New Runners April 2010

Good morning ladies,
Yesterday I did 30 minutes on the elliptical at the gym after taking all my students to Asheville for a field trip and teaching puppy class. This morning I did Bum Bum and I'm going to walk the dogs this afternoon.

In the interest of scientific study, I took my measurements this morning. I have lost 1 in from my hips/thighs and 2 in from my waist! I am still "failing" the pencil test but there has been progress. My weight and bodyfat have been consistent.

Jane ~ Good luck!

Tricia ~ Ha ha ha! Ben loves wasabi too but I only let him have a little tiny bit...

Cindi ~ Glad you had good spin and PT workouts!

Alisha ~ Such a huge part of eating is mental/emotional isn't it? I am really focusing on eating when I'm hungry and stopping when I'm not hungry (not when I'm full!). It's amazing how little food will satisfy me when my goal is "not hungry" as opposed to "full".

Lisa

I'm going to try that pencil test, Lisa. I think I would fail too. I have heard of another pencil test to determine if you need a bra or not (need I say more about where you put the pencil?) I know for sure no pencil can be held up there! LOL! The only reason I wear a bra is because I don't want people to see when I get a chill. ;)

Cindi - Sounds like you have a fun weekend ahead! Enjoy! I love your comment about the pencil test!

Lisa - You're making progress and that's something! I don't know what the pencil test is, but I wouldn't be too concerned about failing it if you're doing that well on your measurements! WTG!

I'm just a broken record right now about my workouts, so I will just refer you to previous posts! Going to try getting in a CC run tomorrow and a SS run on Sunday!

Jane - Lots of luck tomorrow! I'll be sending you energy for strength and endurance (and some speed, too) for your race!

Hi Ladies,

I'm just dropping in to say hi. I'm all ready for the race tomorrow. It will be cloudy and probably humid with temps in the 60s.

Tricia ~ I loved your wasabi story! :D Thanks for the well-wishes. I need all the strength, endurance and speed that I can get.

Cindi ~ Have fun tomorrow and at Sunday school too. That sounds like so much fun!

Lisa ~ I'm glad you are seeing progress. Have a fun weekend!!

Alisha ~Hope you have a great weekend!!

Hi ladies,
I was feeling very fatigued yesterday so this morning I just did Bollywood dance on FitTV and then a nice 2 mile brisk run at the orchard with the pups. The weather is turning off rainy now so I'm at work and will spend my afternoon in my lab.

Jane ~ Good luck!
Lisa

Hi Ladies,

I ran my 10K race this morning. I only did 20 seconds better than last year but I had fun. The weather was humid in the the mid 60's but it started raining when I got to around the 3.5 mile mark. There was some thunder and a bit a lightening but it really wasn't too bad. The rain was pretty steady until the end of the race. I felt fine until the 5+ mile mark when my quads starting hurting me. That's the first time that has happened in a race. I really struggled on the last part of the course. Since it was raining, the band was not out and the DJ that is stationed at "Heartbreak Hill" towards the end of the race was not there either. My dear sister came out in the rain, though to cheer us on. I met a really nice man who was 76 years old. He told me he started running at age 62. I told him that I wanted to be like him when I "grew up". I made him blush. I ended up beating him at the end.

All in all it was a great race. I have a double 5K next week. I have a 5K on Friday night and a 5K on Saturday morning.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Wow, Jane! In the rain, too! Hey, 20 seconds is 20 seconds! Congratulations! That man you met makes me feel better about starting to workout again at 47! I'll be 49 this year and am looking forward to many more years of workouts and runs!

I'll be interested to hear how you fare doing two back to back like that!

Have a great day!

Hi Everybody!

Its Caturday! I'm doing a big batch of nuttin' cause I can. I will be back on the road in the morning. I went to see Clash of the Titans this afternoon, it wasn't Shakespeare but it was funny to see Liam Neeson as Zeus!

I hope everybody is well!

Alisha

LOL! I love Liam Neeson, but Clash of the Titans? I couldn't believe he did this movie! Waiting for it to hit Netflix!

Hi Everyone,

Today I went out to the track and did the following workout:

200m run
20 swings
1 bleacher run
400m run
40 jump squats
2 bleacher runs
600m run
60 step ups
3 bleacher runs
800m run
80 push ups (I did 40 push ups and 40 sit ups)
4 bleacher runs

Tricia ~ I did the back to back races last year and survived. If I remember right, my time was less than a minute apart. The better time being the first race on Friday night. I placed in my age group in both races. I took 3rd place in the Friday night race and 1st in the Saturday race. The Saturday race was a new race so it my small and my only competition was my sister. She finished second to last but ended up with a medal.

Alisha ~ I'm happy you got to do a big batch of nuttin'. I love it!!

Hi to Lisa and Cindi!

