the newest videos on my "want" list...

I would like to know how the Fitprime tapes and the Slim in Six tapes compare in intensity to Cathe tapes. I want to make sure these are not duds!! Also, any good comments on Body Pump??

AND...Ok, don't shoot me here....but anyone have the Paula Abdul tapes?? The dancing aspect of them really appeals, but how are they??

Any info is appreciated!!

Hi Janice,

I have a Paula Abdul tape but the dancing was too complicated for me. If you want to cover the postage I'll send it to you!

Email me at taco3333at hotmail.com if you are interested in trying it.

:)

Fitprime and Slim Series are both very different from Cathe, and from readiing posts on videofitness.com, I've found that people rate them at varying levels of intensity.

Here are my observations:
Fitprime alternates weight work with short cardio moves, sometimes done with light weights. Many of the moves are quite novel (some say "weird," others say "innovative.") For example, you can do push-ups with one hand on a med ball and the other on a tall step, or squats that emphasize one leg. I find them to be intense, but in a different way from a Cathe tape. If you want to try them out, I'd suggest starting with "Strong Bear" (they also tend to have kind of whacky names. When I think of "Strong Bear," I wonder if there is a "sits" in the woods move!) which is one of the most liked ones.

I find that Slim Series is intense, but in a cumulative way. When you follow one of the rotations, you work out almost daily, using light weights (the instructors uses 3, 5 and 8 pounds) and resistance bands. There are also plyometrics and some light very low impact cardio interspersed with the weight work. When I did a two-week Slim Series rotation, I felt that my legs were "tighter" than previously, and I began to see more definition in my abs. I did, however, miss heavy upper body work, so I threw in a PUB workout. If you want to try Slim Series without commiting to all 6 tapes, I'd suggest trying the "Keep it Up" DVD, which contains a 40 minute workout similar to SS as well as an ab workout and a stretch workout. "Keep it Up" is kind of an "unofficial" part of the Slim Series, as it was created as a follow-up to "Slim in Six." The SlimSeries workouts themselves are and hour long, except for two that are about 80 minutes long.

One big bad point about Slim Series, IMO, is that the music is used over and over and over again throughout the series, and it's not that great. Fortunately, there is a "no music" option, which I've really enjoyed.

Paula Abdul

Hi Janice,
I just wanted to comment on Paula's workouts. I must say I really enjoy Get Up and Dance, which is the first workout she put out. When I want to workout with no step and can't get up the energy for Hi/Lo,which kills my calf muscles - I do this. It is complex choreography at first, but once you get it down, it's fun. And Paula has a great bunch of people (her friends and neighbors!) in it. Just to prove that "anybody" can dance. And, there's a really good Ab workout on it as well.

Her second workout (I think it's called Cardio Dance? or something like that...) I didn't care for this. It wasn't that it was too complex, I just didn't enjoy the workout or the dance moves.

Just my two cents -I think you can get Get Up and Dance at Target for about $6.99(VHS). Definitely worth that much!

Hope this helps!

Just respectfully disgreeing with Kathryn: You might like SS, but I would not start with Keep It Up as Kathryn suggested. this one I find too easy, compared to the rest of the SS (disappointingly so). I don't think it fairly represents Slim Series workouts because of this. I think all of the Slim Series workouts are good (except the verdict is out for me on Keep It Up although I do like the accompanying workouts on that disc so no plans to part with it) and I think you could try any of them based on what you were looking to emphasize (except for Cool It Off which is a good stretching routine ). Shape it up is all weights (78 mins), Tone It Up is compound weight/cardio ( approx 60 mins), as is Mix it up - well, sort of (this one really mixes it all up using alternating segments of weights/cardio as well as compound moves, and uses dumbbells and resistance bands) (approx 60 mins), then there is Firm It Up, an all-lower body workout that is quite refreshing-no weights but a killer nonetheless (57 mins), and Tear It Up, which is a mix and alternates cardio sections with weighted sections (think this one uses resistance bands too) (78 mins). Try ebay, video fitness exchange, firm ya ya's swapmeet. Have a good time!

ps I am not laughing at Paula Abdul. I have a wide variety of instructors and intensities in my collection - I even have Tamilee's Fit to the Hits! :)

The original question was on the Slim in Six series, not the Slim Series. The Slim in Six, which I have never seen or done, is supposed to be much easier than the Slim Series. More geared to getting started in working out. Keep it Up is sort of the graduation tape that you can get to maintain what you got in the Sin6.

I did the Slim Training rotation which uses all 6 workouts of the Slim Series in a week for 4 weeks. It was a good change and I felt like I accomplished something, but I don't feel they are as intense as Cathe. I went heavier than Debbie did and got a good workout.

There are quality issues that can detract from the workout, unfortunately. Some people can overlook that because they like the workout; for others, it destroys the whole thing.

So, I would say that the Slim-in-Six would be much too easy for you if you do Cathe regularly. The Slim Series is a good series of workouts, but don't expect any of them to be another Body Max.

Thank you everyone for your generous replies. I have bid on the "Cool if Off" slim series tape on Ebay. Figured I can always use some extra stretching! Might pass on the Slim series for now, but still want Fitprime Strong Bear and Fast Cheetah. Makes me SO MAD though that these are not in DVD AND they cost a ton!! What is up with that??!! You would think they were gold or something with how much all the vendors seem to want for them!!

I am looking into Paula..will probably get the older tape..looked at Target and they didn't have it currently. REALLY want BodyPump too...I will probably break down and get that soon as I don't have too many total body tapes of that duration. AND, I have yet to get the BodyBlast series from Cathe, which is, of course, the most important of them all.

Sueter..your comments were helpful. I hate it when I get a new vid and it is just so easy. I think for this reason I will hold off on them and get the Paula tape for sheer "fun".
