my cat decided on...

well, i'm not sure and neither is she. i brought a bowl of dried food out and a bowl of canned. she took a couple bites from the dry then switched to the canned, then back to the dry, then back to the canned, then dry, then canned. after 3 rounds i took her food away.i guess she couldnt stick with one since she likes them both so much.

she will vomit since cant eat much.dry food she gobbles up too fast so ends up eating to much at once.it takes her 4 days to mostly finish a 5oz of canned.i am going to stop giving her dry since i now know that she has no preference.

All she eats in 4 days is 5 oz of canned food? My cats (who are at a normal weight) eat atleast that much each in 1 day.

That is not enough food for the time space. Maybe try a different dry. I found that larger kibble made my cat eat slower and thus no vomiting. The really small kibble came up looking the same as it went. down. I like to leave out dry food and feed wet food 2X a day. Many think that wet food is a better choice and if you decide to go with that she really needs to eat more than you mentioned. How old is your cat? Is she still a kitten? I really think you should check with your vet and find out how much food she should be eating over the course of say one day and go from there.

My vet told me not to switch a cat's food too often with my 6 year old boys. With my previous cat, Adrian, I changed his food so many times he had kidney problems.

4 days to eat 5 oz of food? That is nowhere near enough food for an adult cat.

My cans of cat food say to feed 1 oz per pound of body weight DAILY.

So an 8-lb cat would need about 8 oz of canned cat food per day.

or 2/3 to 1 cup of dry food per day.

Maybe your cat is gobbling the food too fast because she is so hungry???

My 2 cats prefer dry food (I give them Evo brand which is grain free) and I leave two bowls out 24/7.... so they can eat when and how much they want.

They don't overeat. One bowl has Evo Chicken and Turkey, the other has Evo Herring and Salmon.

Once in a while I give them canned food in addition to the dry, but after a couple of days they don't want the canned anymore and go back to their preferred dry food.

I would try leaving a bowl of dry food out 24/7 and after a couple of days of realizing that the food will always be there, perhaps your cat will stop gobbling.

I also would discuss the quantity of food with your vet. Does the vet know how little your cat is eating?

I've had cats all my life. I leave out dry 24/7 and put out a small can of wet in the morning and the evening. Unlike humans, animals don't usually overeat. You can free-feed without worry. I have never understood why humans think it is appropriate to take an animals food away and control in that manner. You will note that there are many flavors of food as well, and just like humans, animals have preferrences. If you pay attention, you will be able to identify what your cat likes and doesn't like. They also, not unlike humans, enjoy a little variety. Would you eat only the same thing every day for your entire life? I had one cat that would not eat fish flavors - she hated them. So I stopped buying them. I had another cat that would eat to fast in the morning. So I would walk into the kitchen and tell him to "slow down," or "enough." They are intelligent beings that learn - he did learn what those words meant and when I said it, he did it. He would walk away, and then come back a little later and finish his breakfast. The vomitting stopped. You have to remember - animals are not machines - they have brains, personalities, feelings, all that. Approach them as you would a small child. If something seems odd, call the doctor. But don't withhold food because you can't figure out what they're thinking.

yes, my cats have 24/7 food too. As a matter of fact, it was asked during my interview with the Humane Society on how I would feed my adopted cats I have now. My boys never overeat and they look, feel, and smell healthy.

I always leave plenty of dry cat food out. My kitty loves the wet but it gave her the runs (poor kitty). You should take your kitty to the vet if she isn't still a kitten. Sometimes they throw up because they have an allergy. I think she should be eating more food than she is. Let us know how it goes.

My cats always get over weight, I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I recently switched them to a lower calorie wet food, which they love so much they eat more of it than the original! I stopped leaving out dry all the time and just put out a half cup over night, and feed them wet food during the day, for the 2 cats I put out 2 cans of food total through out the day. Actually one cat is quite over weight, and one I don't really think he is, but the doctor said he is, I just think he is big boned ;). Neither of them are like those huge fat cats, but they are also much larger than average cats in general. I think they are around 17 pounds and 19/20 pounds

I feel them evo dry and Nutro line of wet food. I just bought a small bag of the evo in reduced calories and they seem to like that fine, so might switch over to that once the regular runs out.

Hate to say it but your cat is starving...

I'm sorry but 5 ounces of food for 4 days is way to little food, that's why the poor thing is eating so fast, she is starving. My kitty is about 6-7 pounds and she eats two 5 ounce can of food every day plus she has dry food 24/7 - in case she wants a snack. Honestly I think you need to feed your kitty more food and leave out some dry food all day.

How are we suppose to know your trying to be funny? If you post something on this forum you are going to get many opinions. If you don't want opinions then don't write a thread about how little you are feeding your cat!!! There is a lot of animal lovers on here that probably don't find it funny!! No one was being mean, we are just trying to help!!!!

Laura - No one was being mean. We were all concerned about your beautiful cat, Josie... who looks almost identical to my precious baby Ella.

We thought you meant that she couldn't eat without vomiting and so she was only eating one 5 ounce can of food in 4 days. We were worried about her.

You NEVER said anything about giving her dry food overnight...

I am so glad to hear that she is healthy and eating enough food. That's a huge relief !!!!

She's a beautiful cat..... I hope you and Josie can decide on the perfect food choice !!! :)

I'm absolutely certain that none of us meant any harm at all. I did not know that your post was meant in jest. I am sorry to have offended. If you are posting a joke, let us know and we will laugh with you.

ok. i am overly emotional.i have read tons of articles online about cat food, behavior, cat eating habits, and health issues.in fact, years ago i looked up on the internet about cats throwing up dry food when it hasnt even been totally digested. i read that some cats eat too fast so they cannot absorb dry food.some cats like mine, eat many small meals a day.
i also read about how cats are true carnivors so they need lots of protein-not corn, wheat, soy, grain,or veg.only if a cat has diabetes does he need less protein.oh,and i am happy to say that she has been exactly 11 pds most of her life,no mor,no less.
thanks for your concern.

Laura.
I think we are all emotional when it comes to our pet family, we understand. Also, I am relieved to know that your baby is eating overnight. 11 pounds is a good, healthy weight.
Hope you have a great weekend. My babies are right here with me and send their love.

Laura,

At first when I read the amount of cat food your cat was eating, I was concerned too. Glad to know she is eating more than this and eating again at night. LOL Whew!

I think someone posted to feed your cat both, since it seems your cat likes dry and wet food. I agree.

Cats sure do have different personalities and eating habits.

Enjoy her, she seems to be a unique pet. I loved her indecision story.
