Most common baby names

Oh my goodness....I had forgotten about my childhood friend, who was also an April. Her last name was "Schauers"...pronounced, of course, "Showers". 'Nuff said.

My oldest son goes to school with a girl named Sunny and her last name is Day.

I like names that aren't too popular, but still familiar. I also prefer names that can't be turned into nicknames. One of my sons has an unusual name - Reece. He's almost 12 and I still can't get used to it (the name was my DH's choice and we couldn't agree on anything else).

Why folks come up with these names is beyond me. My completely adorable nephew's name is Harrison, last name Pickles. You don't have to be a genius to figure out that once he's in school kids will love calling him Harry Pickles. His Mom says that won't happen but she ain't gonna be on the school yard with him. I guess it could be worse, our Aunt Olive Pickles has lived a long happy life:)

I have 3 kids and they have biblical names. Caleb, Sarah and Isaac. IF in the future I have more, we will name the boy Josiah or Micah. The girl will be named Rachel. Maybe Leah. I haven't thought of another girls name yet. I was really wantng names that you can't shorten. Like Joseph to Joe or Michael to Mike, and so on. I never want to know what the sex of the baby is. When I went to have my c-section w/ Sarah, my husband had his heart set on all boys (yeah, like he has that power:p ), she came out a girl and we had no name for a girl. I was in the hospital for 3 days and 2 nights in which we had to figure out a girls name.

"I was really wanting names that you can't shorten."

My ex-MIL thought that too. So she named her children David and Deborah... helloooooooooooo? I'm not sure what she was thinking, but yes, she's the only one who calls them David and Deborah. To the rest of the world, they are Dave and Deb.:p

I like unusual names. Common names doesn't do anything for me although my name is common. There are too many Michaels, James, etc in my family so my boys' names are Nicolaus and Tennyson. Nicolaus is a latin spelling but it can be mistaken for German spelling. Tennyson is the name of one of my fav. poets. Their middle names are Octavius and Gabriel. I named Tenny's middle name Gabriel because of the angel. Nick, I named after Octavious Augustus Caesar because he was a strong intelligent man with morals. Plus I LOVE roman history. Besides, their names fit their personalities so perfectly. I'm the freak in my family anyway. Everyone else here named their children simple and common but me, I have to have different. :)

God, some of these stories are just absolutely priceless. I feel soooo sorry for kids who get trapped with weird names and bizarre spellings and then we wonder why they turn into delinquents.

I'm all for giving your child a unique identity, but I think it's so important to consider the social consequences of being named after a product or a flower or a season or mom's hippie whim!

My eldest is named for his dad (I wasn't thrilled about that at first) and my youngest has his elder brother's first name as his middle name because I wanted them to feel connected. Child #1 is a biblical but uncommon name; child #2 is way up there on the most popular list. We didn't pick it because it was popular, we picked it because it's a gorgeous biblical name and he was so fat and squishy it just suited him perfectly. :)

PS: I went to high school with someone named April May. I always felt really sorry for her because the kids made fun of her all of the time.

PPS: I have also spent my entire life correcting people who INSIST that my name is really "Maria." That's about the only complaint I have about my name, because you can't really shorten it in too torturous a way. :7

There is a family in our community with the last name "Sweet". So naturally they named their daughters Very, Truly, Dearly, and I forget the 4th one, Purely or something. Hopefully not Sticky. :7

Eminemz 2...Does that teacher who told you about the kids who were named after Jello live near Lancaster, PA?

Here are some of the unique names of kids I've taught over the past 12 years or so. These names haven't been repeated in any of my classes over those years.

I love to hear names that are unusual. I love that in the African American culture there is this thing about making up new names. I think it is based in the whole history of being ripped away from their home (Africa) and then being given the name of their "Master". And further to have to take a christian name, when you do not identify yourself as a christian. In some ways it's a reclaiming of their own culture. Good for them, I celebrate it! I love to read about other cultures and visit them (although I have limited opportunity). So, when names are given because of some family history or meaningful story or whatever, I love that.

Marie-
It sounds to me like some of these poor kids have a lot more to deal with than strange names. I mean, if you have two twin boys and you name them both Stephen, that just speaks volumes about how screwed up you are and what an awful parent you are likely to be. I have always said and still maintain, that anyone who wants to be a parent should be required to obtain a license. It is one of the most important jobs in the world and yet requires absolutely no training of any kind. Scary.

With some of these whacko names (two twins with the same name?), makes you wonder if they just see their kids as toys or something.

If they want whacky names, they should adopt some pets and give them the names (though the families with the kinds with strange names probably have pets named "Bob" and "Lucie" or something....off topic, but I once met a woman who, when I told her my name was Kathryn, said "oh, that's my cat's name!" There are just some human hames the really don't fit pets.)

I like short and sweet names like.....Erin, Quinn, Tess and Cole. Those are my current fav's anyways. I work in a nursery and the current names which I'm getting tired of hearing (no offense) are Aiden an Isabella. Seems like more than half the babies I see have one or both of those names...yep, had a "Aidan Isabella" the other day.

Hey, i'm named after a flower and I love every minute of it. I'm so glad my momma was a hippie. I think Waterliy is the coolest name ever. Never heard anyone else with it. Also, you can't go wrong with the spelling.
As for shortening it, almost everyone calls me Lily.
