Hi Everyone,
I don't post often but I do read the forums frequently. I was just wondering if anybody can explain to me everything I should know about MP3 Players that are so popular right now?

My son rides home with my neighbors from hockey practice a couple nights a week and he gets told that he "should" have one and that they have a lot of songs he can record from them. Thanks neighbors! I'm not going to just go out and buy one, of course. He would need to earn the money towards it, but I wanted to find out as much information as I can. I checked on the internet and all I find is information about places where you can buy them.

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me! I really appreciate it.

I got the Ipod Nano for xmas and I LOVE it!! Their great little devices. As far as the logistics of them (well at least the ipod)...it's easy to download music from your own cd collection to them. It comes with a program for your computer that makes this task very simple. As far as music downloads from these internet sites that sell music it's easy, but it costs money. The key here is that not all MP3 players are compatible with every music download site. I've gotten my downloads from Apple's site Itunes. It's $.99 per download...it can add up, especially if your son is really into music.

You have to research which type he would need...if you're going to use it during exercise you need one with a flash drive (I think that's what it's called) because they don't skip nearly as much, but the offset to this is that these usually have alot less storage space. So if you decide to get him one just make sure you research them. Consumer Reports online has a pretty good review of them.

Long story short, I love mine. It makes running so much more enjoyable to have something to listen to!!

Re: compatibilty with download sites. Apple made its own format with the Ipod so that Apple could be incompatible and exclusionary. You have to use Apple software.

If you go with a MP3 player instead of an I-"anything" you will be compatible with all MP3 download sites. You will also be able to use Windows media player to copy your CDs to the player.

I agree with the "flash drive" statement if the device is going to be bumped, jostled etc. The other players have an actually hard drive which is mechanical and could be jarred or broken. The numbers 1G, 20G, etc refers to the size of the memory and how many songs can be stored.

Walmart.com charges $.88 per download. There are other sites as well.

This is pretty sweet! I LOVE being able to pull songs from my CD's and put them on my MP3 Player (which I bought at Sears for $60)

I have a Rio Cali Sport, and also got it for around $60. It does the job for me. I can download from my own CD's and Walmart has $.89 downloads.

I use mine for running and my weightroom workouts. I've had no problems with it. I also have Cardio Coach on mine.

Just think, if your son gets one, it'll be like the "Gift that keeps on giving"...b/c maybe you can use it, too! :)

You can transfer your hard CD's into the IPOD software. You just can't download from sites other than Itunes directly into itunes. There may or may not be a way to convert an MP3 file into a AAC (IPOD) file. I haven't investigated that because i don't use any other music download sites (yet).

I have an iPod mini and I love it (it's hard-drive based but I've never had any problem with it skipping when I go running.) As soon as you put a standard mp3 file into your iTunes library it's converted to AAC format and you can load it up on your iPod. Also, if you buy music from sites other than the iTunes music store, you can wipe out the copy protection by burning it onto a CD and then putting the music back onto your computer via iTunes. It's a piece of cake.

I just bought a Samsung player after researching. One site that was very useful was this one:

I really like it and have loaded songs from 3 different CDs, and bought 2 cardio coach work-outs. Mine also has an FM radio on it.
