Muscle soreness

Hi
I finally joined a gym and took 2 classes last week (snow prevented me from taking more) - spinning and a interval step/weights class.

I have 2 questions:
I've taken spinning months ago, but I've never gotten sore in my butt/legs area at all from it. I definately get my heart rate up though. Should I be sore in these areas? How do I know if I'm working these areas (which I definately want to do) when I don't even get a tad bit sore?

In the other class, the instructor had us use weights (about 5 lbs) during the step workout. We weren't doing super bouncy moves, but there was some momentum. I always thought this was wrong. Is it? It's been 4 days since then and my lower biceps are still really sore even though I only used 5lb weights? Did I strain something?
