to gain 65lbs again...
i tried to go some floor work this morning...and just could not do it...i felt immediately...i am hoping i can control my weight gain with mostly diet as i do not think i will be visiting my excercise room for any of the 1st trimester.....

I think the medication Gough was referring to is Phenergan. My doctor gave that to me in my second trimester with my son. He did not want me taking anything in the first trimester. Phenergan helped a lot but it made me terribly sleepy. An Exedrin makes me sleepy so someone else might be able to function better with the Phenergan than I did. Anyway, I was sick for the first five months and then things eased up a bit. The only thing I could eat for a while was rocky road ice cream. I know that sounds a little strange but the doctor said to eat whatever I could keep down because he was getting ready to put me in the hospital since I had lost so much weight. I also craved fish sandwiches and I had never really eaten them before the pregnancy. My weight loss and all that throwing up did not affect my son. He was born a healthy 8 pounds and 4 ounces.

Good luck!!!

Hi Jen~Congratulations! Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I can relate. Sick nine months, morning, noon & night! Both kids. YUCK! Not fun, huh? One thing that seemed to help a lil' bit for me was chicken broth. They used to have these little packets that you would add boiling water in a mug. They were only 10 calories. I want to say they were called Trim Soup or Trim something??? I think it was Lipton brand. Now, that was 25 year ago so not sure they are still around. The broth seemed to settle my stomach somewhat and wasn't too heavy. Good Luck, I hope it passes quickly for you. Don't worry about your workouts right now. Just take care of yourself and you'll be back at it soon. HUGS!

Hi Jenn! I had wicked bad all-day sickness for the first 13 weeks of my pregnancy (daughter Olivia born 9/14/02). I took b-complex about 4 hours before getting up (per my doctors suggestion), protein drinks 3-5 times a day (easier for me to "eat" these than food) and last, but not least, but most yummy but hard on the mouth: sour/salty foods were "prescribed" by my midwife: Salt-n-sour potato chips, lemon heads, minute maid regular lemonade and minute maid push-up pops. This suggestion came via my midwife from another patient who found she could tolerate really sour things best. However, after 3-4 days my mouth was so raw I couldn't do it anymore and had to take a break.

Hope this helps!
