My ball blew up!

I was doing SuperSets a few days ago and my ball exploded! I had JUST finished with some triceps work and had put the weights down to stretch when KA-BLOOEY!!! I am just glad that I didn't have the weights in my hands when it happened. So - I really do think that doing the exercises on the ball makes them more effective, but I'm not sure I want to risk it anymore. How significant is the difference between doing them on the ball as opposed to doing them on a bench? I'll still use a ball for the core work and stuff without weights, but I'm not sure I want to risk using weights on it.

oh my I never thought they could burst!!! I don't have one yet but have seriously been considering it.....does everyone like them and what's the best to buy? do they come burst resistant and about how much should I expect to spend on one?

Oh my Nancy....thank goodness you are okay.

As I just purchased my first stability ball while awaiting Cathe's new workouts, I fear I sacrificed safety for $ as I purchased one on sale at a local sporting goods store for $15 and it is not burst resistant.

Can you please tell me what exactly happened? Did it roll over something sharp or simply explode (so to speak). Also...how long have you had it & used it? Perhaps these non-burst resistant balls have a shorter life-span that we need to keep in mind?

~kandy~who really should have known better since she's a small-boned person in an extra large body :(

Hi I really think their is a difference in the burst and normal ball as I do have them both. With the burst you can use weights on them. I got my and also Cathe got this from the BB series from here http://www.power-systems.com/ but I couldn't find it, maybe they don't carry them or they are out of them. Another webite also that carries burst resistant is http://www.fitness1st.com/exercise-balls-equipment.html, HTH

Edit to say yes I did find it here is the link http://www.power-systems.com/Categories/CloseUp.aspx?l=2&gid=839&c=10&sc=29

Both hubby & I have the burst resistant balls that Cathe used. (The link above that Barbara posted from PowerSystems) Actually, I should say I HAD one since mine burst last week! :-( I was doing a "wall-squat" and went to roll down and back up and I heard this hissing sound and said to my hubby, "What is that?" All of a sudden my ball was deflating very slowly. I had rolled it against the corner of a pointed piece of wood of my BodyBar rack hanging on the wall. I didn't realize I was that close. It deflated VERY slowly since it is/was burst resistant. I was soooo disappointed since they are a bit pricy and called the company and I had just passed the One-Year-Guarantee point! Waaaah! That being said, I did love the ball and never felt unsafe on it, even with weights. Good Luck!

I got a Thera-band slow deflate ball from http://www.fwonline.com for $18.95. With shipping I think it was around $24.00. I really like it and their service is very fast. It was here in 4 days. I had a Reebok one that I had to pump up everytime I used it. THis is so much better.

I actually never read the package to see if mine is burst resistance, but it should be as I paid $30 for it. I'll have to check that out.

Dang!!!

I love my ball but I am still learning to use it. "Real " gyms have been using them for a long time so I think that they are pretty good tool.

Do you think the ball may have popped because of extremes in temperature?

I have had a Nautalis (sp?) brand ball for 2 years and it hardly ever needs re-inflated and is rock solid. I highly recommend it.

My ball was a Spri Resist-A-Ball and it had been great (until this week!). It always felt very solid and secure and I had no reason to question it in any way. That's why I was so surprised when it exploded! It was fairly old (4 years maybe), but didn't seem to have any problems. I live in Taiwan where the temperature doesn't change too much, so it most definitely was not due to changes in temp. So - I will certainly get a burst-resistant ball, but I'm still not sure I want to use weights on it. Does anyone know how much benefit will be lost by doing Push/Pull and Supersets on the bench instead of the ball?? I will still use the ball for the unweighted moves, but when I pick up weights, I'll move to the bench.

I blew up a ball, one big bang and I was on the floor thinking what was that? It was a verry expensive ball the gym I was teaching at lent me to practice at home. I never heard the hissing as the tiny sharp piece of glass was making its way through the thick rubber. I could never figure out where that peice of glass came from, but now I always sweep and double check my area. I now have a huge exercise mat as well and usually do all my ball stuff on it. Hope you feel better that big bang is quite a shock isn't it? Bri:)

Thank goodness you didn't hurt yourself! The burst resistant and/or slow-deflating balls are definitely the way to go. They're made so that even if you puncture them they don't lose air suddenly. I punctured my first ball somehow (I'm not sure what did the puncturing) but also got the hissing sound, and the air went out very slowly. It probably took at least five minutes so there were no sudden surprises.

However, I did have an unpleasant surprise recently when, drenched with sweat at the end of a workout, I slid off the ball doing ab work and hit the floor HARD!! The whole house shook. Fortunately because of the extra padding on my butt, I bounced around a little bit but didn't injure myself. :+
