I've had a sinus infection (the "Creeping Crud" as Cathy "RunninTeach" calls it :7) now for weeks. I last got on the treadmill a week ago and was at pretty low power. I took 2 days off this week to try to recup. I'm definitely having less crud today and REALLY need a boost. Do you think it's okay for me to go to the gym? I'm thinking if I just do my best and don't push it, it can't hurt anything, right?

I disagree. Obviously your immune system has been having a hard time with this, so why put the extra strain on it? Now seems the perfect time for something like restorative yoga (which also has some deep breathing in).

Nancy:

my doctor always gave me a double whammy prescription that dealt sinus infections a KO and got rid of them after 5 days of treatment, with enormous relief beginning after 2 days. She gave me an antibiotic and a drug to help reduce mucus production. This second drug is now available OTC and I just used it for a sinus problem and it cleared it up real quick. Get yourself some Max Strength Mucinex (blue bottle). It really works to clear that stuff out of there. I tried the red version first, but it contains a drug called pseudophedrine which I cannot tolerate. Maybe you can? It is a nasal decongestant.

A couple of days of this and you should be good to go, cardio or gym.

If you are really stuffed up and having difficulty breathing, how can you go to the gym? That's your call, I'm afraid!

Good point, Kathryn. My immune system does seem to be shot. I'm going to try to just relax. Unfortunately, I have to go out tonight for dinner about an hour away, involving lots of trains and cold winds. Lately, the cold winds really seem to blow right through me. :(

Nancy, I'm chiming in late and I'm sure you've already left to go to dinner -- just wanted to say I'm so sorry you're been battling "creeping crud." Funny that your friend calls it that, because I've used that expression for years to describe exactly how a sinus infection feels. FEEL BETTER CUTIE and STAY WARM! :) I've never been colder in my life than I get when we visit DH's family in suburban NYC and go "into the City" for some event -- the wind can just howl down those streets! I guess the buildings create a canyon effect, don't they?

Also, I second the idea of Mucinex. I have never seen the blue bottle version -- I've only seen and used the one that you now have to ask the pharmacist for because of the pseudoephedrine in it. That version will most definitely keep you awake, but it knocks the heck out of anything bothering my sinuses.

((HUGS!!!)))

I agree that you should take it easy, especially if you're having trouble breathing. I like the idea of doing something like yoga or a nice stretch to help you relax. I hope you have a nice evening out, though! An early birthday celebration, perhaps? :D

Nancy,

completely off topic....where were you in your avatar..perhaps Krohn conservatory in Cincinnati??.......or perhaps not??

Thanks everyone! I'm back from dinner, the long train rides, the cold winds and I'm stuffed up again. I will check out Mucinex as soon as the stores open again after Easter. This dinner meant a lot to my DH, so I went with a smile on my face, but I feel like the creeping crud. :(

Joanna, in the avatar I was at the Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Gardens. An amazing toy train display with miniature NYC buildings made from twigs, rocks and leaves.

Here's another shot of the train show:

Actually, I think I just called it the plain ol' crud, :7 but the creeping crud seems to fit even better. Or maybe it should be the (bleeping) crud 'cuz it absolutely sucks! Sorry about the persistent infection, Nance.

I am prone to sinusitis, and it does tend to linger. I just listen carefully to my body and play it by ear. I do think illness is a sign that your body needs rest, but if you're starting to feel better, an easy walk on the treadmill (or other light exertion) is probably a safe bet to ease back into things.

Here's a CNN article (2006) about working out while sick that might be of interest:
