I got a pair of Rollerblades yesterday that I ordered online. I walk the dogs every morning at 4:30, but wanted to get them a more intense "workout", and since I hate running and don't want to put the impact on my knees, I decided to get skates. I also ordered the pads and wrist things, but they didn't come yet.
I hadn't actually been on a pair of inline skates in about 14 years, though I've been on rollerskates a few times. I wasn't really too worried about it because I'm pretty decent on roller skates.
This morning comes around and I put the skates on, get the dogs on their leashes and we're off. The dogs were loving it, and I was getting the hang of it again. Then we stopped so the dogs could go to the bathroom and I heard this clopping noise up the road.
I looked and could make out 4 dark figures, which I initially took as 4 teenagers. I figured maybe they were out on thier skates playing hockey....at 4:45 a.m....in the dark....ok, didn't make sense. My brain doesn't really work too well at that hour.
Then I looked a bit longer, and decided it was a couple deer. Not unusual to see them on the walks. It's happened before. So I started walking the dogs again, figuring the deer would hoof it into the woods as soon as they smelled us.
But as we got closer, I saw they were walking towards us - down the road. That is unusual for deer. And then they came close enough for me to see they were 2 horses! No people with them, just the horses. They stopped. And I stopped. And we looked at each other, and I said, "hey - what are YOU doing here?" And they said, "nothing, just out for a stroll..." (ok - that part is made up, but if it was a children's story, I'd leave it in)
So then I thought, "hmmmm....there are 2 horses right in front of me. I'm on rollerblades for the first time in 14 years, have no safety pads on me, and I'm holding the leashes of 2 dogs. One dog is 85 lbs, and the other is a herder...what should I do?" By the time that thought completed, Cricket was barking and starting to try to go after them. So, I did the only thing I could do....I fell - right on my bad knee.
It was a planned fall, just poorly executed. The horses left without much of an incident, other than a barking corgi and a woman with a slightly skinned knee.
But horses? HORSES for pete's sake! Who'd expect that?
Where can my day go from here? That was so totally cool! I hope they made it home OK. I think they were from the stables about a quarter mile up around the bend.
OH - the dogs LOVED the skating/running thing! Duke (the 10 year old big boy) had a huge grin on his face that usually isn't there after just the regular walk. Cricket...well, she could use some more running. She's just got too much energy.
