More about videos.the firm?

Cathlete
I don't like cheating on Cathe but while we are waiting...I posted yesterday that I ordered two videos. One of which was a cathe video that I broke so I needed a new one.
But there is a lot of talk in these forums about the Firm
tapes. Now, can anyone suggest a good one.Because i have bought a couple before but they look like new videos cause the case looks new and up to date but then when you put the video in, you go back about 30 years. Are they all like that or have they actual made some new tapes? Cause I don't want to buy another tape that came over on Noah's Ark.HAHA
Any suggestions would be great.I am in pretty good shape.I do aerobics or running almost everyday so the hardest tape that you can suggest the better.Cause if I don't break a good sweat I won't do it.
thanks,...
Lori

Hi,
Oldest but the best Firm: Volume 1 with Susan Harris
My favorites: Firm Strength
Tough Tape
Super Cardio and Super SCulpt
Cardio Burn
I have more but think these are all you really should spend your money on. If it came down to just ONE then Vol 1 would be it, despite it being a relic.

Hey Rachel,

Let me ask you a few questions about volume 1 if you don't mind. Does it have compound exercises? I want those. I love those and I think they are very effective. Does it require one of those fanny lifter things? I don't want to buy one of those. What can I use in place of that?

I've also heard that Firm Strength and Super Sculpt are good, but what do you think makes volume 1 better? I do like the fact that it is 1 hour and have floor work. I like floor work and need it. Does volume 1 have abs too?

Thanks Rachel,
Kristie :)

Hey Kristie,

What's a compound exercise? You mean like lunges and bicep curls at the same time? Then yes.

Vol 1 is most famous for it's KILLER floorwork. It's the Mother Load of floorwork. It does have abs and, no, it doesn't use the tall box (FL). Vol 1 is good, cuz it has everything. Cardio, wts., floor, abs. Total everything in 1 hr flat.

I know you didn't ask *me*, but I just couldn't help myself. Sorry.

Robin,

Thanks for the reply. Everything about it sounds good, except when you say it has cardio. What do you mean it has cardio? Like in between weights you do a little cardio or what? I find that a little odd and sort of irritating. How does it work exactly? I love floorwork though. How about the upper body portion of the tape, is that good?

Thanks,
Kristie

Hi Kristie-

The first half of the tape is cardio and compound movements. The second half is floor legs and then abs. Great tape. I have had it for 10+ years, have never completed all the floor leg reps with my 3 lb weights and would never sell/trade it for anything! Great tape and lots of room to grow with.

Good luck,
Nancy

I like FIRM videos myself. Super Sculpt is my favorite and I like Tough Tape as well. Super Cardio is good and well I like all of them even Standing Legs. I must be a real nut cause I like the mansion setting too. :-rollen

No one ever talks about them, but I think Standing Legs and Upper Body are the hardest. Only because you spend the whole tape working just upper or just lower body. When I do the newer Firm tapes, such as Firm Strength, they just don't seem to be nearly as challenging as doing Upper and Lower seperate. I get more workouts in that way as well, even though I am not sure more is better. If you use enough weight Standing Legs will kill you. Susan Harris is like a drill sargeant when she yells "LUNGE!!!!!!!!". However, Firm Volume 1 was challenging, but it is just so corny to me, I have a hard time getting into it. Also, with Firm tapes I find I cannot lift as heavy, just because you are doing so many reps, you fatigue quicker.

If you couldn't do additional cardio along with your weight workouts I would recommend the Firm instead of Cathe, but if you fit cardio in somewhere in addition, I would say the heavier, slower, Cathe's would be better....with maybe a Standing Legs thrown in here and there!!!! Good Luck!!!

Volume 1 works. It just does somehow. I use it if I need to look thin for something most of the time. It works better than any tape for that. Dont ask me why, it's pretty old and floorwork was done in what? Jane fonda days right? But it shrinks me fast. It's gruelling and the floorwork is long. You dont need a fanny lifter for this video and if you get a Firm vid that does then a rubbermaid stool works just as well if not better. It has cardio? Well the firm uses the light weights fast so it elevates your HR during the workout. That's their formula...they basically move quick ( though compared to the new videos vol 1 is slower paced )and use the weights to raise your HR so that you rarely have to resort to high impact. This tape has 2 sections with high impact that is short. That's how they manage to use such a small space and people who hate jumping around dont mind it too much because it only has about 10 minutes of running in place or in new vids...plyoing up and down. Some would argue aboutwhether or not HR elev due to lifting is aerobic or if lifting while your HR is elevated compromises form ... shrug. Dont have the answers.
Super sculpt is pretty good for a firm tape. When they came up with Super sculpt and Super cardio they sort of swerved a bit from their usual stuff...but it was a good move. Both workouts are good. Be careful with the leg presses in SS though, read the VF reviews about them.
Firm strength was also a departure from the original Firm formula when it first came out. I like it a lot. The sequencing and the slower pace was very welcome plus they had just a little bit of plyos as opposed to the newer vids which are nicknamed plyo hell.
I like the way they would do leg press then squats. You really feel it in the butt.
After doing Cathe, I agree that doing weights sep from cardio seems a lot better. You can concentrate on each more and lift heavier, and get more cardio in. But there are days when you just can't fit a split routine and 4-5 cardio days in. That's where circuit training and Firm vids help out a lot. Right now I chop up and mix and match a lot just to get some decent cardio in. S&H is a little tough to work into a routine if you want more cardio too!

Thanks everyone for your replies about vol 1. It's just so hard to me to order any more non-cathe videos because everytime I do I am disappointed. I will probably give Firm a try though one of these days soon.

Thanks!

I use to do the firm but after cathe I just cant see going back - the excercies are good but the whole style is soooo old - like late 1980's. ----the clothes the hair, makeup, etc... I just cant get into it any more at all - just isnt motivating - oh and no sweat of course....

If you can get past that - vol 1 is good - however I'd MUCH rather supplement my cathe tapes with my gym membership but to each their own.
