My dog is a genious! is yours?

Ok, so I might be a bit biased on this one... but I truly think my furbaby is the smartest dog in the universe! DH and I were discussing this issue last night... that she is smart enough to know WHEN it is straight up 7pm and her Ball Hour play time, where either DH or I throw her favorite ball for a rousing game of fetch! Day in and day out, she will sit and stare at the ball we put on the kitchen island at 7 on the dot... You say "play ball?" and she lights up like a live spark!

We give her a Kong with a treat in it every night after she "puts mama to bed" and if by 9pm I'm NOT in bed she is pretty much sitting in front of me looking at me like "are you NOT sleepy yet?" I get the hint...

this morning she apparently was unsuccessful in getting out the entire treat from the Kong... now mind you, her knick-name is "Licky Lou" so she has full use of that body part! yet, she can't seem to get this one out in full... So, right now she is flipping the Kong into the air, dropping it on the floor in hopes to "jog" the morsel loose somehow... just a few minutes ago she went up the stairs and threw it down the stairs... after a few more drops she is Victorious! which is good news because I was getting tired of the constant plunk on the floor! :)

Apparently I am easily entertained and think that my Missy Lou (Avatar soccer player) is the smartest dog in the world!

What amazing feats have your pets exhibited?
 
Wow, that's so cool that your dog can tell time!! The only thing my dog does is "clap". He stands up on his hind legs and "claps" his front paws together. I've never seen any other dogs do this, and we didn't teach it to him, but it's really cute. Other than that, my dogs are kinda dumb:(!!!
 
I have caught my two miniature schnauzers in the middle of several ingenious plots. Once, I went into the kitchen and discovered one dog (Greta) on top of the table, dropping leftover dinner rolls onto the floor where the other dog (Afreet) was eating them. Upon discovery, Greta leapt off the table with a roll in her mouth and both dogs ran away. I have no idea how Greta got onto the table. It seems physically impossible.

They also excel at stealing stuffed animals. I bought a stuffed T-Rex for my nephew for Christmas this year, and as soon as she saw it, Greta had to have it. I put it high up on a bookshelf, to await wrapping and delivery. More than a week later, I was vacuuming and I shoved a chair next to the bookshelf, turned my back for a split second, and, of course, as soon as I turned back, I saw Greta, balanced on the chair, triumphantly seizing the T-Rex! She's very focused.:rolleyes:

My boy can relax like no one I know. He's got it down to a perfect science

My girl can toss a toy over the kitchen table, leap across the length of our couch, open doors, and sniff out any new toy in the house. Hiding presents at Christmas time is a super challenge with my smart little girl

Wow...ours aren't quite there. Our 2yo lab mix stalks the older one in the backyard when he's not looking and then tackles him. The 3yo border collie/burnese mountain dog mix will lay down in front of us when we're carrying food, hoping we trip & drop it so he can eat the food. Urban survival? LOL

we have a great dane, mufasa, and he is quite possibly the worlds dumbest dog!:p
but he loves us and we love him!

i feel very safe w/ him patrolling the yard while the girls are outside. even tho he would just love on whoever walked up i know he looks very intimidating!

our other dane was very smart. mufasa.....not so much.:eek:

LOL!! Kate... a Dane was what DH really wanted and we had even put a deposit on a Mantle Dane a few years back but could not get it approved from our Property Manager :(... so we got the Aussie instead... we have been to a few dog parks here in town and there are a couple Herliquins that are there pretty frequently and they are just the sweetest when you get over their size! Their owners say they just don't realize it, but would LOVE to be lap dogs!

Cynthia: my sister has a boxer girl too! she is the best! she has the brindle coloring and quite a character too! I was reading some dog training books about starting puppies on fetching "specific" items and ML has a few that she will get on command, one being "kitty" a stuffed animal that has thing arms, legs and tail.. .she will grab by the tail and whack it around like she is tearing it apart! they are hard to find and her last kitty ended up being "BOB" (from the really bad joke about what you call a man with no arms or legs... sorry) but we never got to the hiding items around the house!

