Michelle Obama

I think Michelle's gown would have been improved if the shoulder strap were not as wide and didn't have the tuffs of poofy stuff on it, the poofy decals (which looked worse in close-ups, IMO) were downplayed or even omitted, and the dress were a bit more formfitting from below the breasts to just below the waist.

I do like that she didn't go with some big-name designer, chose some clothing that 'regular folks' could afford, and stuck with American designers and stores. (Kind of goes with the Obama's keeping the Bush carpeting in the Oval Office rather than commissioning a new carpet, which I guess is SOP.)

She will make some missteps - they all do.

I wouldn't call the inaugural gown a misstep but the dress she wore on the night of winning the race was horrendous!

Well, said, Carola. I couldn't agree more. This isn't the Oscar's or Fashion Week (I don't think). And who's to say how these outfits read in person, versus on TV. She's actually walking and moving - not strapped/taped into some goofy outfit. I can't imagine the pressure of being held up to this kind of ridiculous scrutiny over a DRESS. I think she looked lovely, regardless. She looks real, which is refreshing.

I loved her daytime outfit. It was pretty and sensible. I noticed that she is a little "hippy" and was happy because I am too. It is unfortunate that we scrutinize someone like her who is a regular everyday working woman who is in a good, realistic shape. On the other hand, as Americans, we are lucky to be able to do that if we want.

Gotta admire her for being willing to subject herself to public scrutiny for her husband. Her hips are too wide? She looks preggers? Her clothing choices are horrible?

I am sure glad people don't look at my clothing choices at times. I think she looks like a normal, healthy woman. She is not a supermodel for crying out loud. I wouldn't have chosen those dresses but I think she looked beautiful and very down-to-earth.

Me personally, I am more interested in her brains than her clothes or her hips. I think she is an inspiration regardless.

I have a passion for fashion, but honesty don't judge people by it. Some of the most amazing women I know are clueless about what looks best on them. In fact, the smarter the woman, the less she seems to know about the superficial stuff. (Hmmm, I guess I know what that says about me).

By the way, I don't see any posts here criticizing MO's body. Why would anyone do that?? I think she is a beautiful woman, and it's her natural beauty that inspires even thinking about what she might look best in. Unlike, say, Barbara Bush, I think she has the potential to be a real style icon. That's where Jackie Kennedy began and ended, but for MO, it's more like a footnote. I think she will be a role model and inspiration to women in many ways yet to unfold, and I'm looking forward to all of it. But, hey, I'm always up for a chat about clothes. It's fun!

Ditto! Michelle & others are trend setters, I love to dish about that.

Fashion is only one aspect of our new First Lady, unlike Jackie K. (although I do think there was much more substance to her than she gets credit for). But I think she will become a fashion icon--possibly more than a footnote--& it's gonna be so much fun to watch!

Nancy your pick in gold would have been gorgeous on Michelle. You can pick out a dress for me any day;)

Thanks, Cynthia. You are very kind. Now I'm thinking maybe a coppery metallic color might have worked.....I've got to stop this and get back to work!

I adore fashion. One of my fave things is to pour over the "dos and don'ts" for fashion in magazines (amazing how people with so much money can look so completely hideous: case in point, that green grass/hedge/bush dress Madonna wore recently that made her look like something off Sesame Street) and the pages of photos after Globes and Oscar ceremonies to see who wore what. I would adore being able to flat down the red carpet in a Narciso Rodriguez or Carolina Herrera (just not the latest one that Zellweger wore!). And I hotly deny that brains and fashion adoration (which is really the exercise of good taste, elegance, class and style) are mutually exclusive. After all Mme. Nanci and I are cases in point.......ha!

Nancy: are you going to see the Shopaholic movie for the fashion? Did you see SATC movie for the same reason?!?!?

I thought there was something not-quite-right about Michele's gown. Too much "poof" to the fabric. The same cut, but a different fabric, would have looked better, IMO.

As for Biden's wife's short dress: I say, if you've got the legs for it (and she does) and your under 60 or so (she is), then go for it. (But I'm a professor, too, so I guess I dress 'younger' as well.;))

Yea, I agree across the board. I kept looking at that white gown and thinking I'd have done it very differently. The top didn't balance out the bottom and there was too much poof all over. I hated the lemongrass Queen of England getup, which was just too old for her, also. Both outfits looked like curtains. Michele looks fab in jewel-toned body-skimming sheaths so I always vote for body skimming outfits. She was wearing another unbalanced dress today (big bottom, small top...).

As for Jill, she DOES have legs (like Michele) so that gives her carte blanche in my book. I also dug her black boots during the parade. Smokin.' I didn't get a good look at the red dress.
