Need help with clean eating

Hey all,

I would really like to drop 5 vanity pounds and I know the ONLY way to do it at this point is to eat cleaner. Can anyone give me a few suggestions on ideas of things to eat that are good but clean. For breakfast I typically eat cereal (like honey nut cheerios), which I know is NOT good. Do you have any other ideas for breakfast. Things that would satisfy that carb craving??

I know I eat too much sugar, but I have completely stopped drinking any sugary drinks and cut my dessert consumption down to only once or twice a week.

Any ideas would be helpful... thanks!!

yeah- if you stop the extra sugar you'll lose the 5 pounds. my husband lost a bunch this way. I like total rasin bran mixed with a little all bran - that way you get more fiber. I know there is sugar in total but this way it's not such a boring meal- oh and add flax seed to it. let me know if it helps- I too have to lose a couple- I'm doing this and lost 2 pounds

Hi,

I ususally use fresh or frozen (I actually love strawberries and blueberries thawed!) berries and fruit for a natural sweetener with bran flakes and/or yogurt (which is what I usually have for breakfast). For even more of a treat, I use silken tofu (great sorce of protein too, so it usually satisfies cravings pretty well) mixed with berries (I love them thawed here too...;)) and/or fruits with a dash of sweetener. (I know artificial sweeteners aren't really "clean eating", but I have a sweet tooth too, and I figure in moderation every now and then...). Sometimes I throw in a teaspoon of coco to make it chocolate flavoured. Another natural low-cal sweet I like is frozen bananas (I know, I have that thing about frozen food...;))); let them thaw a little, and it's like ice-cream.

I like oatmeal for breakfast. I put different fruit in it and a T of flaxseed and some vanilla protein powder, it stays with me a long time and I don't get hungry. Also try adding more fresh fruit during the day...:)...Carole

I know what you mean--I definitely have a sweet tooth! I'm now completely addicted to apples! I now crave them like I used to crave chocolate and ice cream! Try some of these for breakfast:
-sliced apple and a ff/sf yogurt with a sprinkle of total protein or protein powder added to it. I dip the apple slices in the yogurt--yummy!
-sliced apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter (I actually saw Cathe recommend this to someone the other day for a snack. It happens to be one of my favorites as well!)

I also like frozen fruit. I always keep seedless green grapes in the freezer. If you let them thaw just a little--they're wonderful! (especially if you dip them in yogurt or peanut butter)

Oh wow! I actually never thought of frozen fruit. It sounds like a great option for me - grab it out of the freezer and then by the time I'm in the office they should be thawed!
Do you guys buy the fruit already frozen, or just throw fresh fruit in the freezer. I always buy fruit but it's always too much and they wilt away. I never even thought of putting them in the freezer (unless they are covered with melted milk chocolate, of course! hehe! :9 )

If you focus upon making each meal choice a niutritionally dense one, with the foods as natural as possible (i.e. they were grown or killed), then this will keep you away from the sugary, and over-processed fatty and starch foods that give us the extra 5 pounds.

I never eat packaged cereal, but my kids do and my husband could not exist without it. He eats Quaker Toasted Oatmeal with almonds and nut clusters,it's supposed to be heart healthy. Me? I prefer a soft boiled egg with buttererd wholemeal bread. I couldn't face a bowl of over-processed sugary cereal first thing.

Sometimes I have several pieces of fruit and an organic yoghurt, sweetened with honey. This should satify a carb craving too.

But if you follow the general principle outlined above, you may lose those 5 pounds and be healthier for it.

Oh I love frozen fruit! It's a staple on hot summer days. Grapes are so good. I freeze them on a plate so they don't get all stuck together, then roll them into a freezer bag. I also like to freeze orange and grapefruit slices. Frozen fruit is sorbet in the original package :D

ok I'll try to remember that. Grown or Killed!!!! That sounds good. What about vegetables? Any good ideas that incorporate veggies since fruit has a lot of sugar too?

Thanks,
Kristie

My opinion is you shouldn't worry about the fruit. It is healthy, even though it is sweet. If you make the changes discussed earlier, that should accomplish what you want. I would make sure you eat protein at every meal...the yogurt or tofu or eggs or whatever.

I add veggies to my 4 egg white/1 whole egg omelet some mornings.
If you still want to add more veggies...or snack on baby carrots.

I like to remove the core out of an apple (I like fiji), place some raisins in the middle, sprinkle some cinnamon and microwave it for about 1 minute (depends how you like it) and top it with plain fat free yogurt. I love it!

ok, i'm also addicted to peanut butter!! that last post reminded me of my favorite sandwich! take a slice of whole grain wheat bread and spread it with a tablespoon of peanut butter. fold it in half and cram as many raw baby carrots into it as you can fit--a peanut butter and carrot sandwich! everybody at work makes fun of me when i eat one b/c it looks really funny--like little orange fingers sticking out of my bread! but i love it b/c of the contrast of the crunchy sweet carrots w/the creamy pb!
