Mom's 2 B Check-in week of 9/25

Cathlete
Hi ladies! Finished my workout today, so I thought I'd post. It never ceases to amaze me what an educated & hardworking crowd Cathe draws to her. I thought it'd be fun to list our occupations this week (and yes homemaking is a DEFINITE job)!!!

I had my check-up this past week. I gained about 6 lbs last month. Not too bad. I'm about 5-lbs lighter this pregnancy than last pg at this time. This makes since, as I was 5-lb lighter going into it. I don't think I'm retaining as much water as I was last pg.

Welcome new pregos!!!!

Sun: Mindy's Cardio Options (love this DVD!!!)
Mon: off
Tue: Janis' Kicbox Circuit
Wed: off-- too busy
Thurs: off --too tired!
Fri: Turbo Jam 20 min w/o + SS Upper Body Premix
Sat: Cardio Kicks

Anyone else deal with insomnia during pg? I got hit pretty hard this week. I'm not worried about anything, so I don't know where it's coming from...although it could be hormonal.

Oops. Almost forgot my occuption. ;) I'm a pharmacist at a small rural pharmacy. I'm a new pharmacist. I got my Dr of Pharmacy degree in 2002. Love my job. :D

Hi!

Just posting quick - saw that Sandra has graduated!!! Congratulations!!! I loved the story - and am hoping everyone's experience goes that well. :) :)

We just got back @ 5:30 this morning from our beach vacation. It was beautiful.... Every time we go, I swear I could just move there permanently! We drove through the night hoping that the girls would sleep - they usually get carsick and we've had some pretty bad trips. It worked like a charm, except that they were wide awake by the time we got home and DH and I were wiped out :) Oh well! I'm hoping to get to bed early tonight.

No official workouts: I got to walk a few miles a day, plus did at least an hour in the pool or at the beach with the kids. We rented a house in a gated community this year, so I also go to use their fitness club a few times - I haven't used an elipse machine in ages - it was fantastic!! I love that thing...gotta figure out how to get one here at home... I've been hit with some later pg. nausea (m/s all over again) but am getting excited about the passing weeks.

DH is doing MUCH better with his recovery. He lost about 15-20 pounds while he was sick over the past month or so, and has a lot more energy now. He'd gained some weight since we got married, so he is pretty happy to be a little lighter. I'm just glad that he's not in pain anymore.

Other good news - I passed my first certification test (took it the day before we left for the beach). I'm enrolled in another course right now, so the studying isn't over, but to get the first one out of the way was a HUGE relief. I almost had a nervous breakdown while waiting for the computer to score the test, and actually cried when the screen said I passed. yes, my pg hormones are alive and well :)

As to occupations, I work for a consulting/actuarial company in benefits administration, mainly pension and health & welfare benefits. It's part HR consulting, part computer programming, and part management analysis. Hard to describe, but lots of fun if you like problem solving and math.

Melanie - I think pharmacy work is fascinating - and so incredibly useful for your own family medical treatments!! (My boss's DH is a pharmacist and we call him all the time for info and suggestions. He's a sweetie to put up with us.) It must be a lot of work to keep up with all the new drugs and treatments!

Gotta go - catch up with the last week's post later - too tired and headachy to read much more today.

Hope you're all having a great week!

Hi there. I introduced myself a few weeks back, but I haven't posted much since. My name is Becca and I am pregnant with my 3rd baby. I have two little boys (Noah, 8 and Abraham5) and this baby is due on April 1st. I am starting my second trimester today and am desperatly hoping that some of my energy will return and I will start to feel better soon. I am so dissapointed and disgusted with myself and how much muscle tone I have lost the past 8 weeks or so. I was training for a 10 mile race in the Twin Cities marathon and had to stop training because I had some spotting in late August. I haven't had much energy to work out and now I am seeing the consequences of that. I have gotten flabby and have increased size in my hips, thighs, arms, etc..I have gained @ 7-9 lbs so far. I am so hoping I can pick myself up and start a regular exercise routine now that I am in my second trimester. Hopefully I will be able to post my workouts with you soon.

I have a question for you all: Did any of you gain fat/lose fitness during your 1st tri and then get some of it back again (meaning get fit/toned)after you felt better? Is it just downhill from here or can I get it back while pregnant? :-(

Thanks for reading! I am so impressed by all of you and all you can do for exercise while you are pregnant. You are inspiration and motivation to me.

Oh..occupation. I am an elementary school social worker. I just finished my Masters in education and obtained my teaching license as well, but for now, I am sticking with social work.

