Moving to MN--need a new car

Hi all
I'm transferring to Minnesota in a couple of months (Bloomington area). I currently have a real wheel drive car and will definitely need something more snow friendly. Those of you from the upper Midwest--do I need 4 wheel drive or will just front wheel drive car suffice? Thanks in advance! :)

Great thanks!! Don't want to spend more for a 4x4 if an FWD car can suffice. I'm coming from DC where they overreact on snowfall and aren't as prepared to clear the roads. ;-). I'm sure MN has it down to a science

Hi,

I have an AWD Subaru Forester that is great in the snow...I'm in Buffalo...we have a horrible reputation for being the snow capital of the east. Although that is not true, we do get some large storms.

I loved my Subaru so much, my husband bought one too!

Agree on AWD Subaru.. we have a Forester and an Outback... better handling than any 4WD or SUV we've ever had, better fuel economy too. with decent snow tires you can go anywhere.

I live in the suburban Twin Cities, and I too vote for an all-wheel-drive vehicle, preferably something that has a little heft to it rather than an overly-light car. And make sure you get one with TIRES BUILT FOR SNOW !!!!! My husband and I got a very-slightly-used Buick LaCrosse a couple of years ago that we later found had been purchased at an auction in Phoenix; the tires on this thing were not built for slippery snow-covered roads, and he and I individually almost slid into other cars before we realized it.

Just in passing - it's about 5 degrees above today, up from 11 below yesterday. And spring doesn't really start consistently until around late May. Be prepared, my friend.

It gets cold here

Another MN Cathlete here. I have a truck with 4-wheel drive and I love it. Also, the heated seats are fantastic-as long as I live in MN, my vehicle will always have to have heated seats. Welcome to MN-the seasons are beautiful here.

Another AWD driver here, although I need this SUV to transport my bikes too! I couldn't fathom anything else for the winter, but front wheel is way better than rear wheel if you can't do AWD. I have a rear wheel drive car and she sits in the garage like a princess the entire winter. My SUV takes front stage and like today, its been snowing (lightly) all day, but its bitterly cold (tomorrow -25) so there is black ice on long stretches of the highway where I'm at. Like Aquajock said, get tires built for the snow! And omg, the seasons...each one distinct and so wonderful. Ooofta! Ya it's like that :)
