Natural Peanbut Butter

I've found that often something "with salt" is too salty (ie: mixed nuts, roasted soy beans",soup), but "no salt added" is too bland. I've dealt with this by mixing salted and salt free (soynuts), or by adding some miso to the unsalted stuff (soup).

Miso and tahini tastes good together (IMO), I think a little bit of miso mixes with a bit of unsalted pb would be good too. (Miso is a paste made from soybeans, and sometimes other grains or chick peas. It has acidophilus in like yogurt, and tastes very salty, even though it has less sodim than it tastes like).

>I'm confused by the term "natural peanut butter". I mean,
>there's unnatural peanut butter? I see can the low-fat ones
>having unnatural ingredients, but why would regular PB be
>anything but natural?

nancy... natural peanut butter is simply peanuts.. usually with salt added.. that's it.. nothing more.. nothing else added!

the non-natural is your skippy's and jif's that add sugar and other cr*p to them... making them not a healthy choice... peanuts... actually most all nuts.. are HEALTY fat.. so natural peanut butter.. even though it is a fat.. is actually good for you! you do need some fat in your diet.. AND.. it helps you feel/stay full!

next time you are in a store (or if you have some in your cupboard) check the ingredients.. also.. the low fat ones.. compare the ingredients of those to the non low fat ones.. they usually add sugar or something to make up for the fat take out... so low fat (as in mayonaiise or even natural PB) isn't always the best choice when you are trying to eat healthy!

What they actually do to make "unhealthy" peanut butter, they add partially hydrogenated soybean oil or also call "Trans Fats" which is the worse fat you can eat, it is really bad for you. These fats make it possible that the peanuts and the oil stay combined, like Jiffy etc. and you are able to keep it in your cabinet. If you buy natural peanut butter all the fat is on top of the jar and you have to stir the peanut butter to combine it. You have to store the peanut butter in the fridge to prevent the peanuts and the oil from seperating.
That's why peanut butter like Jiffy etc. is not really good for you.
Anytime you see "partially hydrogenated soybean oil" on an ingredient label, you know that it has Trans Fats in it. Read some labels and you will see how many products acutally have trans fats in them, it's kinda scary. I think that 2006, all food companies are required to list the grams of trans fats under the nutrition facts.
2g a day is ok, but the average American consumes between 20-30g a day.

Hope that helps

That's quite interesting! I never knew that! I learn something new everyday on this board! :)

Have a great work out!

Kristine,
My comment was dumb. I guess I've been using natural PB for so long I actually forgot about the kind I used to eat as a kid, that never separated and that was filled with corn syrup. Yuck.

you have to check ALL labels carefully (not just PB) cuz a TON of stuff has trans fats in it.... i've had to exclude a LOT of stuff i used to eat.. also.. be careful of packages markes "no trans fats" (i.e. microwave popcorn) cuz when you read the label.. there's the hydrogentated/partially hydrongenated poison! GRRRRRRRRRR
