My dog ate a rabbit...

But he swears it was in self-defense! (apologies to Eric Clapton!) Last night we asked DD to let our out lovely greyhound (temporarily the avatar) one more time for his duties and soon heard her screaming: " Leave it, leave it" and then "Tank got a rabbit"! so I ran downstairs as fast as I could (having just had surgery, which is another post...not much else to do today!). And sure enough Tank had this bunny hanging from his mouth. Like a good dog, he dropped it when we told him to, but when we then told him to come in, he picked it up like a trophy, and was so proud of himself! DD and I slammed the door and made DH come down to get the dog in and clean him off! Well for the next couple of hours the dog whined and wimmpered and was just pretty agitated knowing that bunny (poor thing) was still out there. My DD said he had chased the bunny around his pen like he was demon-possessed. there is never a dull moment when DD19 is home!!!

BTW how do I add the emoticons to the message? Still haven´t figured that out!

My male boxer brings in box turtles from our yard. I would like to think he wants to keep them as a pet:eek:, but the reality is he wants to eat them! He killed one if you can believe it. It was pretty gross with a cracked shell.
My boy has a strong prey drive for little critters. Not other dogs though. The verdict isn't in on cats though:(

Once we had a little shrew in our back porch, hiding behind a cabinet. At one point it stuck its head out and hissed and my 80 lb boxer-lab jumped about 3 ft backwards. I guess he got his courage up because when it tried to make a break for it, doggie scooped it up in his mouth, looked utterly baffled for a moment, then dropped it. I guess it didn't taste like his stuffed squirrel toys.

I'm not sure my dog understands that small animals don't enjoy being mauled. We buy his squirrels in bulk from petsmart (he disembowels them in about two days) and he tears them apart but still snuggles with them when he sleeps. When he gets worked up about the squirrels outside, I think he wants them to come home with him, be his chew toy, and then be his cuddle buddy. Why wouldn't they want to? Oh, that little puppy mind.

There's a little box at the bottom of the page that says "Posting Rules" Click on "Smilies". :)

Ugh. My dog and I have a long history of Catch and Rescue. He corners or catches something. I try to rescue it.

I'm proud to say that in 5 years, he's only managed to kill one animal. I intervened in time with all the others. Every time I do, I wonder if the frightened animal is going to turn on me. My husband watches from the patio, hoping to see the comical visual of me running back and forth in the yard, an opossum on my head, the dog chasing me.

When I was younger and lived at home my dog caught a rabbit w/out us knowing, and ate it. Mom was NOT happy when it ended up on the living room rug later in the evening. He used to catch birds flying by as well. The occasional squirrel, and once an opossum. He also got himself skunked once. We could never break him of that. Most of the time, he didn't eat them, though. If we were hunters, he would've made a good hunting dog. He was some kind of hound dog mix.

I have an Italian Greyhound.

He loves to chase the squirrels in our backyard. He barks at them and they run up and down the tree. Sometimes I think they are playing with him. He is very fast yet he has never caught one.

Oh LaDonna,
Your dog's face is so darn cute! How many times a day do you kiss that cute mug?!

LOL Thanks but it's more like how often does he kiss us. He is the most lovable animal I have ever had. He has never met a stranger he didn't love.:p

My mixed breed has pulled baby bunnies out of a hole, with me yelling at her to drop them, swallowed a baby bird whole, and just a few weeks ago, somehow managed to get a squirrel... which she was guarding to prevent our pom from getting it!! She's definitely a critterer!
