More makeup or less?

I keep hearing that as we get older (hate that phrase!!!:)) that we should wear less makeup because it makes us look old. I am 48 and I look TERRIBLE with only a little makeup!

Especially my eyes - I use brown tones, nothing wild - but I really need eye shadow, liner, mascara and a little color on my eyebrows or my eyes just fade back in my head. Also I am very pale, so if I don't use foundation, blush and powder I look invisible or sick or both.

So I am thinking that this "one size fits all" advice isn't really true for everyone. Thoughts?

I think this "less is more" advice is stupid, IMHO. Why can there not be a happy medium any more? I think that we are individuals and should act as such. :) I say screw the supposed experts. :)

I think it's true--at least when it comes to foundation. Thicker foundations tend to collect in your wrinkles & make them stand out even more.

I use Dior Airflash--I LOVE that stuff! It's pricey but lasts quite a while, is nice & light & blends w/my skin tone beautifully. In fact, I don't use concealer under my eyes anymore b/c it was making the wrinkles look worse. I blend the Airflash under my eyes w/a foundation brush (BTW if you don't currently use a foundation brush you MUST get one--it makes a world of difference) & it does a pretty decent job of improving skin tone without a heavy coat of foundation.

I wear less and less and I am/was a makeup junkie. Being a former flight attendant I hit the makeup counters in every city.

Now - I go for the mineral stuff because I have less breakouts with it.

I fell better with less but I must say I don't photograph as well. I look very washed out.

I think exercise, clean eating, lots of h20 and sunshine are the best makeup . . !

I think less does not actually mean less. It's the choice of colors that matters

don't use flashy color. stay with mat soft colors.

if you want foundation, use some, but don't buy a thick one. use water based foundation

Make up forever have a great water based one.

i am doing my 2nd make up class. I don't practice on people, i take that class for fun. but i definitely learned a lot

so, just neutral colors and mat is my favorite for natural look

So, have fun with make up but choose the right colors and the way you apply also make a difference.

I'm 38. I wore full makeup every day of my life until a couple of years ago. Then I stopped, and now only sometimes wear a tiny hint of blush and some lipstick. I look way better, and no one even noticed any difference! Tiny blemishes don't show up now the way they do when they are covered with makeup. I'm so glad I made the leap- it's one of the best things I ever did for myself, stopping wearing make up.

I actually wear more than I did when I was younger. Then I wore lipstick and mascara. Now I wear mascara, eyebrow stuff, hint of highlighter (phot op or makeup forever) and lipstick.

I have too many freckles/spots to cover with out a mask so I just forgo any foundation and just wear a good moisturizer/sunscreen.

I have never really worn foundation. I always feel like it makes my skin look fake. I do put on a light dusting of blush, mascara and some under eye concealer. If I am going out in the evening I may wear some eyeliner, but I feel silly if I wear much eye makeup in the daytime. I like to wear mascara because my eyelashes are so blond, but recently I have considered not wearing it anymore.

I am 38 and up until last year I hated makeup I want natural looking and light I switched everything to Chanel, another a bit pricy, but I rarely have to wear anything, or should I say my skin looks so good I don't want to nwear anything, so on light days I wear tinted moisturizer and nights and rain days i wear just their powder, wonderful coverage, the tinted moisturizer leaves my face a bit dewy looking.

Their skin care has actually left me with moisture. Everything I have used dried me out the moment I started putting makeup on with this line I can apply makeup at any point of the day and no dry skin .

Swing by their counter and ask them to do each side of your face with them and check them out, in different mirrors around the cosmetic area and go to one of the outside doors and check it out in the daylight.

I'm 35 and I still have the greasiest skin on the planet. I use Stila spf 30 tinted moisturizer, Clinique almost powder mineral foundation, mark eyeshadow and blush, I also use eyeshadow w/a wet liner brush instead of liner, and Loreal lash tubes mascara. I always wear lipgloss instead of lipstick. It sounds like a lot, but the colors are mostly neutral and I blend, blend, blend. I'd love to wear less, but I have kind of a boyish face and extremely broad shoulders. If I don't wear any, I look like a boy, and if I wear too much, I look like a drag queen.

I think that as we age we just need to use a lighter touch with our makeup. We also need to be very mindful of shimmery items.

Less, no way! Different, yes. Powder over foundation used to leave such a flawless finish when I was in my thirties, but nowadays powder is a big no-no. And red lipsticks are now completely out of the question. But foundation is more essential than ever now. There's nothing like uneven skin tone to distract the eye from even the most beautiful facial features. And nothing like perfect skin to make a beauty out of almost anyone.

Yes, well, I still have people tell me I'm too old to have such long hair! (It's down to my butt!) I'm 47 and I still wear makeup. I like earth tones, so mine is usually very natural looking.

I think these people who talk about what you should or shouldn't do at a certain age, should just worry about themselves! As long as you look good, who cares how much makeup you wear or how long your hair is or how short your skirt is, etc., etc.

Just MHO!:p

I find the older I am, the more time I´m spending in front of that mirror
I NEVER used to wear makeup, but now (at 52) wear a light foundation, and yes, powder on top, it doesn´t seem to settle into any wrinkles, a little blush, eyeliner, mascara, some light shadow under my brows to open my eyes a little...blablabla. But it ends up being a natural look...seriously, or my DDs wouldn´t let me out of the house! So much depends on how we age, some have more wrinkles than others, drier skin, more uneven tone and the list goes on.
But I have to say, my favorite trick is MaryKays illumiating pen...and although I love my MK rep, I don´t want to wear my makeup like she does

Yep. I'm 48 and I started lightening up years ago. When I was young I only used black around my eyes. At about 38 I concluded my makeup made me look like a heavy metal groupie so I switched to brown/black mascara and plum eyeliner. About 5 months ago I began wearing plain old brown eyeliner and mascara. I put on makeup once and don't retouch it all day so I can go a little heavy with the shadow, knowing it will quickly fade into my skin, though. The biggest switch for me was from deep reddish brown lip color to a soft pink lip gloss with a slightly brownish undertone. I was convinced it would make my thin, colorless lips disappear but it actually looks kind of sweet.

It was tough weaning myself off rich colors but doing it took years off my overall look. Look at young women between ages 28 - 35. Hardly none of them wear deep shades on a daily basis. I think the deeper shades I was wearing were dating my look and giving away my age.

My hair used to be down to my butt, too. But (BUT... ha ha. Sorry.), more than lightening up my makeup, cutting off my hair REALLY took the years off. May not be true for others but it was the best thing I ever did.

Laura, I've been looking at that airflash, but how the heck to you blend it under your eyes?! Do you spray it on the brush? I guess I'm picturing a hairspray style spray!

No, I just spray it directly on my face & blend it all over w/the brush, including under the eyes.

Nancy, you are so right about the powder--nothing looks more aging on aging skin than powder! I got a sample of that Bare Minerals stuff & OMG it made me look 10 years older.

I always wanted to go have make up applied so I can learn what would work best for me and how to best apply. I am totally unimaginative when it comes to make up.

I switched over to mineral makeup - I use Everyday Minerals, which you get from their website (www.everydayminerals.com) - and love it. It's way more natural looking but makes my skin look flawless. I actually get compliments on my skin on a regular basis. Then I have lightened it up to much more natural tones for day-to-day wear. I still will wear more if I'm going out, but that's only then. Most people guess me to be a solid decade younger than I am. So I generally wear, the mineral foundation and finishing dust, blush or bronzer, simple eyecolor (sometimes liner, sometimes not) brow powder (although I have them dyed to minimize the need for this), mascara and neutral lip gloss/lip stick.
