Modern chicks! Plz help me with my 'do!!

Thanks Michele! I think that's what I'll go for - a Carol with a skosh extra in the length. (Even if I never get another food-porn salad description :-( )

I've had the all over layers before, years ago, and now I remember why I couldn't stand them. This was long before all the fine product that's out there nowadays and the frizz was just outrageous.

I watched the curlisto video and that sounds like a good plan - styling wise. Do you go through the whole shebang of sectioning, and then applying product, and then reclipping, and then diffusing?

I think I could skip the sectioning portion and just apply product and proceed to "elevating the crown". Love it! ;)

Wow, your hair is so long!!! I think that Emmylou's do would look great on you, and, when you have time, you could do a straight version.

Can't wait to see the after photo! Are you excited?

Suzanne, I DO section my hair to apply product! I think that is THE #1 step that made the biggest difference in how my hair turns out -- nice, soft curl without frizz. It took me a long time to figure that out, but you really need to make sure that every hair on your head is coated with conditioner and/or any other styling products you use. I use a combination of Ouidad, Graham Web, and Pureology products that are made especially for curly hair.

My shortest layer is short enough that I don't need to clip the top before diffusing, but yes, I use a diffuser and I love it! I use it until my hair is just damp and then I let it air dry.

I think the Emmylou hairstyle would be beautiful on you! ;)

My hair has gotten thinner and frizzier since I've gotten older. I used to have thick, straight hair that was about down to my mid-back and then over the years I've been having it shoulder length. A few months ago I got it highlighted and cut short and choppy like the old Paige David do fro Trading Spaces. I got SO many compliments....."you look so much younger!"..."you look like you've lost 10 lbs!" My husband loves it shorter and I was so hesitant to chop it b/c I thought he'd want it longer. I was totally wrong on that one!

I can only echo what has been said before. Get yourself to a good stylist who knows how to handle curly hair (not everyone does). Then tell her (him) you wanted an updated do.

My 15 yo daughter has thick curly hair - a lot like Jesse's - but does not have the patience to style it every day (she will for special occasions). Her stylist cut it shorter and added layers (it's still past her shoulders). She showers before bed and ties it back wet for bed. When she gets up she'll spritz it with water and add a little mousse and it looks adorable.

I could definitely see you with something like that - it would frame your face beautifully. You do have a pretty face - you need something to showcase it.

Okay, here comes Miss Opinionated again: Forget the Emmy Lou!! Sure, it's gorgeous, but to get your hair that straight every day will be too high maintenance. You won't last a day. You need a stylist who will work WITH your natural curls, like Carole King's stylist. You need a 10-second routine.

Sorry bout the salad description. Since you're willing to get your hair cut, I promise to describe my next salad in excruciating detail. ;) :+ :7

ETA: I really think that Carlo King (love that name) is gonna look great on you Suzanne, even with a couple of extra inches. My hair is much shorter than that and I only get it cut 3 times per year. Is that a lot to you?

At the risk of repeating what's been said here already I have to say:

Shorter with layers and learn how to use a diffuser. It will change your life! It won't be high maintenance and you'll look marvelous!

ETA: I use Nexxus Humectress as leave in product... scrunch it through my hair, turn my head upside down and dry with a diffuser. It's easy as pie... nice curls and no frizz!

I'm with Nancy...if you have to mess with straightening and the like, you will hate it. Work those curls girl and don't be scared to lose some inches, you need to. The longer hair drags you down, you don't have to do short of course, but the C. King look would be fab on you! I am crossing my fingers you found a curly hair stylist, you need someone who understands that type of hair.Get out of that chair if you feel like your stylist isn't right, seriously, I have done it! Cannot wait to see the end result! You need to make the most of your pretty face!

