Need Help

I was cleaning the other day and came across a bunch of old calendars. I realized I have been tracking my workouts since 1995! However, as I leafed through each year, not once was I consistent. I would start out strong 4-5 times a week (lasting 2 months) then off for two months. Then 1-3 times a week for a couple months - then off again.

I see in these years my weight has fluctuated about 15 pounds. - I go up - then work out -- I go down. That right there may be my answer, I'm working out to lose the weight and then once I do, I go off my plan. (Not very smart -- or healthy!)

I can't believe I've been doing this for 13 years!! I should look and feel better than I do!

Whatever the reason, I'd love to hear from you. How do you stick with your workout program???

Thanks!
Michelle

I can't help you Michelle because I am exactly the same way! Thank goodness I'm not the only one that does this. I'd love some advice on this also;-)

What keeps me going is my own personal past. In high school and shortly after when I began working at the bank as a teller, I was like "verbally abused" by people in such a way that they would say "YOU can't wear THAT Clarissa", "you have a fat ass", and people would snort and "oink" at me when I walked past... stuff like that. I was so down and depressed that I couldn't take it anymore. Then, when I was 20, I just began working out with Taebo and cut my diet down to healthier foods, not balogna sandwiches! Sure, I feel at times I am a little obsessed w/ exercise, but it is my LIFE now. Has been for 8 years. I do 6 days a week of working out, but never less than 5 for sure. I think it just depends on what motivates YOU. My ten year reunion is in 2 weeks from now. What is keeping me on track is going back and saying 'look at me now', and I am a personal trainer too, so HA! No, I am not arrogant, although it may look that way. I just want to help people like me feel better about themselves. So, to answer your question, you have to look at what it is that made YOU begin to workout in the first place...also, you want to be healthy and live longer right??!! Clarissa :)

Wow, Clarissa, so sorry you had to go through that. People can be so horrible sometimes. But congrats on your success!

Michelle - sorry I can't offer any advice since I have the same problem! Except I usually quit before losing the weight! :p

I can only speak from experience. When I was younger I was like you. I would workout for a while and then stop without losing a pound. At age 37, my twin sister starting doing Taebo. I started to do it with her (because I didn't want to be the big twin) and we just got hooked. Then it was all about losing weight and the number on the scale. Now almost 9 years later I'm still working out harder than ever. I think now it's more about being healthy and not the number on the scale. I see my parents (at ages 84 and 73) and I don't want to be like them. My mom has had a weight problem as long as I've known her and it's at the point where she has to watch her sugar and cholesterol, etc. I'm so glad that I did it when I wanted to not when I HAVE to. I want to enjoy my retirement years and be active and fit. I don't want to waste my time popping pills and going to the doctor.

I do think it's a very individual decision. You need to find your motivation. Everyone is different and as you can see your motivation will change as you change.

HTH. Good Luck!!

I guess its just a habit. Your body was designed to move, I try and think like an athlete, you know what I mean? Plus, now that I am 41, its about keeping everything off the ground}( plus, keeping healthy. I do not have the luxury of NOT working out like I did in my 20's. Its an old friend, something that I do like brushing my teeth.:7

I have weeks or whatever that its harder to fit it in, but I still try and take walks, or stretch, any movement is better than none at all. Its something one must do for the rest of your life, so on those days you simply cannot, there is always tomorrow right? I have a bodybuilding background, so I think that has kept me motivated too. I do not lift like a bodybuilder anymore per say, but I kept the discipline to some extent.

Now, if my eating was as stellar as my workouts!:9 But I am working on that. Good luck to you.:)

Goodness ! People can be SUCH A-HOLES !! What an awful thing to do.

I think it is human nature to rollercoaster like we do with working out. We are human, we have lives to lead...you are part of the majority !!

Clarissa,

I think if you had all that trouble with your weight and endured that ridicule and NOW you're a personal trainer, you deserve to be a bit arrogant! Especially to the ones that made fun of you! How mean!

You go girl!
:)

Thanks! Sure can't wait to wear my size small Victoria's Secret lipstick red strapless dress to my reunion! Yeah baby. Two kids and all!
Hahaha! Clarissa
