New to Cathe and Question about BPM

Hi! I'm new to this forum. I just started doing Cathe's workouts and I love them! I've been working out consistently for about 22 years and I consider myself to be in very good shape. A few months ago I purchased a Polar Heart Rate Monitor to keep track of calories burned, heart rate, etc. I noticed that my heart rate didn't get as high as I would like. I had been doing The Firm and decided it was time to get out of my "comfort" zone. I've mastered quite a few of Cathe's workouts and I love them and they make me feel great. I do notice that when I'm doing the high intensity blasts, my heart rate can peak as high as 185. I don't feel bad, other than I'm concerned that it might be too high??? I'm not lightheaded or gasping for air. I'm just enjoying my workout. So my question is this. How high does your heart rate get when you do Cathe's intensity blasts? My heart rate never gets that high when I do Taebo or The Firm. But when I do those workouts, I barely get out of breath. I really feel that I need to step up my workouts to continue getting results.

My resting heart rate is in the 50's, my blood pressure is fine and I'm a conditioned exerciser. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I'm 39.

My heart rate gets up there too when doing the blasts. I feel fine and recover fast, so it's okay. I believe that getting the HR out of your comfort zone for a few minutes is the purpose of interval training to increase cardio conditioning, in which the Imaxes do.

My age is 40, RHR is around 43 and I'm healthy.

I asked my doctor about it yesterday and she thought it was fine, but she was hesitant. She preferred that I stay below 180 because there weren't many health benefits going over 180. I'm just going to do it because I feel great and I love Cathe's workouts. When Cathe turns the heat up, your heart rate is bound to get up there!!!

Any other thoughts on this?

Hey Karen,

The last time I did Imax 2 my heart rate got up to 197! And yes, that is accurate, as I have checked it numerous times over the years with a watch and my pulse and various HR monitors. Typically my HR is in the 170's - 190's on intense workouts (and I only like to do workouts that get my HR up so I know I'm working). But 197 is probably the highest it's been. When I ride, my HR will get into the low 190's on hills. A typical ride for me keeps my HR in the mid to upper 170's/low 180's. I've gone through all the tests with a cardiologist (treadmill test where they inject stuff in you and take pics of your heart before and after) and my doc said I'm one of the healthiest people he's ever seen. :) I just have a high heart rate.

I'm 43 and I'm embarassed to say I don't know my resting HR (somewhere around 160 I think) and I have very low blood pressure - averages about 110/60.

Welcome, by the way!!!!!

Susan

Your age...the 100% for you is about 181 bpm...now, that is using the 220-age method which i think is inaccuratefor those in really good shape...and clearly, you are!

I seriously say you are fine hitting 185 because you are only hitting it briefly...you are not sticking there for an extended period of time. The whole spike and recover in heart rate during a workout is an excellent way to zap calories.

I was a bit disappointed in how low my heart rate stayed during most of the workout (IMAX II). I guess that just goes to show you how much Cathe's workouts really do condition your entire body! They are still hard, though!

Keep at it with no worries...you're doing great!

Wow, the highest mine gets during Imaxes, is 160, and usually more like 155 and I am 44. I think I would die if I were that high, so more power to ya.
