My boyfriend smacked my kitten

hitting anyone

I got so upset last night that my boyfriend smacked my kitten. She's like 6 months now and I'm trying to break her of the habit of jumping up on people with bare skin. I know how painful it can be. We she did it to him while he was dressing and dug her claws into his skin...he turned and smacked her. Of course she seemed unfazed by this after a minute but still. I told him not to make a habit of disciplining her this way. He feels animals need this kind of discipline sometimes.

1.I'm still upset with him for smacking her, am I making too much of this?

2. How can I break her of this habit?

Get rid of the boyfriend, if he hits an animal what is to say you are not next? You are certainly not making to much of him hitting your pet.

As far as the kitten jumping, you can use a squirt bottle with water & everytime he jumps squirt him.

Jasmine,

Great to hear you talked! Good news!

is that your little kitten in your avatar? If so, she is adorable!!!!!!!!!!! :):)

Thanks for all the great posts and ideas here for discipline. My SO is in no way an abuser since he is very kind hearted. This was an incident I found shocking and upsetting to me. After a LONG talk last night about my feelings and what happened, he apologized again and asked me to forgive him explaining that he will never discipline her that way again and it was mostly a reflex action. Thanks all!

Jasmin,

That is good that you were able to communicate with your SO about your feelings. That is very important in a relationship. Hopefully, trimming kitties claws and scolding her in other ways will cure her of that habit as well.

My avatar IS jasmin when she was 2 months old. She is about 3 times that size now :) Thanks,... I tell her she is adorable everyday :)

Glad you and your SO had what seems to have been a positive conversation! Your kitty is so cute! I see that you derive your screen name from your kitty too. =)

If he smacks defenseless KITTENS what do you think he'll do to you when he doesn't appreciate your behavior? The warning signs are there. Trust your instincts. This guy is T.R.O.U.B.L.E.. The damage he'll do YOU is pretty much guaranteed if you don't ditch him now. Listen to the voice of warning whispering in your ear 'Something's not right...' Some people call it God whispering. Whatever you call it, that voice will NEVER steer you wrong. It's a woman's built-in defense mechanism.

BTW, I take care of 3 neighborhood cats who have claws and, of the many times they've unwittingly dug their claws in me, my reflex has NEVER been to hit. I usually let out a "yowl" and jump up. If he doesn't understand your cat is just BEING a cat he's never going to get it.
