My Chiropractor Saved Me!!!

Howdy, gang!

Do any of you know what it means to "torque" your knee? Well, without getting all scientific on ya, I'll just say that it means that the bones sort of "pop" out of place.

So, a little over two weeks ago, I was doing Rhythmic Step, and hubby was trying to talk to me (doesn't he know not to do that???), and I sort of stepped down wrong. I felt pain in my ankle so I stopped working out. Within five minutes, my ankle was so sore that I couldn't put any weight on it. But it wasn't swollen or bruised or anything. It felt like the bones of my ankle sort of "crossed" or something.

Well, amazingly enough, within two hours the pain was gone and I was able to walk around with very little discomfort in my ankle. For a couple of days, though, I just felt weird aches up and down my leg and into the sole of my foot. Then the pain started in my knee. It felt like pressure or something. It would come and go, just like the aches throughout my leg and foot. I tried working out, but the longer I worked out, the worse my knee felt. So, I had to stop. For over two weeks, I've had these intermittent leg cramps and aches, and my knee has been too sore to exercise.

I went to my chiro twice last week and he adjusted me a couple of times, and it felt better for a while, but got worse again. This weekend, the pain in my knee got worse, so I went back to my chiro today. My regular doctor was off, but the owner of the clinic was available. He's older and has seen a lot more than my regular doctor - and he's adjusted me on few occasions. I told him everything, and he said, "You've torqued your knee." A few pops and twists later, and I was all fixed up...a little sore under the circumstances, but fixed up nonetheless. He actually adjusted my ankle (I DID have a bone out in my ankle, and it popped loudly back in place), then worked up and adjusted my knee, then my lower back. He finished with my neck.

AAAAAHHHHHH!

If any of you have pains in your feet, knees, legs, or back, and you don't have a good chiropractor, you need to get one!! Both of mine are lifesavers when it comes to my exercising.

Catwoman...I am a true believer in Chiropractic care. I always get my ankles adjusted after long trail runs...:)...For as long as I remember my knees have gotten locked up on occasion and I move them a particular way and hear a pop and they are always better. (like cracking your knuckles). I am a distance runner and the only knee pain I have ever had was from my Illiotibial band. Very happy your knee is better...:)...carole

Catwoman, I'm so glad you got fixed!! :p I love how bodies work- we are amazing creatures, and thank goodness some people have figured some of it out!!!

I'd love to be more enthusiastic, but I got my insurance statement today and it says I owe my chiro over $2,000 for visits just in September and October!!! Yikes!!! I'm sure it's wrong, and I've paid a lot of it at the time of the visit and I know they're being kind enough to give me a discount since I'm paying for law school, but I'm a little grumpy with the subject right now!!

I do think I'll tell DH your story, just to make him shudder and to remind him why I get short with him when I'm working out!! LOL

I've always been skeptical about chiropractors. My assistant goes to a couple of them ALL THE TIME. I swear she has 2 appointments a week. She has so many things wrong with her and I often wonder if the chiropractors were so good for her, why does she keep getting "out of alignment" and have to keep going back so frequently? I just wonder if they are really good for you? Maybe my skepticism is from from years of people telling kids not to crack their knuckles because it will make them big and mess them up. Why would any other bones be any different? And why is the medical insurance industry so fickle about covering chiropractors if they are supposed to help you?

But then Carole - you piqued my interest because I trashed my ankles when I did my marathon (well, the training really) and it does flare up at times from doing step. Hmmm...

I trust Chiro's completely. I go for preventative reasons because of what I do to my body. My first Chiro was a triathlete and I have learned alot from him. Then my nephew went to school for Chiropractic and he works with my 1st Chiro. When my ankles feel sore after a trail run because of the bending and sometimes tripping, my nephew adjusts them and they feel instantly better. I have gone for the last 7 years on a regular basis. I have no complaints. This can be a controversial subject here, but I sometime feel Doctors overmedicate people with injuries, so I would rather try a GOOD Chiro first...these are just my own feelings....:)...Carole

dogs2birds:

As with everything, there are good chiros and there are some who aren't so good. I've been to a few of both in my life, but most have been good. The ones I've got now are incredible! You really have to do a little searching and legwork when looking for a good chiro, as with anything.

The medical insurance agency has been slow to accept chiropractic because chiropractors don't prescribe medicine. Chiros tend to follow a more holistic approach to healing the body, and don't like using "medication" and/or surgery for every little ache or pain. They were once considered too "new age" for the medical industry to accept them. This is changing, though, and my last 3 or 4 insurance carriers paid for chiropractic care.

Also, chiropractic care is not something that "fixes" you permanently. Chiropractic is an ongoing type of care. Some people need more adjusting than others, especially if they're active, have poor muscle strength, have curves in their spine, practice poor posture...sounds like just about everybody I know. Myself: I have a curve in my spine, and 3 broken vertebrae in my lower back (you can see the bone chips on my x-rays). I've also somehow lost the curve in my neck. Regular adjustments keep my curvature in check, my broken vertebrae stabilized, and prevent the bones in my neck from "fusing" together to develop arthritis. The curvature in my spine (as slight as it is) had also caused one leg to be a tiny bit longer than the other. As a result, I had tons of problems with my legs and my knees, to the point of almost not being able to go up or down a flight of stairs without excruciating pain. Chiropractic fixed all that for me.

You don't have to be a believer when the proof is in the pudding. In other words, if it works, it works. Can't argue with that. ;-)

Hey, Catwoman, my neck is all straight too!! :D

My first time, she asked me if I had been in a car accident with whiplash or anything... I said "no" and then a few days later realized maybe my having played rugby might have contributed... LOL

I second that! I went yesterday for a regular adjustment but it just so happened that I had a migraine for a day and a half. 15 minutes later and the headache had eased up and I felt remarkably better. I want to marry my chiro's hands (his wife can have the rest of him!!) :)

Very interesting. Maybe the next time I have a migraine that won't quit, I should see a chiropractor instead of my neurologist!

Thanks for all of your input. I'm a little more open to the thought of chiropractors now than I was yesterday.
