Most nutritious foods/drinks you can think of

I'm sitting here with a nasty cold and I need to feel better tomorrow so I can get back to the office. I don't have much of an appetite, but I'm determined that whatever I have be highly nutritious. What should I ask my DH to get for me at the store? I was thinking maybe some of those Odwalla "superfood" drinks. Any other suggestions for foods or drinks with highly-concentrated nutrition? Thanks!
Nancy

I swear by Ruby Red and Airborn. My husband just came back from a business trip in Asia, and everybody, I mean everybody in his group got sick during the trip. He had a mix of Ruby Red/Airborn/green tea mix every day and never got sick. I drink that too every day and I try to believe that it really helps me to not get sick, or in your case recover faster. Get better soon!

Emer'gen-C

Nancy:

Emer’gen-C is a vitamin C supplement that will help knock out a cold. Eat plenty of fresh fruit (especially citrus) and veggies and drink plenty of water. I prefer the Emer’gen-C Ora-Pops (fizzing lozenges), but you can get it as a fizzing drink mix too.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you feel better in the morning.

Blessings,
Heather B.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1 NIV).

RE: Emer'gen-C

Thanks so much, mac and Heather. I am eating a yummy Cranberry C Monster Odwalla bar and drinking a Berries GoMega drink (this stuff tastes good even without anappetite.) I have some Airborne here in the house and will take that as well (why didn't I think of that??). My DH also got me some Cold-Eez. I've been taking Ester-C as well. Is that similar to Emer'gen-C?

All in all, I'm treating myself pretty well here. ;)

And a nice warm brandy with a couple of Godiva chockies on the side. Soothe the brain, the body might follow, that's my philosophy at times like these ;~)

Seriously, though, Nancy, sending warm healing wishes...

I just recently hit the 'recovery' side of a nasty throat/lung/sinus 'ick' and it was marvelous for my eating! No junk at all, because I wanted to fuel my immune system.

Some good choices:
Veggie broths (preferably homemade or low sodium--the canned stuff is highly processed and full of sodium). The warmth helps boost the immune system (at least that's my theory!) and the veggies provide nutrients. Put some garlic in, and add the anti-bacterial/anti-viral properties of this very helpful veggie.

Herbal teas that contain ginger (or, perhaps better, fresh-grated ginger, with a squeeze of lemon, with a healthy sweetener, steeped and drunk as a tea) or an herbal blend designed for cold and flu.

This would be a great time to try some green smoothies. Along with fruits of your choice (vitamin C and antioxidants), add in a few leaves of kale or spinach. Best to use a powerful blender for this, to get the fiber as well, but get it, and the other nutrients, in an easier-to-digest (thus faster-assmilated) form. This also provides enzymes from raw foods that help keep enzymes that work in the immune system from being diverted to use for digestion of cooked foods.

I think it's important not just what you do put into your body at this time, but what you don't put in. Avoid the processed foods, white flour/sugars, anything that isn't real food.

In addition to foods, if you have sinus congestion, try nasal irrigation (using a neti pot or a nasal wash kit from a pharmacy). I've been doing that for the last 2 days, and it surely helps get guk out of the sinuses. Not the most pleasant experience, but very useful

If you are on the downside of the cold (it's subsiding) then a light exercise can help boost the immune system (again, my theory about raising body temperature, just like the immune system itself does to fight off illness) and bring on a sweat to help clear out the pores. (I was finally able to do a light, 20-minute workout yesterday, but sweated like I did a tougher 1-hour workout, and I felt a lot better afterwards. I think it did work to kind of 'pump out some crud';-) through sweating.

You can also take a bath in epsom salts and clay (bentonite is available at pharmacies) with a package of shredded fresh ginger thrown in, to help produce a sweat to help clear things out.

I won't guarantee that this will get you in fighting shape by tomorrow, but I'd suggest taking the day off if you need it. There's often nothing worse than NOT taking a necessary 'time out,' and thus making the illness drag on further.

I take echinasia/golden seal, 3 caps in morning and 3 at night. I get them at GNC they are together in one bottle. You should start to feel better the next day!! Just don't take them for longer than 2 weeks at a time.

Good old-fashion chicken soup cooked with lots of yummy veggies. O.J. isn't just for breakfast it's choked full of V-C and don't forget ginger ale, and maybe some grape juice for the tummy with a little sherbet to soothe the throat. A cold just has to run its course...

Generations of ancestory can't be wrong...

I hope you feel better. I'm laid up right now too. But bound and determined to get better quick:)

Since it was on a line by itself, I thought maybe the caps were because of that
:)

Airborne does wonders for me, other thing is lots of vitamin c and occicilicum (sp?) that homeopathic thing (lots of advertising on tv during cold and flue season) works for me, my kids and my DH, and I swear by hot lemon with honey!

Hope you feel better soon, Nancy!

Lots of water. Lots of chicken soup, preferably made by someone's loving hands. If you can't find a willing volunteer I'd recommend Healthy Choice. I've also read that hot foods that contain casin (sp?) like hot peppers are great for the immune system.

I'm feeling a nasty cold coming on too. My whole family has it. It's knocking them out with high fevers that seem to drag on for days. I'm overdosing on Vit C, hoping I can keep it at bay.
