Modifying Cathe's strength workouts

Hello All!

Before I posted, let me tell you that I did a search on this subject and didn't find what I was exactly looking for.

I would like to modify my weights in Cathe's strength workouts because I feel I bulk easily. I would like to know from those of you who do modify your weights, how much you modify in poundage? For example in PS, if Cathe uses a 10 lb weight, do you use 8? If Cathe uses a 40 lb barbell do you use a 30 lb or even a 20 lb barbell?

I would like to reduce my upper body. I want the toned look. I do like PUB and PS and would like to continue using them but not use the weight that I have been using which is what Cathe uses. Does anyone modify these two workouts as far as weight is concerned? Also, does anyone modify endurance workouts?

TIA,

Lollie

Hi Lollie!

How you doing over there GF??? I know some say we don't bulk, but I do! I found I could match Cathe's weights in almost every workout and sometimes, even go heavier but found my muscles getting too big. Hubby even commented. I like muscles but didn't like the "BIG" look. I have found using a barbell at about 30 pounds when Cathe uses 40 works for me and still challenges me. Also, when she uses a 10# dumbbell, many times I go down to just 8#. If she uses a 20 pound bodybar for BIS, I sometimes will drop to my 18# bodybar. Sounds to me like you & I are on the exact same wavelength. I do this in both strength and endurance workouts. Not sure I have helped much since I basically said what you did. :p

RE: Hey Debbie!

I am just fine, how are you? Thanks for replying and sharing your weight modifications w/ me. This is just what I was looking for, NUMBERS!! I am curious on how low people who modify w/ their weights go. That is if they are modifying to lower weights. So, you drop the weight in endurance workouts also?

Debbie, what is BIS? Is there a workout I don't have????

RE: Hey Debbie!

I'm great! Thanks! Ooops, sorry BIS=Biceps.

I think mainly I have been dropping to the next lowest increment in dumbbells in most workouts, so if Cathe uses 12, I use 10, if she uses 10, I use 8. Does that make sense? As far as barbell, I sometimes drop 10 for LB work because my legs bulk easily, so if she uses 40, I use 30. I tend to stay the same weight as her for deadlifts as this is ONE exercise I feel I need to go heavier to feel. Does this help? (Yes, this is for my endurance work too.)

RE: Hey Debbie!

I am an intermediate excerciser going from THE Firm to Cathe. I bulk up very easily in my upper body. I try to generally keep 1/2 the weight that Cathe is using for lower body. For upper body, the heaviest I like to use is 10 lb dumbells, and try to stay one notch lower than Cathe if she is using less than 10 lbs.

RE: Hey Debbie!

IMO Cathe is much more advanced than The Firm workouts. As far as weight work, while the excercises may be similiar, Cathe uses much higher weights (40 lbs for squats vs. 16 lbs). The aerobics is also much more intense and high impact. I have been doing Cathe for a month with the following workouts so far (Pyramids up only, KPC, Step blast, SJP, rhythmic step, ME). I find that I have to modify to get through the workout so far but I am hoping that I will gradually get better.