Thanks,
Becca :)
P.S Melanie, I sent you a personal message :)

GraceNote, what was your certification test in? I must have forgotten. I'm glad DH is doing better. Slow recovery, eh? My DH got shingles in his right eye in Feb & is still recovering...so I know all about slow recoveries.
Becca, I sent you an e-mail. This is my 3rd baby too. Do you live in the Twin Cities? I live just West of St Cloud. We may be neighbors. :) I too am a jogger---I had to stop running w/last pregnancy after spotting in a 10K. I know how frustrating that can be. I was only 6 weeks at the time & the blood was brown...I think it was implantation bleeding...but better safe than sorry! I think working in an elementary school environment would be very rewarding!
Gotta go!

Hi everyone!

Melani--good job on the weight gain. And yes, I tend to suffer from insomnia while pregnant. It is not fun. The doctor told me to take 25 mg of benedryl. Sometimes this helps, but sometimes I still fell groggy when I wake up in the morning.x(

Gracenote--I'm sorry you are still struggling with nausea. I know that some women do this during pregnancy beyond the first trimester. I think that would be really hard. I'd rather be in pain then feel sick. Congrats on passing your test!!

Becca--welcome. I can relate to the fat gain during the first trimester (and beyond, blech). I have been able to keep up most of my strength, so my muscles are still lurking under there (the fat layer, that is). The thing that is really suffering for me is my cardiovascular capacity. I know that everything will come back post partum, because I have done it so many times before, but still....Hang in there and just do what you can. By a few months post partum, you will be back to your former fitness levels.

Okay, my workout week
Sunday-1hr stationary bike-steady state
Monday-1 hr stationary bike-intervals
Tuesday-Cardio and Weights (with very modified abs)
Wednesday-LIS/TBC leg premix
Thursday-rest
Friday-Low Max 1-4+ MM legs
Saturday-MM upper body+IMAX 3 step only premix

My occupation: home school mom. We start school for the year on the 3rd (we always take September off--we school year round with breaks more evenly spread out than traditional schools which take a long summer break). I will be teaching 6th grade, 3rd grade, 1st grade, and pk stuff for our 4yo, who has downs syndrome, all while keeping little 2yo Bardric happy and entertained. I will be spending roughly 6 hours per day teaching (and then there are meals, housekeeping, errands, lessons outside the home, etc) I delegate many household chores to the 3 older children and keep meals pretty simple. And I always make time to exercise even if the house is a mess. If I don't workout, I'll go insane:7

I'll probably be on the forums a lot less this year, but I'll still check in--ya'll are the only exercise buddies I have:7 :7

take care, everyone
Maggie
expecting #6, a girl
26 weeks down and 14 to go--but pray I go early, so I don't have to pay the insurance deductible twice (I'm due in early January--so everything will roll over for 2006)

Hi everyone. A halfway decent week for exercise. I find this forum very motivating because it imparts some accountability.

Sunday: Push-Pull
Monday: Walked 3 miles on treadmill
Tuesday: TBS
Wednesday: rest
Thursday: LIS/TBS circuit
Friday: rest
Saturday: High Step Challenge Timesaver #1

Becca--I can't say that I've lost any fat/gained any muscle since the first trimester, but I can tell you that I feel a LOT better about my body now. I hated how my body looked at the end of the first trimester--like an elephant leg. No one knew I was pregnant (I lacked the cute pg belly but it stuck out plenty), and I just felt lumpy and bloated and gross. I survived on bread products (and NOT the healthy whole wheat kind) and cheese of various forms for 3 months, and I barely exercised. It wasn't pretty. Now I exercise 5 days a week and feel much better. I'm certainly not cut, but people tell me I look good for over 7 months. Maybe they're just being nice, but I'll take it!

I mentioned my profession last time, but here goes again anyway. I used to practice law (criminal defense), and then I went back to school to get a PhD so I could do academic research on legal-related issues (like jury behavior, police interrogations, etc.) I have a little less than 2 years to go, and then I hope to be a professor (actually I have my first interview for a position the week after next--buying a suit to wear for that was a RIOT).

Hi everyone,
Becca, we share a common bond. I am a liscenced social worker, got my masters in it in 94. I work PT at a counseling agency. I spend the rest of the time with 2 year old Alexis.

Fatigue hit this week and by Friday I felt like a train had run over me. I also lost some sleep since Alexis had a cold and was coughing at night. By doc's calculations, I will be 6 weeks tomorrow.

