never weigh myself...anyone else?

Having had a battle with the scale when I suffered from anorexia years ago, I've stayed away from the scale. Last time I weighed myself eas last summer on my honeymoon when I was feeling very good in my body and I was 114. Now, I know I've gained a litte weight..I'm 5'2" so 5lbs can be monumental on me. I really don't want to worry about the number but fear that it will "freak me out" or whatever since I don't feel "great" right now. SO, I finally registered on fitday this week and wow! you can really see where calories sneak in. I work out 6 days a week, very hard so I know my excercise is fine and now I know I am cleaning things up with my diet. The question is, how do I figure out how many calories to eat to lose weight if I am not sure of my current weight? Can I calculate the amount of calories needed to maintain 114 and go by that? Or estimate my weight. I'm debating the two, just thought I'd ask for opinions. Thank you! Thank you! Have to run...

Hi

I have to admit I am trying to get myself out of the habit of weighing myself as I feel it can be destructive as like you said you being to worry too much about some digits on a display.

Most calories counters go by weight personally I would go for between 1800 - 1500 calories and no lower than 1500. But use this as a guide remember to eat clean and balanced, so you need carbs, proteins, fats and minerals.

I eat 3 meals with 2 to 3 snacks thoroughout the day to keep hunger pangs at bay. Don't miss meals even if you had a bad day before just start each day as a new day. I would also say measure your progress not by scales but by your clothes they are a good indicator of who your body is developing.

Rest days are important and shock to your system changes to your exercise routine. With all its problems I have learned to love my body it is the truly the only thing I own I don't want to add to the problems I have by wrecking it with destructive eating and exercising habits and this is something we all need to learn in a world were so many of the women held up to use a great examples have some very destructive eating habits.

Anyway that's my 2 cents.

Hello Chloe,

I never weigh myself either. I don't own a scale. As long as I can get into the clothes I want to, I just don't care what weight that is. I am sure I could be slimmer but as long as I have lots of energy, good skin, hair and nails and all the right curves on my body then I am happy.

I don't really exercise to lose weight as such, more to give my body strenght and definition: you can be large but still very attractive if you have a nipped in waist, pert breasts and good skin. Exercise gives you that.

I just want to say hello to Barbara there too.

Hi Yen

How are you the wedding was fab I had a really good time. The funny thing was the bride arrived but the groom was late. No leave get weighed to when you go for your yearly physical to annoying and upsetting, and your weight is always dependant on factors not taken into account by a scale.

Once in a blue moon I'll weigh myself--it's very rare! We actually keep our scale in the garage and only take it out if my husband wants to weigh himself and I'll jump on just for kicks! I luckily maintained the same weight since I hit 120lbs in high school! I'm 33 with the same eating habits and activity level!I go by the way my clothes fit! If I had a cheat day I don't need to jump on a scale to confirm that I put on a lb or 2--I just know what I have to do! The scale is only good tool to use to keep record of your weight! If your doing any planning that will revolve around caloric intake, I'd suggest getting on the scale once a week to get an accurate calculation for your food planning for the upcoming week--then when your maintaining-you'll most likely be at the same level and lose the scale, and keep up with the good eating! Also consider taking body measurements before you start any weightloss stratedy-- The tale of the tape!-- Bust: Don't squish yourself -- measure all the way around your bust and back right at your nipple line, and make sure the tape measure is not lower.

2. Chest: Measure under your breasts but as high up as you can go, keeping the tape measure parallel to this line when you reach it around your back.

3. Waist: Measure wherever it is the smallest (if you have "no waist" go around yourself right at the navel line).

4. Hips: Measure at the very biggest part -- even if that is so low that you are almost on the top of your thighs.

5. Midway: Measure midway between the very biggest part of your hips and your waist.

6. Thighs: Measure wherever they are the biggest.

7. Knees: Measure right above the knee.

8. Calves: Measure wherever they are the biggest.

9. Upper arm: Measure wherever they are biggest above your elbows.

10. Forearms: Measure wherever they are biggest below your elbows.
Having these on record, you can check your weight and measurements before any rotations especially if your looking for a specific goal! When your rotation is finished re-measure and keep on file for future reference! This way you'll know how your body adapted to a certain program!

