My cats' new toy...

So, I ordered a super nice cat tree and it just arrived today. It's super sturdy, 4-tiered, has a little cave, a cat's dream...or not. They are completely terrified of it and won't go near it! Gaspard will creep up until he can see it, stare at it for a few seconds in terror, then scamper off. Delilah can't even bear to do that.

I sure hope they like it soon!

Oh I think they will come to love it once they figure out what it is and that it is theirs. I can just see them circling and exploring at night when no one is around. My cats absolutely love theirs but they had a completely different reaction when it arrived. They rode it into the house and up the stairs while we all struggled to carry it. Good luck and just give them time. Maybe sprinkle some catnip on it. I also have lots of toys hanging off it to swat at and play with.

Hi Amy!
That is too cute!! You would think they'd be all over it, right?? When my hubby and I first got our kitties a "kitty condo", it took them a little while until they were comfortable with it. Don't worry, I'm sure in no time they will be all over it!! Their curiosity will get the best of them!! :p

I swear, cats are sometimes like kids! You buy them expensive toys that they give a cold shoulder to, but give them a big cardboard box, and they'll play with it for hours! (my cats LOVE boxes!!)

I bet they'll love it soon, though!

Some of my cats love the cat trees and others just ignore them. They also go through phases. Jaffa jumped on it the second we got it in the house but it took a while for the others to show any interest in it. For a while Slinky and Jaffa were always competing for the top spot on the higher one but once Slinky discovered the couch the cat tree became Jaffa's own. Puddle had a brief stint when she would sleep on it and I don't think I've ever seen Squirt anywhere near either one of them. Jaffa jumped on it the second we got it in the house but it took a while for the others to show any interest in it. But I have had my fair share of cat beds/toys/treats that did not go over well at all. You never know what the little fellows are going to like.

I have three cat trees in my house, but one of them is kind of lame, and I'm thinking of replacing it with a fancier, cooler one soon (and donating the lame one to the shelter).

I'd recommend both that you sprinkle some catnip around it (as someone already suggested) and also go over and 'play' with it yourself. Ooh and ahhh over it. "scratch" the fabric of it, as if you are using it as a scratching post. Play with a 'mousie' (that's a catnip mouse in my lingo,;)) around it. You get the idea.

Aww that reminded me of my kitty. She had a big time box fetish. No matter what size box she would get into it or partly into it depending on the size of the box. Even a little jewlery box she would put her one paw in it. Miss that silly little freak.

That reminds me of my dear departed Scooter. He'd love to *try* to fit in shoe boxes, but his front end would be hanging out (as well as some tummy over the sides at times!) and he'd still look at me as if to say "looks good, doesn't it?" LOL!

Ah yes the fatty flow over. I remember it well.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! And yes, these cats sure do love a good box. A shoebox from my husband who wears big shoes has been a big hit. It seems like they really want something to climb so I'm hoping they'll start climbing their tree instead of curtains!

Gaspard has come around and wants to play on it, but only with me. Delilah still can't handle it and won't come in the room where it is! I carry her toward the room and her little body gets so tense. Poor thing! I'll try the catnip idea--actually I have a catnip spray that is really "good stuff" apparantly!
