Myoplex and Muscle Milk

wonderwoman

I was watching the 10 o'clock news last night on channel 5 last and they had a segment on these 2 particular protein drinks. Research shows the levels of metals in these drinks were too high. Muscle milk vanilla flavor had levels of lead in it.

I know many people including myself drink at least one a day after a work out.
Just thoght I 'd put it out there.
You cant eat anything these days. Man has his hand in EVERYTHING!!!!!

YIKES!

Thank goodness I couldn't get past the smell of Myoplex....totally grossed me out. I bought a large box of Muscle Milk and threw it out because I couldn't stand the taste.

You're welcome:)

I was shocked when I heard about this. I did not see the protein shake brand I use in the group they tested but now wonder if mine has any metals in it. I usually have one after strength training (3x/week) and only one scoop since I can't handle more than 25 grams of protein without getting bloated & gassy. But even at those levels, if there are metals present, it is a concern since it noted they can stay in your system for some time.

Uh oh I saw Gold Standard in there. I love that stuff! Granted, I only take 1 scoop 3x a week but now I have to do some research....

Very interesting. I think, with all things, one must weigh the pros and cons. I use Gold Standard whey protein and will continue to do so. I will have one a day, sometimes 2 on my weight lifting days. I accept the risk...daggone...living is a risk! I'd rather use my protein drinks, then drink, smoke or do drugs! Interesting....

Meliffy18,
I too use Gold Standard. Where did you see it on the list? which article? I just had some this morning but I only use 1/2 a scoop because I make mine with lowfat milk with frozen fruit. I have been drinking it about 3/4 times a week this time around because I'm 7 1/2 months pregnant but I normally had 1 scoop a day rigth after my workouts.
I have a doctors appt today so I will be asking her about this but I asked her when I first learned that I was pregnant and she said yes that I could continue to drink my protein shakes! Oh great!!!!! Something else to worry about.

Consumer Reports

My issue of Consumer Reports arrived yesterday, and I was unhappy to see that several of the products that I use were among those that were tested and failed!

It's not the expense that bothers me, but the heavy metals seem like an inexcusable lapse in quality control. Protein shakes are convenient when you don't have time to cook (or don't have the appetite for the alternatives). I hope this is a wake-up call for the manufacturers!

Renee, well said! I use Whey-To-Go almost every day (1 scoop in my morning breakfast shake) and I really like how it has helped my body lean out/muscle definition. I would hate to give it up! Another article even questioned if we *need* protein powder at all or if it is just a marketing gimic. Like you, I rarely drink, don't do drugs, watch my sugars, workout...protein powder seems the lesser of evils. Until the next report comes out. ;)

They didn't mention it outright but it was panned over in the clip that Ninjamom posted. I don't know if they tested it and what they found. I'm curious to see what they found on it and whether it tested high for arsenic or any other harmful metal. Keep us posted on what your doc says!

Everything we eat today poses some sort of risk IMO. Even things that are "controlled" by the FDA eventually come out with some scary finding (if it's even published at all). I think as long as you eat a relatively clean diet and take these in moderation you should be ok, but I'm not a doctor or nutritionist :(

I read some of the article and the top 3 metals that were found were lead, arsenic, and cromdine (cant remember the correct spelling) but it says that if you take 3 or more servings a day it can be harmful. I guess for the fitness pros who can drink so many a day have something to worry about.