I hate to weigh myself. I do it as little as possible. I am 5'4" and usually weigh from 145-147. I hate weighing that much. Most of my excess is around my waist, and thighs. I have that wonderful tire look around my waist. I am beginning to see ripples on my chest. Do you know what I mean?? The top of my waist, I am starting to see good definition. I wear a size 8. I have so tried to figure out that Fit Day, and I just can not. I tried to put Fiber One Cereal in there, and it would not take it!!! Or Pumkin seeds. I would really like to use that. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?? Thanks!!!

other noted measurements

Hi Anna! I though you'd be interested in some more info on measurements! Keeping track of your health, weight and measurements is a great way to monitor your progress and stay motivated! The scale measures your body weight! Knowing your bodyfat is a better indicator of a healthy weight! There are several professional methods of determining body fat content by a physician! Three most popular are electrical impedance, skin calipers and underwater weighing! You can also calculate this on your own by BMI (body mass index) check this site--http://www.odfs.com/profile.htm also you can further determine health risks by doing a hip to waist ratio check out http://www.odfs.com/profile.htm --I know you'll find these useful in reaching your goals! I don't have a scale in my house and the only time I am weighed is when I'm at my doctor's office. And then, she has to fight me to get on the scale.

To Lori S.:
Try entering the brand name first, like General Mills Fiber One cereal. If they don't have it listed, you can create it so that you can reference it in the future. For example, if you eat Fiber One often, you'd want all the nutritional info all ready to click on next time. You have to enter it all though, one time.

You could do that by clicking on a similar food, like Kellogg's All-Bran. Then you just change the name and the other nutritional differences, then you can "save" the new food. At least that's what I remember from Fitday a long time ago.

My opinion (never worth more than a cup of coffee at a cheap diner) is that it's good to weigh yourself (once a week, or at least once a month) to keep you out of denial.

I talked to gettinfit@38, and she said when she was very heavy she never weighed herself, and would go to the doctor every year and find she had gained another 35 lbs. Surprise! It's too easy to let the pounds sneak up on you, so I think it's a good idea to grit your teeth and get on a scale. As far as measurements go, I don't do that so much as I go by the way clothes fit and how I look in my full length mirror. If I notice a difference in the clothes, THEN I take some measurements.

What you are saying makes sense, but it's a very fine line between weighing yourself to keep yourself in check and weighing yourself to become obsessive about what you weigh and let yourself be ruled by the scales. I read Joan Collins weighs herself every morning and if she is just a little over, she restricts her diet for the day. Now some women can do that (she looks good for it), but me? I think I might get upset by that slight change and be depressed for the whole day, so I prefer not to do it at all. I just go by the fit of my clothes and the mirror. I am not a super star who is on t.v. all time so a little pound here and there isn't going to ruin my image for the cameras.

No, weighing yourself everyday is NOT a good idea. I'm just saying that it's too easy not to weigh yourself when you've had bad eating weeks, and the weeks can go into to months and you can be faced with a substantial weight gain. It's more like a reality check than an obsession.

I know for me, weighing myself is not a good idea. An example. I went to the doctor and was weighed. The scale said that I weighed 20 pounds more than I did last time I was there. I was devistated. It took me some time to work through that and realize what was the reason for it.

It wasn't from weight gain. It was from water gain because I had sustained a very bad injury to my knee and I had so much swelling that I couldn't bend my knee but 10 degrees. That's why I went in there was to see if I could get the water drained off. My doctor wouldn't do it, because she just doesn't drain water off the knee. She had a partner that would but I needed to jump on a plane and didn't have enough time to wait for her partner.

So I had a miserable weekend out of town at a get 2 gether with other members of KBT and I screwed with my eating to try to get my weight back down. That was very stupid because it prolonged my recovery.

Plus, as a recovered anorexic, the scale does very bad things to my head. I did buy a scale once and I became obsessed with it within two weeks. I started weighing myself everyday, sometimes twice a day. Thank Gawd I realized what the heck was happening to me and I threw the thing out.

However, people track progress it’s that you do track it. Either through the scale, the measuring tape, the clothing size, food journaling, exercise journaling, whatever, the key is that you do track it.

Just my humble opinion.

RE: Scales: The Golden Calf of Our Age

I've toyed with the idea over the past few weeks or so about starting a Scale-Haters club here on the Cathe forums. I haven't weighed myself in over a year, and before that I did it only every few months; before that once a week, and in my darker days three times a day.

I find myself in rare, gentleman's disagreement with Honeybunch about using the scale as a means of staying out of denial - far more often than not, it is used as a means of staying in a constant state of dissatisfaction and anxiety. It limits one's self-perception to one tiny, simple number, and people over-focus on that one number to the exclusion of everything else they should be focusing on. And it's a number that can change, especially for women, depending on the time of day, day of the week, and time of the month.

IMHO, people should be educated away from weighing themselves unless they complement their weight-ins with ongoing fitness assessments as well - i.e. how much they can DO and LIFT as well as how much they weigh. That'd be more realistic.
