Moving my DS

Well, we moved our DS into his new residence yesterday. For those who aren't familiar with our situation, 22 yr old DS has Prader Willi Syndrome and is clinically retarded. We had to fight the county Mental Retardation organization legally for 4 long years before they would recognize him as being qualified for services. Then we had to wait for space to open up in a home specifically geared towards his needs. Yesterday we moved him into such a residence and everything went well. He was happy with the move and starts working today. The organization that runs the home has a formal dinner dance in a couple weeks and DS is excited to be getting fitted for a tux for that. He will have a daily exercise program and we expect him to lose weight. (He is 5'4" and weighs 244.) He will finally have a life and we can now live in a home without locks on the frig, freezer, breadbox and cupboards. Thanks to all for your prayers and support.

hi robin,

i am glad to here that you finally got into the residence. i hope he really enjoys it at his new place. its been so hard for you guys but you didn't take s**t from any of these ppl.

we have viola's camp on july 5th and the united way has paid part of it for us which is great b/c we just spent most of his paycheck on getting viola new summer clothes. and in august she is getting summer services, hehehe i don't think the special ed director likes us. he is the type who is intimidated by a mouthy woman, let alone a woman with biceps :7

here is to mothers who never give up, and have a mean set of arms to push those who push our kids aside.

Robin,

I am so happy for you and your family. I know how this has weighed on you and it must be such a relief that your DS is in a place where he can be productive and safe. I can't imagine how hard it must have been trying to care for him at home. I'm so pleased that the move took place without incident and that your DS is happy with it. I'm thinking about sending you a banana stand for your kitchen counter:)

Hee, hee, Michele. There is a bunch of bananas and a quarter of an apple pie sitting on the kitchen counter even as I type.

kassia, keep on fighting for your daughter. I hope you can get all the services she needs with little hassle. I hate to think of all the people who have taken no for an answer and have not had the means or ability to fight the system. It's sad that the people who are paid to help offen give you the most trouble.

Robin,
I'm so glad to hear that all went well with the move. I hope your son is very happy in his new residence :)!
Cath :)

Robin I am so happy to read about the great success of moving your ds, and I am excited that he is doing real well there!!

Robin,

I'm so glad for your whole family -- this is such wonderful news! I honestly can't imagine the struggles you've had, but knowing how much I love my 19-year-old son gives me a clue as to where you've found the strength, patience, courage and stamina to be so supportive and loving to your son, day in and day out. It's just fantastic that you won the war with the county -- but that was inevitable, Robin, because they didn't know the Mama Bear they were up against!

I hope your son's adjustment continues to be smooth as silk, and that he flourishes, and that you and your DH will enjoy having this well-deserved freedom and peace of mind. Hugs to you!