Wow! That's awesome Jane! I'm sure you'll just as well, if not better, this time! As long as they aren't more than 5K, I could probably get through something like that! I did 8 miles yesterday in the rain! It was a fantastic run! I did CC Press Play and ran starting at the house. I wasn't home yet by the end of the CC workout, so I ran the rest of the way home as well! I was soaking wet when I got back, but it felt great! Of course, now my legs are killing me! LOL! Good thing it was just chest and back today!

Hello to Cindi, Alisha and Lisa! Hope you had great weekends!

I'm not huge on running in the rain, its so slippery.

I'm going out for about 45 minutes of one minute intervals.

Hi Everybody!

Alisha

Hi ladies!

Congratulations, Jane! Running through the rain - awesome.

Weekend was good, looking forward to May.

ood Afternoon,

Here is my workout for tonight. I'm giving my legs a rest tonight! :)

KETTLEBELL DIRTY THIRTY
Do 30 reps of each exercise

Kettlebell push press x right
Kettlebell push press x left
Kettlebell sit up
Kettlebell swings x right
Kettlebell swings x left
Push ups
Kettlebell back row x right
Kettlebell back row x left
Kettlebell pullover/sit up/press
Kettlebell cleans x right
Kettlebell cleans x left

Tricia ~ The reason why we decided to do the back to back races is because this man we know from races told us that he once did a 5K in the morning, a 5K in the evening and another 5K the next day. This guy is 73 years old!!! LOL! So my sister said we can at least do 2 - 5K's back to back. This 73 year old guy does 5Ks in about 25 minutes and did the 10K this weekend in 53 minutes. He's amazing and the sweetest man you'd ever meet.

Great job on the 8 miles in the rain yesterday!!! Running in the rain isn't too bad. It certainly made the run easier on Saturday. Alisha, I didn't find the road slippery but my sister said she slipped once or twice.

Alisha - Have fun with the intervals!

Thanks Cindi! Somehow I feel like a "real" runner when I run in the rain.

Hi Lisa!

Hi everyone,
Yesterday I did Providence and a 3 mile walk with the pups. I also spent several hours stuffing envelopes for my local animal rescue's fundraising plea. This morning I was stiff so I haven't done anything yet. I might go to the gym after puppy class tonight and get on the elliptical.

Jane ~ Congrats on your race! Nicely done. I also feel very hardcore when I run in the rain even if I'm only doing 5.5 mph :D

Alisha ~ Sounds like a fun weekend. I hope Zeus lived up to your expectations.

Hi to Cindi and Tricia!

Lisa

Alisha - Enjoy your intervals!

Cindi - Me, too! I'm really hoping May is warmer!

Jane - I like the title of your workout! I think the surface your running on makes a difference in the rain. I didn't have any problems. Of course, I also was wearing my Vibrams which have yet to give any problems on wet surfaces. I think your 73 yo running friend is awesome! I want to be like him!

Lisa - Kudos to you for helping your rescue group! My legs were sore today, too! Just not accustomed to running that long! Going to have to work on that if I ever want to do a half marathon! I'm just hoping to be able to get through Rhythmic Step tomorrow morning! Not just because of the soreness, but also after last week's performance. Blllltttttt!

Hi ladies! Yesterday was spin class and abs. Today I'm doing weights and probably zumba class too. I'm going to try run/walk tomorrow and see how the heel does.

My life is getting away from me - just feel like I need to get caught up on so many things (mostly paperwork and housework which I hate!)

Tricia - I wanted to tell you that King Arthur Flour company is coming to our middle school next week to do a free baking lesson for our 7th graders (thanks to me since I coordinated the whole thing). They are giving every child (270+) 4#'s of flour, yeast, recipe, bread bags. Enough to make 2 loaves of bread. One they keep and one they bring back to school to donate to the local food pantry. I'm very excited!

Cindi that is so cool about King Arthur! Thats awesome!

I'm doing Step Jam today. The sugar monster is sleeping now:D (aka my appetite.)

Clash of the Titans was fun. I did not bother with the 3D version because I knew it wasn't designed for it, rather its just a 2D movie that was up-resolutioned which is sort of silly. But, hey dudes running around with spears and Liam Neeson as Zeus, whats not to like lol!

Alisha

Hi Everyone!

Here is the workout I'm doing today:

5 Rounds
Bear Crawl 50m
100 Jump Rope
Bear Crawl back 50m
21 Kettlebell Swings

Lisa ~ I'm sorry puppy class got rained out but I'm glad you got a workout in!

Tricia ~ How do your legs feel today?

Cindi ~ I LOVE King Arthur!! It's go cool that they are coming to you school and donating the bread making supplies. WTG on setting it up!!!

Alisha ~ Have fun with Step Jam. Ssssshhh....don't wake the sugar monster!! :p
