My Stamina

Winter

Cathlete
Hi Cathe,

I am starting to get back to more consistent work outs after a 6 months absense for a broken foot. My Stamina is hurting. I have done a few of your older workouts (mega step blast) and have made it through them. The problem is my stamina is lacking - rarely can I make it through a full work out.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I build my stamina back up.

I try to do aerobics in the morning and walk 30 minutes at noon. The only thing I can think to do it to just keep trying to get through the work out each day.

Before I do step in the morning I have either fruit, yogurt or bread with PB and coffee. Maybe not the right kind of fuel for 6 am exercise?

Thanks,
Winter

Hi Winter! Take your time and let your body adjust. Don't rush into things or you will run the risk of unecessary injuries. Not only does your heart muscle need to gain strength gradually but your foot needs to regain its strength and coordination. All the muscles, bones, ligaments, and surrounding tissue in your foot, need to ease in slowly and reconnect with the movement patterns they once did so effortlessly.

I suggest just doing 4 cardio workouts a week. During each of those workouts, only do what you can. Try to add a minute or two every couple of workouts. Eventually you will be conditioned enough to pick up where you left off before your injury.

If you are feeling extra energetic on a particular day, by all means do one of those 30 minute walks.

In addition to your cardio, you should also ease into strength training a couple of times a week too.

Good Luck!
