i have never been a morning person, my best workout time is around 4:00 pm. on the weekends i would rather do my workouts first thing in the morning but i almost always get lightheaded and sick to my stomachx( ! does anyone have any suggestions or am i just not meant to do morning workouts? thanks and have a fabulous day!:7

I'm no expert, but you might need to eat something before your workouts, and definitely have water to drink. Maybe half a smoothie or a piece of fruit. I usually have a banana and water and then wait 20-30 min. before working out, unless I'm doing a weight workout and then I eat a little more and workout sooner b/c eating doesn't interfere with that for me.
Try having something in your stomach, and taking small sips of water during the workout.
I also prefer the afternoons, but unfortunately it doesn't always work out that way!:p
Hope this helps,
Mattea

I personally have to work out in the mornings or I would never do it. I have had lightheadedness and became sick to my stomach at times. I am no pro but through trial and error this has worked for me. I consume 1/2 of a zone perfect bar every morning 30 minutes before I work out (3g of fat, 8g of protein, 10g of carbs total of 100 cal.) about 8:00-8:30. I keep them in night stand and break one in half when I get up and drink about 12-24 oz of water. When I meet up with Cathe in my basement and she says power 15 we are on, no time for lightheadedness or tummy problems and this has worked for me. Also since I have been doing this I have noticed that I have alot more energy and strength for jumps, jacks, weights and what ever else Cathe has to throw at me. You don't have to use Zone perfect, use something you like but stay close to that ratio. (read about this ratio in an article) This is the only time I consume a zone perfect bar. I choose this bar because of the ratio and they taste great and I hate powdered protein drinks....YUK!

Hope this will help.

I've noticed that when I don't have plenty of carbs with my dinner the night before, I don't feel very well the next morning when working out. I do get the lightheadedness you speak off. So for me paying attention to what I eat for dinner is important.

Just before my w/o I have a smoothie: soy milk, protein powder, banana, ground line seed and some instant coffee. Sometimes I add frozen fruit if I have it, like berries. Takes 5 minutes to make and it doesn't bother me at all when working out

Dutchie:)

This sounds exactly like me! I also eat 1/2 of a Zone bar before working out first thing in the morning and it has made all the difference in the world. I don't thing that I would make it through the entire workout if I didn't.

does drinking gatorade during the workout defeat the purpose? Those things have atleast 200 calories per serving. I to am getting very dizzy during my workouts and am not sure what to do.

I just recently moved to AM workouts as well. When I do weight training, I usually have either a half of a protein shake(mixed w/skim milk) or a yogurt about 30 min before the workout. I can't eat before cardio. I get sick to my stomach. I have another half of a protein shake immediately after the workout.

I am also a morning workout person.... once I am showered and ready for the day, I don't like getting sweaty. :)

I have learned through trial and error that it's important to eat some carbs the night before (I think you need to eat them at least three hours before going to bed) as well as a protein bar in the AM. I haven't tried the Zone Perfect, but I am going to give them a try. I usually get Balance bars or sometimes the Protein Plus (can't think of their actual name)... some of those bars are just NASTY, ick. You just have to be careful to eat them about 30-45 min before your workout.

I've also found that mixing a small amount of gatorade into my water gives me extra energy without the entire bottle of sugar. I usually only do this on days I am lifting very heavy and/or following up with a long cardio session. I figure a little sugar is a small price to pay to avoid lying on the treadmill in the middle of my company gym. ;-)

Cheers,
Marie

glad and sorry to see i am not alone! i was thinking the same thing about eating beforehand and now definitely will try it. thanks to everybody for their help!:7

OK, I am in the minority here, but really don't have time to wait 30 before my workout. I'm working out by 5 am and to get up any earlier for me would be out of the question! anyway, I have found that drinking a tall (2C) glass of skim milk (and water during the workout) does the trick. I can't eat anything at that time and figured the milk would give me energy as well as the hydration I need. Don't know if there's any science at all to back this up, but it works for me!

I'm with lala1... I am in the rec room with the DVD player on no later than 5 am - and many times earlier (4:45 as early as 4:30 if I have to go out of town on business that day). If I'm feeling the nausea come on or lightheadedness (especially before starting the workout), I'll have a small glass of milk (maybe 4 ounces) and/or a small handfull of cheerios or bland cereal or vanilla wafers (the mini ones) just to get the blood sugar up a bit until I can refuel after the workout. I also always have a 32 ounce glass of ice water that I drink about 8 ounces of before I start and drink throughout the workout. Probably should try the 1/2 protein bar...
