Metal Coating Cracking off my dumbbells!

Cathlete
Hello -

I have the plain metal cast dumbbells. Most of mine are about only about
1.5 years old. They are just flaking off big and small chunks of the metal coating.
It gets on the floor on my hands and everywhere.

I just bought some vinyl covered ones to replace the small ones
10# and 8# pairs. I'm not sure if I'll be able to find vinyl cased larger
dumbbells. I think I've seen 12# pairs. I don't think that I've ever seen
15# or 20# pairs or vinyl covered. I wouldn't mind having my larger bells
coated in vinyl before they get as flaky as my smaller ones did. Has
anyone had this done?

Also is there anything to do with my 10# and 8# pairs other than put them
in the recycling tub? I would give them away for the shipping costs, but
that would cost more than they are worth.

Thank you in advance for your replies!

I had some old 10# and 8# dumbbells that did the same thing. I just gave them to a friend who didn't have the money to buy them.

You could donate them... or give them to a "Play it Again sports" or something similar??

I ended up buying another set just like em'. Hopefully they won't do the same thing.

Oh no! Shoot! You mean they aren't solid? I had no idea they would do that. I hope that doesn't happen to mine

Sorry it happened to yours! :-(

Play it Again (or the PTO Thrift Shop) is a good idea.

These pairs are so annoyingly flaky that I don't know
if anyone will want them for no or low cost.

I hope that the vinyl coated ones that I replaced them with
will last longer. If nothing else, they feel nicer in my hands.
I don't feel like I must wear lifting gloves with them. (Ok,
cringe and think about the wimpy lady who likes soft feeling
weights.) That alone is worth getting them to me.

I also have had trouble with flaking. Even got a metal splinter in my hand one time from it. I've never seen bigger than 12# weights with the coating, but I wish I could find 15s, 20s, and 25s.

I went about this in a different way--I went to home depot & bought a wire brush for my husbands drill & some Rustoleum spray paint. I used the brush to get off all of the metal paint (WEAR A MASK!) & then sprayed them with the spray paint. It's worked great so far--6 months later, no more flaking & they aren't rusting either.

IMHO, You won't get your money's worth from Play It Again Sports & you'll end up spending more on new weights.

That's my suggestion anyway.
