Need immediate weiner dog help!

B/f just rushed my little baby to the emergency vet. She was in the yard playing, went to the bathroom, then started acting weird and walked over to the deck like she wanted to come inside. She was walking weird and her breathing sounded strange. Her stomach was also very tight. He called and said from what he told the vet, they think she had a seizure?????????????? What in the he_ _!!! He said they're common in weiner dogs. Does anyone have experience with this? If this is the case, I'm going to be terrified to leave her! She's almost 5 and has never had one before that I know of. What could cause this?????

Kim - Cheyenne occationally has little "breathing" fits. It almost sounds like an asthma attack. She starts wheezing and hyperventalating and she sucks her side in and out really hard. She's done this since she was a puppy though and if you pet her and tell her to chill out, she calms down and it goes away. I've never heard that seizures were common in weiner dogs. It's seems odd that she hasn't had any problems before now. Keeps us updated on her! :/ Are you planning to take her in to your regular vet too?
 
Kim, I don't have any experience with this, but I have heard the wiener dogs are prone to seizures.

I'd get her in to the vet anyway, just to have a physical and to see if the vet notices anything odd. Keep an eye on her, too. That's so scary! I hope she's fine! Our American Eskimo has had a few seizures, but she has Cushing Disease and a collapsed trachea (she's 14), and it's fairly typical - but that does not make it any less terrifying. Jimmy and I are sending healing vibes your way!
 
OK...it wasn't a seizure. The vet did "tests" on her, took blood work, listened to her lungs, stomach, etc., and said this was a "warning sign" for her back. He said he spine is ok and has no damage and he didn't think there was any damage to the discs. But he said she is going to have to stop running wide open and jumping off the deck. It LOOKS like she doesn't actually have an injury, but was just in pain from something. I'm getting an appt with the regular vet for x-rays and he gave her a shot (muscle relaxer). I was SO worried about them hurting their backs and now here I am....dealing with it. The little 1 1/2 y/o male jumps off EVERYTHING. I don't know how I'll ever get him to stop. Any thoughts???
 
If you ever figure out how to make them not jump off of things, let me know! All three of mine think they are "air weiners". Dakota literally skips the last 2 steps when he comes down the stairs. I am always worrying about their backs. :(

Let us know how the x-rays go! My three are all sending healthy back vibes to her!
 
Glad to hear there's no seizures going on. Hopefully the back issue will just be a muscle pull and nothing more serious. Happy, healthy doggie vibes coming your way!!

Thanks so much for the good thoughts. We gave her a bath because the medicine they gave her made her smell awful. Before we could get to her, she rolled on the carpet and hurt herself again. She stiffened up and acted as if it hurt to breathe. For the last 2 hrs, we've had her bundled up in a warm blanket on the bed and have just layed with her. She relaxed a fe minutes later and is now up walking, eating, and drinking. We're dropping her off at the vet tomorrow and THEY WILL check her over thoroughly, to include x-rays.

I'm glad I logged on today...I must have unconsciously known that weiner dog help was needed ;-) I'm so sorry that your baby is experiencing pain. I felt myself tensing up just reading your post. We are very familiar with doxie back issues having two of our boys rupture discs and have to have surgery :( Tanner (7 yrs) is still with us and recovered fully but we lost Docker 2 yrs ago when he was 8 yrs old after he ruptured a second disc in his neck. The damage was too severe to fix with another surgery...we miss our boy.

I'm crossing my fingers that her x-rays come out well but I really urge you to try and keep her mobility to a minimum right now. After our boys had surgery they were confined to their cages for a month afterwards. I know it's really hard to keep them confined b/c they tug at our heartstrings with their whining and such but I would keep her in her kennel or if you have a playpen for at least a week. Don't allow her the opportunity to jump on your bed, the couch or even use stairs. Another thing that we learned is that allowing them to run full boar or playing tug o war is really dangerous and can over time lead to back issues. Actually we think that Docker's issues came from always letting him run long distances for his ball at the park for many years.

It's been a hair pulling experience trying to teach our doxies what their limitations are when it comes to jumping and we work on it everyday. We do not allow them in our bedroom anymore b/c our bed is so high and we've bought some steps for them to use when they want to get on the livingroom furniture. Tanner our oldest uses them more than Tucker, he's our superdog ;-) Tucker still has a lot of puppy in him since he's a little over a year so we really have to watch him. He'll jump off the back of the couch if we're not watching x(

Let us know how the x-rays turn out. Give your babies a little squeeze for me and my two wiener dogs.

Chastity - I'm so glad you posted. Unfortunately, Mindy HATES a kennel so we don't have one for either of them. They roam freely through the main part of the house when we're home, but we keep them out of bedrooms when we're gone. Mindy, the one that's hurt, does not jump. She will occasionally jump off our deck (about 2-3 feet) but we usually try to just set her in the yard. She LOVES her toys and will run WIDE OPEN if you throw one. That will now be ending.

The boy is 1 1/2 years old and jumps on and off everything. They both sleep in the bed with us so I don't see how we cn now lock them out of the room. It would kill me. He'll jump off the bed in the middle of the night to go get water. We bought the little stairs and neither would use them. Other stairs aren't an issue as we have a one story house. Jax, the boy, jumps off the back of the couch so I moved the furniture around so he can't do that anymore. I don't have a clue how to keep him from jumping on and off the seating portion of the couch. I try to redirect him and tell him "no" when I catch him jumping but I don't think he understands. It would also kill me to have to put them in pens/crates during the day. It would just break his spirit. Ironically, his parents were jumpers and have never had problems with their backs, per their owner. They are much older too...over 10.

The emergency vet said Mindy's spine was not damanged and he didn't think there was any damage at all. Is it possible she just pulled a muscle? We left her at our regular vet today and told them to check her from top to bottom. I hope the woman realizes that means x-rays. She's been eating and drinking and going to the bathroom so I guess that's good. She's 5 and I guess the discs start to calcify???? She will walk around slowly and the other one won't try and get her to play because I think he knows something's wrong. I guess I'll just have to see what the vet says but I may buy a kennel/crate type thing for her until she heals. At least that would force her to lay down during the day while we're gone. Do you have any other suggestions on the jumping? Or anything else? Should I buy a pen big enough for them both? Would that help ease them into it? HOw do you keep food/water in it without them knocking it over?

Nuggies and wedgie to all you who call dachshunds wiener dogs. x( They do not like to be called that. Nor do they like to be called "doxies" or "dash-hounds." They are proud little German peeps who don't want to be mistaken for hotdogs! ;)
My SIL recently had to spend her kitchen renovation money for back surgery for her little dachshund who had major back problems--if she didn't opt for the surgery the little fuzzy would have been permanently paralyzed so there was no question for her about what she wanted to do. Her other little guy has back issues as well and he is not allowed to jump on or off of anything. He has a little set of stairs he climbs to get to the couch. I am sending healing vibes to your little one. :+
 
Beavs - How did the little one do after surgery? Will he/she be okay? How does she keep them from jumping?
 
She is doing pretty good right now. She does have a tendency to pee in her crate and the vet said this is likely because her muscles are not as strong after all she has been through. So, she needs more bathroom breaks which have not been a problem. Her family monitors her and she is not allowed out of the crate when no one is home. She still jumps on occasion but not nearly as much. So in essence, a crate is key. Good luck with everything. I'll be thinking of you and sending healing vibes.