Before I lost the weight I wore thick glasses and had a kind of dead squirrel attached to my head. My hair, lots of fine medium brown strands that would fuzz-up at the slightest hint of humidity, always hung in a ponytail down my back. I WAS INVISIBLE! I had been losing the weight while still wearing baggy clothes (so nobody knew) and then I was off work for awhile. When I returned I was wearing fitted clothes, contacts, and a mid-neck layered, wavy, bouncy (thanks to mousse at the roots) bob in a copper red (I'm VERY pale). Everyone went NUTS. I am STILL running into people who haven't seen me in awhile who stare at me when I say "hello, so-and-so." They know the voice, you see, then they flip-out when I Identify myself. It's hysterical. I highly recommend a TOTAL TRANSFORMATION for every woman!! The weight (which I'm still working at) and the hair were the biggest things. A while back one male co-worker said to me "You know, I always THOUGHT I preferred long hair on women... but what you've done... wow. It's soooo RIGHT on you."

Although I'm not a fan of very short hair on women of a certain age (I'll be 47 in a couple of weeks), really long hair looks so dated. Layers (bangs cover A LOT) and playing with your hair color are great mood lifters. Like Nike say JUST DO IT! :)

Thanks everyone for all your kind words, sweet compliments, excellent advice, and gentle threats (Ms NancyFancyPants!).

I don't know if my hair will curl up enough to really get the Carol look but I'll certainly give it a try.

I'll be shopping for a new hair dryer with a low/cool setting, a diffuser, a super wide legged comb and heck, why not, some new "product".

Little nervous, little excited. Wondering what SO will think.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me!

And yes Nancy I think I can swing 3 cuts a year.

I haven't chimed in before now because I don't have curly hair & didn't feel like I had much to offer but I'm in nearly the same predicament as you, Suzanne. I have long (nearly to my waist), straight hair with bangs. I've had pretty much this same style since high school. My main issue is daily maintenance & that's the main reason I've kept my hair like this for so many years. In fact, I should probably post a picture so everyone can offer advice too but for now, I just wanted to tell you that I can totally relate & I would personally choose something between Carole & Emmylou because I'd be afraid to give up all the length in my first cut & I would also want something that's easy to style on a daily basis. I also think you might be surprised at how much your hair will curl when some length is gone. Anyway, I would definitely be nervous & a little excited too but I think you are a beautiful lady & you have beautiful hair... & I think whatever you do will be lovely. So good luck & I'm looking forward to seeing the "after" photo(s) too!:)

Suzanne, great article! I think you're really in the spirit. Did you notice how the stylist structured the haircut around the facial features and complexions of the clients? In my opinion, that's the hallmark of a great stylist. When are you going?

(BTW, I'm not holding out on you. I had soup and a sandwich for dinner last night. Very boring. ;) )

Thanks for posting that article, Suzanne. I'm probably a combination of both of the first two & I know it's time to move on but I'm not sure I'm ready. I know you can relate.:) Here is a more recent photo (from Christmastime so my hair is even a little longer now) that might give you a pretty good idea of my dear old hairstyle. I am definitely going to get some highlights as I do every year but I'm not sure what I want to do with the style. I was thinking about just taking a couple of inches off the length & having some long layers cut in around my face. Pretty boring stuff, really. Any advice is welcome... but I can't promise I'll take it.;-):+

Anyway, here goes...

Kel - If you ever feel adventurous, I think you would look really cute with the "Katie Holmes" type haircut. It's kind of a layered bob that is angled slightly forward at the front. Low maintenance and "chic". Your hair is VERY much like mine was before I chopping it off.

Liann, I loved watching your transformation & I've got to admit that I had knots in my stomach before your very first cut because I thought your original hairstyle was so long & pretty. But I was sooo impressed with your new hairdo after you posted your first picture & it actually inspired me to at least think about doing something different. Then when you changed it again... wow is all I can say... it just keeps getting better! I'm not very brave so I don't think I could handle going short all at once. But I thought maybe I could do a few inches now & then ease into it. That's why I was thinking just long layers for now. But I just turned 40 & I sort of think I'd like my hair to reflect my age a little more now...