Jill: LOL at your pups sitting at your feet... ML does this too... even when I send her to lay down, she is always at least FACING the direction of where the crumbs might fall and keeps a keen eye open (sometimes even just one!) lol!

LIsa: LOL at your schnauzers! Must be the German in them! My mom had one when I was a kid, and she was a terror and very sneaky! Must have been the spring loaded legs they have, unless someone left a chair pulled out just enough to allow them to sneak up there :) too funny about picking the rolls...

How adorable! Another male that looks like he knows how to relax.

My vet tries to explain to me that dogs do not need all the conveniences that we need. HA! He really needs to spend a day with my two. My boy has discovered the comforts of my heated blanket. I'm now competing for it every single night:eek:

I trained my first Aussie, Tucker, in search and rescue and he was such a smart guy. I remember on a practice search one time, we had a person hiding in a tree on the bank of a stream (it's a very advanced problem as dogs and humans rarely look UP and the wind currents by a stream bank are very confusing). He caught scent of the person, but was confused. So he started moving forward and backwards, and I could see him thinking it through - "if the scent is here, and not here, but it's over here, the person has to be...." and I'll be darned if he didn't stop and turn his head and catch the eye of the person hiding. He then ran up to her and "found" her.

Here's his puppy school graduation pic. I call it Ambassador Tucker of the Canine Brigade as he looks so official!

Jimmy is smart, too - he can also tell time. He pokes me when it's dinner time (and is never more than 5 minutes off). He also just knows when I have a bad day and will "Hug" me - put his paws on my shoulders and lean in to me. It's not a dominance thing - it's purely love. He's a sweetheart of a dog. Very loving.
 
My Wire Fox Terrier "Kelsey" and one of her past "brothers" can put the rings on the Fisher Price baby Rock-A-Stack toy!
 
So I don't know if any of you have heard of this, but not only does my little chihuahua tell time, she KNOWS about 30 minutes to an hour in advance when my mom or dad is coming home. It doesn't matter if it's a routine time or a totally random outing. My old dog used to do this, as well. Bimba now sits at the door (well, on the top of the couch facing the door) and just waits when she's knows they're coming home. She won't eat, move, and is barely enticed by treats. She is so intense about it.


Routines are her thing. For example, when my dad works graveyard shifts, she KNOWS when it's time for him to get up (a quarter to 3:00) and runs up the stairs barking like mad at his door (until he yells at her, of course :)). She sleeps in until 7 am on the dot when she knows that my mom normally would get up and makes noise until she can be let out to wake everybody up. On top of that, my mom had been very sick most of the summer, so she would go to bed around 7:00 (either because my dad came home at that time on day shifts or she was done with the kitchen when he left for night shifts). So even now, she has to let us know around 7 that it's time to go to bed. If we're not ready, she makes sure we make her ready for bed (heated pad, a particular blanket in her big kennel). She'll stand there and bark at us until we figure it out.

For the most part, this dog isn't very smart, but this sense of time and routine is totally her thing. She just now spent 20 minutes trying to tell me to bring her heating pads downstairs so she could sit in the kitchen. I didn't get it. She would stand there and look at me, bark, run to her kennel, run downstairs, run back to me, bark, etc. My mom had to figure it out. She knows what she wants and doesn't quit. I always thought she was a dummy, but she's just more like a cat than a dog. She only wants what she wants.
 
Missy Lou certainly ranks high on the Smartest list but probably takes at least spot #2 on the Funniest Dog list. I'm laughing just reading about her.

In a house with 5 cats (and 3 others who spend a lot of time in my downstairs kitchen) all of whom I adore (though Tangee's seems to live to test me), I often wonder how different things would be if I'd had two cats and a dog. Everyone always thinks people who have cats don't feel a kinship with dogs but I love 'em all and adore the funny stories I read here. In this neighborhood, though, it's stray cats that really need homes or my fur-family would have been more balanced.

But keep the stories coming because I LOVE them.
