New Member with a few strengthening questions

Hello Cathe. I started working out with Cathe dvd’s on September 10, 2009 and I have a few questions hopefully you or someone else may be able to help me with. I have not worked out in many years before this so I am not in the greatest shape but am striving to get there. I’m sorry if this turns out to be long.

1. For about a year and half even before I started working out I was having a problem with my left leg. It’s like the muscles on the back side want to seize up on it. It was so bad that just walking from my car into a store would wear me out. Since I’ve been working out it has improved but I have such a hard time completing the workouts because of it. The part that gets to me the most is the 7 knee repeaters. When I do them it makes me unstable to continue with the rest of the moves. I think that the weakness in this leg could also be caused from a back injury I had about 5 years ago (broke my lower back), I’m not sure but my back doesn’t give me much of a problem now. I just know that I have a lot more strength in my right leg than the left and was wondering if there is an exercise that I could do to even up the strength in my legs so I could be more stable in my workouts.

2. I have the Basic Step and the Low Impact Circuit so far. I am looking forward to moving up to the more intense workouts. Is there a trick to “stepping lightly”? I am 5’5.5” and currently weight 154 pounds. While I may be a little overweight I am not big. I have always weighed more than I look like I should. But, when I try to do any moves that involve jumping or more intensity I feel like I have bricks holding me down. You and all the girls make it look so easy. I chose the low impact dvd’s because I have pain in my knees when I bend but so far the only problem I’m having is the left leg as mentioned above so I’m hoping to be able to move up to the higher intensity soon as they just look like so much fun!

3. I have the same problem with my left arm being much weaker than the right also. Any suggestions on evening up the strength would be greatly appreciated.

4. I am not even able to do one regular pushup. What’s the best exercise to strengthen the muscles I need to be able to do them?

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me and sorry for making this so long.

Not Cathe here, but my suggestion would be to discuss some of this with your doctor as this seems to be something lingering from a much more serious injury. I would be afraid of it turning into something that lingers or that it could get worse if not handled properly.:)
