Motion/Sea/Car Sickness?

Need your experience on what products/remedies you used for motion sickness. I'll be going on a cruise in April and I already know I get car sick if I don't look out in front of me at all times. And flying, the decent will get to me if I don't yawn all the way in until the plane lands.

Has anyone beat/help with this awful sickness, any advice out there?

I'd prefer not to take medicines (side effects), I'm so sensitive to that, unless of course you swear by it.

I happened to see a segment on Dr. Oz where he discussed motion sickness and some remedies. I believe one of his non medicated remedies was to wear a wrist band. He talked about a few solutions though so maybe you can check it out on his website. It was also suggested to me once (since I also get sick on airplanes during decent), that I hold my nose and keep blowing out to make my ears pop. I haven't tried that yet, but it's supposidly "tried and true"! Hope this helps and have fun on your cruise! :)

I get motion sick very easily in a car, on rollercoasters etc. I've been on 2 cruises and used the wristbands (called seabands, I've bought them at Walmart) and found them very helpful. I still was quite sick the first night and then okay after that. (I also used them when I was nausea from pregnancy.) DD also gets very carsick and on our cruise last year she was 8 and she used the wrist band. She was okay except for one night when the sea was rough AND we were watching BOLT (A disney movie )in the 3D with the movie theatre at the front of the crusise ship this was just to much and we had to go sit outside for awhile.

We're heading to Disney world tomorrow:D:D This time I'm going to try some ginger pills (just plain gingerroot) to see if I can do the rollercoasters without getting sick.

Best thing I can recommend is to make sure you have something in your stomach!!! Honestly, it helps a lot. Ginger helps, too.... even ginger snaps. Good luck, and enjoy!

I get really carsick tho not airsick or seasick. Even short distances especially at night can destroy me so usually I drive. I have tried natural remedies such as ginger and even tried wristbands but I finally had to cave and take dramamine. It is the only thing that works for me and I never have any side affects. This Thanksgiving we had a 2 hour drive down and back. I took dramamine before we left in the a.m and I was good all the way home at 10 p.m.

I did the scoplamine (sp) patch on my cruise. It is an Rx but does really work. I get extremely motion sick and was fine all but one night. That night was very rough and I took some benedryl and knocked myself out. If you do this put the patch on before you get on the plane and leave it on a couple days after you get home to get your land legs back. I got the sickest the day after I got back home after I took the patch off. The only side effect for me was that it dialated my pupils.

I've taken a Bonine pill. I usually only need it the first day if the ship rocking....that's usually only on a small ship.

I hear that ginger works the best. They also did an episode on Mythbusters and ginger was the one items that helped for sea sickness.

I'd love to help, but just reading the topic line made me sick!!!

I am fine in the front seat of a car. No bus, no planes, no boats for me.

But my sister SWEARS by the wristbands!!! She has done 2 cruises now with them and NO drugs!!!

Good luck and have fun

I tried the seasickness patch (worn behind the ear...someone recommended it..scalpamine?, I think). The patch made me sick and when I took it off and just took the less drowsy version of Dramamine, I was fine and actually took a second cruise.

I think that I would try ginger or Bonine (I think that one makes you less sleepy and will last for awhile).

But I did take Dramamine (a full pill for the flight and then less than half a tablet every 24 hours after that for the week long cruise, a tiny bit more if I felt seasick at all due to rought seas). Like I said, 2 cruises and I would never have gone again if the Dramamine wasn't a manageable sloution and I am just like you...I don't even take Tylenol or Motrin unless I absolutely have to. I just don't like taking medications.

Good luck! Hope you have a wonderful cruise!!

Another motion sickness sufferer. A new cause to add to the list is skiing. When I was in high school I could ski all day without issue, now, three to four runs and I'm off in the bushes feeding the squirrels. I've tried everything, even the sea bands and nothing helps. I wish there was a permanent solution, I really miss skiing. : (

Years ago we took a tropical cruise (calm waters/big ship) and the sea bands worked great, they just look goofy. Have a nice vacation. : )

I also get very carsick and airsick on small planes and seasick on small boats, however I went on a (large ship) cruise a few years ago and didn't need anything at all, totally fine (except a few days AFTER the cruise I still felt the rocking motion). I have tried dramamine and I feel terrible when taking it, so I use ginger products and also found a peppermint oil aromatherapy that you dab behind the ears and it was very helpful (and smelled good). I think I got it at Target or walmart and it's a tiny little bottle. Happy crusing!

Thank you everyone for the great ideas. I do appreciate your suggestions. Lots to think about before the trip.

Kinda leaning towards ginger. I bought some today and they do have a bite. They taste really good.:) Perhaps they will do the trick. We'll see, still have some time to think about it.
