My Chicken Pearl is Really Sick :(

Hey Sparrow,
How's Pearl doing today? I hope she's feeling better!!

For those who haven't seen her, here's a picture of Sparrow's precious Pearl...:D

THANK YOU LADIES!!! And thanks, Allison, you are very sweet. :) Pearl is no better today:( But on the plus side, she is no worse. We have put her on a dewormer now, just in case, per the vet, and continue to take a wait and see attitude. We're also giving her Gatorade, which she loves, and a special mash.

I wonder if she has not been feeling well for a while though. She showed no outward signs until this week but last week I noticed one of my newer chickens, Betsy, was making her move to push Pearl off the top of the pecking order. I wonder if the other birds knew she wasn't feeling well?

Sparrow - She probably has not been feeling well for a while. Animals are VERY good at pretending to feel fine. It's all part of survival and not appearing weak. Once they do start to look sick, it usually turns out that they've been progressing that way for some time, but are now sick enough for it to show. Keep us updated on her!

Sparrow:
Sending lots of healing vibes Pearl's way.

Hope the vet can figure out what the problem is.

Any possibility that she got into some odd weed that is poisonous to chickens? (That would be my first thought).

I see you did get more chickens. :) How does Pearl like them (aside from being nudged out of the top of the pecking order?).

UPDATE!! Pearl is going to be ok! <happy dance>

Here's what happened. Because for the last two weeks she hasn't gotten any better - or any worse - a chicken expert I know put forth the theory that it was just a really hard molt (when chickens lose old and grow new feathers) and not an illness. So at his suggestion we put her on infant vitamins and upped her protein levels considerably. Yesterday we took her out to get some air - we've had to keep her separated from the flock - and she was back to her old self! She didn't stagger or fall over at all, and today it's the same. She's been running around the yard all day, wreaking havoc on bugs and worms. :D

Thanks to all who sent good wishes. It meant a lot to me. :)

Yay Sparrow..excellent news :) I'm so glad that Pearl is feeling better and is back to her old self again.

Go Pearl!! Yeah little chicky :). I had been wondering and thinking of you and Pearl- glad it is such super happy news!!!

Sparrow, I have 20-some chickens and two turkeys myself, so I was curious about the remedy -- we had one acting like Pearl once -- actually, I think we had two -- one made it, the other did not. At any rate, are the infant vitamins you used just over the counter stuff?

thanks,
-Beth

OHHHHH! I'm so pleased she is going to be OK. Pearl is a champ. Give her a hug for me and tell her to eat all the bugs and worms she likes.

YEAH!

Aw. I'm so glad. We do become attached to our animal babies, don't we?