Now to remember my workout week:

Sunday-stepworks+firm day 2 abs
Mon-viper + some upper work from the gautlet
Tues-sharon mann's bodysculpting-interval/hi/lo/step circuit and step interval(each seg. is 10 min) +slim in 6 abs
Wed-firm max. body shaping+supercharged sculpting
Thurs-powermax
Friday-complete aerobics and weight training + walk to the park (3 miles) I was dragging.
sat-lowmax

Hi everyone, and welcome to the new members of the checkin!

My workouts this week:

Sun: Muscle Max - the whole thing! :)
Mon: 1 mile walk, 9 miles stationary bike
Tue: 1 mile walk
Wed: Cardio and Weights
Thu: 1 mile walk, 16 miles stationary bike
Fri: Crunch Yoga Mama
Sat: Step and Weights sections of SJP

My occupation is Application Support Specialist, a.k.a. Professional Computer Nerd. Lately, said applications have been breaking down more than usual, especially at 4:50 PM on Friday afternoons. In addition, our clients have been quite demanding, so this past month I've often been forced to work late, which cuts into precious workout time.

Maggie - I've had insomnia on and off, usually caused by leg cramps or hunger pangs.

Gracenote: I've started to feel morning sickness again too! What's up with that?!? You would think we'd be done with that by now! I'm pleased to read that your DH is feeling better.

Beccat - Welcome! I'm a runner too (hence the username). I gained about four pounds during my first trimester; however, I'm pretty sure I lost fitness because I couldn't match my pre-pregnancy workouts due to constant morning sickness. :-( In my second trimester, I tried to run at least once per week, but it got much tougher because of pressure on my uterus and my hip flexors. Now, at the start of my third trimester, I'm down to walking and low-impact step on a 6 inch step. In a previous checkin, Monica11 mentioned that the pregnancy weight provides resistance, so we are not as bad off as we think fitness-wise. :)

Shopaholic - You are doing great! Keep up the good work! :)

Here was my week:

Monday: 45 quality minutes at the gym on stairmaster, elliptical, etc. I thought it was funny that when I told the front desk that I had forgotten my card, she responded, "if you feel like coming that pregnant, I'm not even going to check for your card."
Tuesday: nothing
Wednesday: w/u and step from 10-10-10, upper body/core from TBS
Thursday: walk 2.5 miles, run some stairs
Friday: walk about a mile after dinner
Saturday: nothing- stomach virus derailed my entire Saturday. All I could stomach was Coke and mac/cheese.
Sunday: walked 2.6 miles, did TBS lower body (which takes about 8 minutes)

As for a profession, I an an attorney. I do workers' compensation defense (I represent the insurance companies). I only work parttime, 3 days a week. I really actually like it because it is easy to leave on time every day and not get sidetracked.

Whomever asked about insomnia, yes, I keep waking up and cannot fall asleep. I'm not worried about anything either. Perhaps our bodies are preparing us to wake up with a baby?

You runners amaze me. I stopped at about 18 weeks. And I was a slow/clumsy runner anyway. I hope to pick it back up postpartum. There was a day (and about 20 pounds ago) when I was running 5-10 miles a day, but I am now lucky to do 4 without falling over.

And to the question about muscle tone, I found that I did pick up some muscle tone in my rear and arms just by sticking with Cathe videos. Granted, nothing that would impress any of you, but I think slight gains can be made.

have a good week.

Kristan
due 11-1 with #3, making me almost 36 weeks

Adrienne - Had an appt. today - the dr. said the morning sickness may be due to excess pressure on the stomach and digestive tract as the baby gets bigger. I think I took Zantac last time, which seemed to help a little, but forgot to ask if it's still safe. It's just plain RUDE that we have to get this twice in one pg!! Lets start a campaign against morning sickness - who can we send the petition to? :)

According to the dr, I'm measuring small - it's not that the baby's not growing, just that the rate seems to be dropping off. I have an ultrasound on Thursday to get a better measurement. The baby is doing fine - she actually got the hiccups while I was in the waiting room. (I have never experienced this before in either pregnancy, so it was kind of a new and funny sensation...of course, as it continued for the next hour and I was getting more nauseated, it wasn't as cute ;-) I just think it's amazing that there's so much going on in there!! ) The dr. said hiccups are a very good sign that the digestive system is well developed - she may have been making that up to humor me, but it sure sounds good in the event that we need to induce earlier than planned. We'll see, I guess.

Grace, Alexis measured small then ended up on track near the end. She was born a healthy 6 pounds , 11 ounces, which made for an easy delivery. Hope you will have the same.
