Microwaving your protein powder...bad idea

I bought some new protein powder and added it to my oatmeal yesterday morning. I bought Jay Rob's egg white protein powder (love it BTW, great flavor, smooth, mixes well). Anyway, I added the powder then microwaved it....the protein powder actually cooked, just like eggs would. My oatmeal was a hard, gelatinous consistency! I would have laughed, but it was 5:30am! I figured out after that to add the powder after microwaving. I had it like this this morning and it was great! Just thought I'd share!

LOL- yep, you've got to cook the oats first, THEN add the protein powder! So you liked the Jay Rob's? I just saw that the other day and wondered if it was any good!

I make what I call a "whey cake". I put a scoop of protein powder, about 1/4 cup water, bit of peanut butter and some liquid stevia and microwave for 40 seconds. It comes out cakelike but with a bit of liquid that I think makes it taste like a chocolate pudding cake. My DH thinks it's gross, but I like to do it this way to feel like I'm really eating something. Don't microwave too long or else it gets harder like a dried out cake. I use the BSN lean dessert for this, I haven't tried it with any other protein powders.

How strange. I microwave my oatmeal with BSN whipped vanilla, cinnamon, and raisons every day of my life (with water, of course) and never have a problem. After I pull it out of the microwave I just stir it for a second and add milk. No problems at all.

I just came back to point out that when I microwave my protein powder/oatmeal concoction I do it for FIVE minutes on 50% power. That's probably why it always turns out great. Sometimes, I add too much water so I have to nuke it at 50% for maybe another minute.

Me too. I just started the protein powder thing so I can't remember the brand, but I put it in my oatmeal this morning & it was taaaaaaaaasty. :9

I tried this with BSN and it was terrible, but then again I find BSN to be rather clumptastic unless thrown in a blender.

Beavs, I remember from a while ago you mentioning clumpage with your BSN. That's a head scratcher since I have found it to be ever so smoothly delightful. I wonder if you have some element in your water that causes it, or perhaps you got a hexed batch. Just odd.....

Nope. I used bottled water and I have just bought my second jug of it and have had the same results. I've had much better luck with Designer Whey although I don't care for their vanilla flavor.

Wow. I hate Designer Whey for the same reason you don't like BSN. I wonder if you got a bad batch of BSN because every jar I've had the stuff is a very fine powder that blends great. I used to use Designer Whey because it had won taste contests but, the whole time, I thought 'There has to be something better because this stuff tastes like sawdust.' People here raved about BSN and the whipped vanilla was the first I tried. Didn't particularly care for the Fresh Cinnamon Bun, though.

I use BSN too. Love it!! I put it in my oatmeal everyday. Usually banana or cinnamon flavored. MMMm.. yummy. Never had any problems. and it blends great for shakes. Yeah for BSN Dessert Protein!
